Swans Island House Rental Photos and Description

Main House 3BR/2Baths, sleeps 6/ Bunkhouse, sleeps 2/ Barn Sleeps 2

Modern, 3BR/2B house, immaculately clean, charming and comfortable (1100 SF, sleeps 6): the Barn (1200 SF, meal seating for 10, sleeps 2 on the sofa bed), and Bunk House, colorful and charming (100 SF, 2 twin beds, sleeps 2) and garage (3 bikes, tire pump, helmets and 20 pound lobster pot with propane burner, and garbage cans, gardening equipment and hose), on elevated 3 acres, rocky, wooded, blue berried property with wonderful views of Burnt Coat Harbor.

The Main House and the Barn are WiFi/'High Speed Internet and Satellite TV equipped. Fine old stereo speakers stream music from the internet and pick up AM and FM over the air broadcasts. A modern, high capacity Washer/Dryer is located in the well stocked pantry. All needed pillows, linens and towels are supplied. The refrigerator was new in 2013. The electric stove is modern and works well. There is thermostat controlled electric baseboard heating for chilly nights. There is a 'medium sized' microwave in the kitchen. Sorry, no electric dishwasher yet.

A short ferry ride to MDI and Acadia National Park. An easy walk (less than 1/2 mile) to Tim's Island Market and Supply (excellent meat, fish and lobster), ice creamery, fast food truck, Carrying Place sand beach, the Post Office and Town Hall. The 'Odd Fellows Hall', the town's meeting place for town breakfasts, Zumba classes, and plays, musicals and the Sweet Chariot Folk Festival, is next door. Longer walk or short drive to the island's Tea House Restaurant, library, fisherman's wharf/lobster co-op, and swimming quarry. Easy access to biking and hiking trails and nature reserve. Short drive to the ferry (about 5 minutes).

An inexpensive ferry ticket will take you from Swans Island to Bass Harbor in about 30 minutes. Bring your car if you want, but you can get around MDI without it. In Bass Harbor, steps from the ferry, you board the free LL Bean MDI bus, and tour Acadia National Park, visit and shop Southwest Harbor, Northeast Harbor, Somesville, Bar Harbor, or Jordan Pond; or walk Acadia's Carriage Roads or hike Acadia's trails; go to the top of Cadillac Mountain (from which you can see Swans Island); or swim and Picnic at Echo Lake. Plan your excursion carefully and the bus will get you back in time for the late afternoon ferry. The bus is free; you can bring our bikes if you are in good shape and can manage the hilly roads on MDI. We supply information about the bus, the ferry (schedules and routes) with our 'Welcome and Information' packet which we mail to you after you have completed your reservation.

Wonderful summer stock theater is available in Somesville. Classical music concerts take place in Northeast Harbor. There are wonderful museums, galleries, shops, and restaurants all over MDI and nearby towns in Hancock County. All within easy reach. We can advise about scheduling and logistics.

Charter a motor launch or sail boat. Go whale watching. Explore nearby uninhabited islands. Go clamming on deserted beaches. We hope to offer a sail boat and motor boat with the property rental, soon. In the meantime local lobstermen sometimes offer rides on their lobster boats with trips to nearby Stonington, and mail boat rides to Frenchboro, on which you might see some seals, some eagles, other sea birds and rarely a whale.

All the house water is from our well, tastes wonderful, is filtered and treated with UV light to kill any germs that might be in the well. State licensed lab tests done in June 2013 assured the potability of the well water, without filtration and UV treatment. Mattresses are modern, firm, and very comfortable.

About William Edelheit

We are a family of 4. We live in suburban New Jersey. I commute to work in New York City at a large Japanese bank where I am a Senior Vice President and Department Head. My husband is retired physician, having been in private practice for many years in Manhattan and on the teaching faculty of the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. My son, age 24, living in Spuyten Duyvil, is working at the NYU Dental School administering research grants and finishing his degree at Hunter College. My 14 year old daughter, Amity, an 8th grader, loves the piano, the dance, her camera, her iPhone, her dog Juno and her numerous friends and buddies.

William Edelheit purchased this house in 2013

Why William Edelheit chose Downeast and Acadia

We have been coming to Maine for the past 25 years. We started in Monhegan and then rented for a week or two for many successive summers, first in Bar Harbor, then Southwest Harbor, then Bass Harbor. We always thought we would buy on MDI.

We love the Acadia, Echo Lake, Long Pond, the theatre in Somesville, the music in Northwast Harbor and the boating and galleries and restaurants. We have looked every year for a place to buy but never found the 'just right' one, until we came out to Swans Island at the end of January 2012. We were stunned and speechless and driven to tears by the beauty of one property that we saw after another: by the beauty of the island, by the happy faces, laughter and smiles of the people coming to Swans on the ferry; and the sadness of the faces of the people leaving. his had never happened to us before, even as we looked up and down the coast over many, many years. We were compelled to buy this house, (and want so much to share it when we can't be there), by the character of this house and this place and its people, and by its proximity to Acadia and all that we love on MDI.

What makes this house unique

Over the years Acadia and MDI has gotten busier, more crowded and more expensive, though no less beautiful and no less fun. We have migrated away from the business and bother and noise and crowds and commercialism as we moved over the years from Bar Harbor to SW Harbor to Bass Harbor. Moving to Swans was the last step in that migration. It is quiet and small and intimate and friendly and gorgeous and safe. And still we can easily go and do all the things we have done for so many years on MDI and in Acadia.

Quality Family Time

  • 5 of 5

The property is clean and well maintained. The house is bright and cheerful, bedrooms cozy and the layout makes it feel bigger than it looks. The master bedroom with its own bath and shower feels very separate from the rest of the house. There is a lovely screened in porch that we sat in just before bedtime each night. The sleeping barn is absolutely adorable and was immediately snatched up by my son: "This one's MINE, this place is DOPE!"

But the real crown jewel of this house is the barn. We pretty much spent all of our time in the barn. It is gigantic, with huge doors that swing wide open and keep the view always present. We ate all of our meals at the big table in the barn, painted and put puzzles together on the big craft table in the back, played music on the stereo, lounged on the sofa, considered turning on the big flat screen tv to watch a movie and eat popcorn if it rained, but we had fine weather and never did turn it on. We loved the idea that we could though. We used the wifi to find lyrics to songs we sang and played and were thrilled to find a piano in the barn to add to the "band". I can't say enough about how delightful the barn is. We did some serious family quality time there.

The garage was handy for the 3 bikes that I brought (along with the 3 bikes already in the garage, the place looked like a bike shop!). I was relieved to find a floor pump, as I had forgotten mine.

The house is just next door to Odd Fellows Hall where there were exercise classes MWF mornings. Sometimes there are events there like pancake breakfasts, chili cook off or a concert, but the week we were there did not have anything scheduled beyond the exercise classes. It is a short walk to the Island Market which is fantastic. The kids liked walking over to get their harbor bars and make special orders of sticky buns. We also loved the lobster steamer set up in the back yard. We went to Trafton's warf and got lobsters to steam in the back yard. Hilarious field trip (we had to pull our own traps at the dock) and delicious dinner. We brought our canoe and launched trips around the island from the canoe carry, which is also a short walk from the house.

I've been visiting the island for the last 15 years and have stayed at several houses. When you add up all the conveniences and unique attributes of this house it really is at the top of my list of places to stay on Swan's Island. Thank you for letting us stay at your lovely house.

A lovely house, on a lovely island.

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of five, and enjoyed a fantastic week at this house. The house itself was very nice, with a well stocked kitchen and a very comfortable lounge area and screened porch. The kids enjoyed the barn, and a good wifi connection. We made use of the bbq and, on the rare occasion that the weather let us down, the board games in the house.

We enjoyed exploring the island on the bikes provided, which brings me on to the owners. Bill was incredibly helpful before we arrived, e-mailing all kinds of information and advice, from what to do in Acadia National Park, to where to rent extra bikes and how to manage ferry crossings. This made everything so much easier, and allowed us to settle into life on the island immediately.

I notice that other reviewers have touched upon their stress about catching the ferry. We avoided this by leaving the car at home, once we were on the island. It was a 10-15 min cycle ride to the ferry terminal, and crossing as a foot passenger with a bike took all of the worry out of wondering if your car would make the next sailing. Anyway, both times we used the ferry with a car, we got straight on. All in all a fantastic place for a holiday, and we will be back as soon as we are able! Andrew, Anita and family.

Open the Doors and Let the Sea Breeze In

  • 5 of 5

I'm almost afraid to write this for fear that interest in the place will increase and I'll be unable to go there again, but I know I can't be like that so... this is a very nice place!

Putting the beautiful island aside, I'm not a good enough writer to describe it all, Bill and Victoria's property has everything that you would desire for a perfect vacation. The place was very clean with an extremely well stocked pantry. The property is very nicely decorated and furnished. We found it to be very comfortable and welcoming.

The only problem we encountered was that there was so much to do on the island we were not be able to take advantage of all that Bill and Victoria's place has to offer. There are games, bicycles, a small but very nice and diverse library, hammock, screened in porch, and two TVs, wifi and a party barn that I could live in if it had running water. I can't tell you if the big screen TV in the barn works because during our week there we never even thought about turning it on.

They say that one of the keys of a good vacation is the ability to get away from one another once in a while. Bill and Victoria's place gives you that. My children are all independant young adults and we had a conflict free vacation because we were all able to find our own space when needed. But at the end of each day we would all gather together in the barn, open the doors, let the sea breeze in and enjoy it all . Total contentment .

We found Bill and Victoria to be very easy to deal with and it's my opinion that they truly want you to enjoy their place. I know my entire family did. We had a great time! Thank you.

Owner's Response: Dave, hi - Thanks so much for the kind words. It gives our entire family great pleasure to know that the work and money we put into "81" results in so much pleasure for all our guests. Of course we love Swan's Island and the house, wish we could be there all the time, but unable to do that, sharing the joy is a wonderful experience. We will be delighted to have you back again. BEST time of year to go!!

  • 5 of 5

WHAT a beautiful house and perfect location to everything that Swans Island has to offer!! We had a group that really wanted to utilize every amenity that this rental had to offer (the bunk house, the barn, etc) and we were wondering if it would be too cold during this time of year. Well, we were so pleasantly surprised how warm and wonderful it was!

Come to find out, the island is actually warmer than the "Maine-land" this time of year, since the island is surrounded by the warmer waters! We never even used the heat ONCE, and our stay went into the first week of October! Then, there is the beautiful colors of the leaves changing, most of the tourists had gone, and yet there was plenty to do and explore on the island.

We were also taken aback by how friendly everyone on the island is. You literally cannot drive past another car without being waved to, (and you learn quickly to wave back!!). So friendly in fact, that we were cordially invited to a party around the corner from our house, at the Odd Fellows Hall, for a few of the islanders that had recently retired from the ferry system. We were welcome with open arms, and we even brought food to share and helped out cleaning up and doing dishes afterwards. We were treated as local residents. Amazing!! It was like being in a time warp. Everyone is so so nice!!

This house is walking distance from the islands only store (they even have fresh seafood, made to order next to the store!! This beautiful house is perfectly located. Close to the Ferry terminal, close to the store, close to the lighthouse, etc., etc. The house was immaculate, and provided everything needed for a beautiful and relaxing stay.

We LOVED having dinner in the barn each night with the doors open to enjoy the view, which includes part of the ocean!!

Bill and Victoria were wonderful to work with, and they were very diligent in making sure our stay was trouble free and comfortable. We were even surprised to find a room with bunk beds, that hadn't been shown on the website! Loved our lobster dinner, and a lobster pot was even provided with large lobster plates!

Can't wait to come and stay here again, maybe in the spring!!

Thanks again Bill & Victoria!!

Down East and Away - Maine at its Best

  • 5 of 5

Bill & Victoria - So, I wanted to take a moment and relay that we all had a tremendous time at your place and Swan’s Island in particular. We thought your place was so comfortable and cozy.

The bikes and beanbag toss were nice perks. Carol, the property manager was helpful and kept us informed as to what’s what on the island. My high school twins were of course very appreciative of the cottage having wireless, and I admit that my wife and I took advantage of the internet access too. We found the location and "vibe" of the cottage to be relaxing and carefree. All amenities were in good condition and easy to use. The only limitation seemed to be the kitchen sink being too small for cleaning the plates and cooking pots/pans. The dishes were our biggest, most time consuming chore. We liked the idea of the separate shed bedroom, but truthfully, the isolation and disconnection was not appealing - so no one used the space.

We managed to play many games of Mexican Train dominos, took a bike ride, did numerous hikes to Hockamock Head and surrounds, a trip to Fine Sand Beach, the Carrying Place, and numerous back roads. We made two trips to MDI, once as walk-on and hop onto free shuttle over to Bar Harbor & SW Harbor for ambling about; unfortunately, we didn't grasp how long it took to go from Point A to B plus juggling ferry schedule required high level of time management. The second trip we took our car and did a kayak trip on Long Pond, lunch at The Colonel’s in NE Harbor, hike to Beech Mtn & Cliffs, and grocery shopping at Sawyer’s in SW Harbor. I personally enjoyed the ferry trips and the environs around the terminal in Bass Harbor. It would be useful for a Swan's Island resident to craft some advice for use of the ferry, planning & protocols, etc. There is a real process involved and it took a bit of talking, wangling, patience, and waiting to reduce the stress of potentially not getting on ferry or missing last chance to get back, etc.

I have a fantasy of spending time on an ocean sailing vessel and was inspired by the many sloops, schooners, and motor sailers cruising through or moored close at hand for oggling. All in all, an excellent adventure, so thanks for making it possible by having such a fine cottage to share in a highly unique, beautiful, authentic American place.

Owner's Response: Andy B provided a very positive review and gave us 5 stars. However, he made three observations that require explanation and comment: (1) Andy stated that he found the sink too small. The sink is a "double sink". Each sink, by my memory, is approximately 14x12x7. I am not now at the house and will later provide exact measurements and a photo on the website. All our dishes and all our pots, with the exception of the 30" high lobster pot , fit in the sink and under the faucet. My family have managed to do all our dishes, pots and pans without difficulty. No other guests have complained. (2) Andy describes the "Bunk House" as "isolated and disconnected" and therefor "not used". The Bunk House literally is two steps from the kitchen door. Its side wall is inches from the house. The website photos are absolutely accurate. It is cool and cross ventilated at night. The beds and linens are high end and super comfortable. I, my teen daughter and her friends have used the Bunk House many times without finding it "remote and disconnected". Several guests with children have used the Bunk House in preference to the Main House bedrooms. Teens in particular like the separation and privacy of this special, charming and art filled space. Our only 6 person guest party were delighted to use the Bunk House when they had unexpected guests sleep over. (3) Andy complains of "ferry issues/ferry stress" and wishes someone would have informed/helped him about this. I did email Andy on 30 June, well in advance of his 12 August arrival, (as I email each guest) with detailed information about the ferry operation and strategies for dealing with it to reduce inconvenience and anxiety. I am sorry he did not read or did not remember that email. 81 Harbor Road is on an island. There are 6 arriving and 6 departing ferries on 90 minute intervals every day. Islands are unique and special places, offering pleasures not found on the mainland. You do have to plan and accommodate your arrivals and departures to the scheduled ferry. It has not been difficult for us. Only one other guest has ever mentioned it, and she was kind enough to say that she got used to it. Overall I think the review illustrates how even a most critical, demanding and difficult to please guest, has to admit that the house, Swan's Island and MDI were a wonderful place for their holiday and a great value. I have not asked Andy to review my comments or remove or change his comments.

A charming, beautifully maintained cottage.

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay on Swan's Island. The location of the cottage is perfect - it is on one of the main roads that lead from the ferry and next door to the town hall, where we participated in the town's square dance and had a great, fun evening. We made many trips to the Lobster Coop, which is not too far down the road and sells lobster - so delicious, fresh and reasonably priced.

The cottage is very comfortable as well as very nicely decorated. There is a very sweet little room (all wooden) that is detached from the house and sleeps two. Our two daughters slept there and loved it. The kitchen is very well stocked- there is a giant lobster pot and lobster accessories as well as an outdoor charcoal grill - both of which we made very good use of.

We had fun exploring the Island and came across some hidden gems. Must sees are the Saturn Press which makes the most beautiful artisan greeting cards, all done on vintage letterpresses. They have a gift shop and the owners will gladly give you a tour. The White Sand beach is well worth a walk through the forest to get there but you will be rewarded with many sand dollars if you get there on a low tide.

Overall we had a super relaxing, very nice time staying at the house and exploring the island. We'd love to go back for another visit!

Owner's Response: Natasha - Hi. Thanks so much for the wonderful review. It will really help people know they can have a really good time on Swans and it will make them happy and comfortable to rent our house. So it really helps us. If you could, I would ask you to make one tiny, tiny correction. You refer to the "town Hall" next to the house. There is a town hall about a 1/2 mile down the road. . the building next to our house is actually called "The Odd Fellows Hall" It functions like some town halls in that there are town meetings there, concerts and plays and 3 times each week morning Zumba classes. this correction is a little thing and if you dont do it, if it is too mucn bother, it is ok. Overall the review is terrific and well written. Victoria and I really thank you. Bill Edelheit Bill edelheit
