Nice place but definitely off the beaten path. Beautiful home and great views, but be vary cautious if you are a flat lander. This cabin is at 10,665 ft. My wife may dog and myself all got altitude sickness. We were so bad that we left after 3 days and had to go down to Denver. I wish this was stated in the info. We go to this area about once or twice a year staying between 9,000 and 10,000. That extra 600 made a big difference.
The other issue we had was with the management company. It was stated on the contract that " We are not responsible for issues with your vehicle or the snow but only for making sure the snowplower plows the driveway( this may not be immediate but he will come)" This did not happen. When we arrived there was 5-6 inches on the sloping drive with a large snowdrift in front of the only open garage space and covering the walkway to the front door. We called but no one came. What we found out was the contract ran out with the person doing the plowing and the management company did not want to deal with it.
Our family recently stayed at "The Claim" in Fairplay, Colorado for the first time. This was our family vacation and it was wonderful, and the first time our sons had been to Colorado! The cabin was beautiful! The weather was perfect and refreshingly cool. We came from triple digit weather to wonderfully cool weather and got to spend a week in the most beautiful surroundings. We can't wait to go back. We were able to drive a short distance several times during our stay and visit surrounding attractions while all the while looking forward to returning to a beautiful cabin. We didn't see Matilda the moose that we had heard so much about but hopefully on our next visit we will get to see her. We can't wait to go back.
Our family stayed at "The Claim" for the first time this summer and were very pleased! The cabin was spectacular and secluded with great views of the surrounding forest. Inside the cabin offered everything from a fully stocked kitchen, beautiful decor, and even a dog bed for our dog. Outside there was an expansive wrap around porch with log benches by the fire pit and hot tub. Susan, the property manager, was very helpful and made our stay even better. She was able to offer great advice for activities in the surrounding area and ATV trails. At one point we did need more towels for the number of guests and Susan was very quick to bring more by. We will definitely be visiting again next summer. Thank you for the amazing vacation!
We arrived at this very nice spacious well furnished cabin at a good location and spent the first 2 hours cleaning! The dishes were in the cabinet dirty and there was dust and cobwebs and dog hair everywhere. We had to clean spots in the kitchen to place our things and clean the dishes we planned to use. If this were not enough there was no wood for the fireplace/ nothing to start a fire with (matches/lighter) and no gas for the grill. When we were finally able to reach the property manager she suggested we drive to her office in Alma and pick up a tank. Also the water heater was not large enough to fill the tub with warm water and the water coming from the facet was orange for the first day or two (it would have been nice for Susan to address this when we inquired - to any renters- this goes away when the pipes are flushed through. Needless to say with a good cleaning crew and better communication with Susan this property would be a 4 star. The owners should rethink the property mgr.
My wife and I had the pleasure of sharing "the Claim" with two other couples for an extended weekend ski trip. We couldn't have been more pleased with the accomodations. Nothing beats a hot steam shower or hot tub soak whether you have spent the day exploring/skiing the mountain, or just relaxing all day. Not to mention the hut tub overlooks a lovely creek where wildlife frequents, we were lucky enough to see the baby moose during our stay.
We recently visited "The Claim" and had an amazing time. I have been to Colorado many times but always stayed at a resort so this was a new experience for us. It certainly exceeded all of the expectations we had prior to arriving. Its close enough to the ski slopes but also far enough away that you have the feel you are right in the middle of the wilderness. We actually saw a moose up close one day which was really cool.
Overall a wonderful vacation and I highly recommend "the Claim" for anyone looking to get away to Colorado.
