Too high for us flatlanders

  • 4 of 5

To high for comfort

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Nice place but definitely off the beaten path. Beautiful home and great views, but be vary cautious if you are a flat lander. This cabin is at 10,665 ft. My wife may dog and myself all got altitude sickness. We were so bad that we left after 3 days and had to go down to Denver. I wish this was stated in the info. We go to this area about once or twice a year staying between 9,000 and 10,000. That extra 600 made a big difference.

The other issue we had was with the management company. It was stated on the contract that " We are not responsible for issues with your vehicle or the snow but only for making sure the snowplower plows the driveway( this may not be immediate but he will come)" This did not happen. When we arrived there was 5-6 inches on the sloping drive with a large snowdrift in front of the only open garage space and covering the walkway to the front door. We called but no one came. What we found out was the contract ran out with the person doing the plowing and the management company did not want to deal with it.

Owner's Response: We are very sorry that the snow was a problem for these renters. We have it in no less than 3 places that you have to have 4-wheel drive or chains. A lot of people assume that they can get by in the spring without them but we cannot guarantee that there will not be a spring storm with a lot of snow. In this case, we sent the plower out to check the home and he could not plow because there was less than 4 inches on the deiveway. If he had plowed, he would habe torn up the driveway which is why we tell everyone in 3 different documents that you need 4-wheel drive or chains. If you have either of these the driveway and roads are very manageable. My jeep was able to maneuver just fine when I went by to check. I cannot do anything about the altitude but we have very few problems when people drink a lot of water and don't drink alcohol the first couple of nights. That seems to help a lot. It can be stressful though on elderly and people who are out of shape. One suggestion would be to drive up and acclimate slowly and maybe even spend one night in Denver to get used to the altitude over a couple of days.

Great Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

Our family recently stayed at "The Claim" in Fairplay, Colorado for the first time. This was our family vacation and it was wonderful, and the first time our sons had been to Colorado! The cabin was beautiful! The weather was perfect and refreshingly cool. We came from triple digit weather to wonderfully cool weather and got to spend a week in the most beautiful surroundings. We can't wait to go back. We were able to drive a short distance several times during our stay and visit surrounding attractions while all the while looking forward to returning to a beautiful cabin. We didn't see Matilda the moose that we had heard so much about but hopefully on our next visit we will get to see her. We can't wait to go back.

Best Vacation Ever!!

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed at "The Claim" for the first time this summer and were very pleased! The cabin was spectacular and secluded with great views of the surrounding forest. Inside the cabin offered everything from a fully stocked kitchen, beautiful decor, and even a dog bed for our dog. Outside there was an expansive wrap around porch with log benches by the fire pit and hot tub. Susan, the property manager, was very helpful and made our stay even better. She was able to offer great advice for activities in the surrounding area and ATV trails. At one point we did need more towels for the number of guests and Susan was very quick to bring more by. We will definitely be visiting again next summer. Thank you for the amazing vacation!

Dirty dirty dirty

  • 2 of 5

We arrived at this very nice spacious well furnished cabin at a good location and spent the first 2 hours cleaning! The dishes were in the cabinet dirty and there was dust and cobwebs and dog hair everywhere. We had to clean spots in the kitchen to place our things and clean the dishes we planned to use. If this were not enough there was no wood for the fireplace/ nothing to start a fire with (matches/lighter) and no gas for the grill. When we were finally able to reach the property manager she suggested we drive to her office in Alma and pick up a tank. Also the water heater was not large enough to fill the tub with warm water and the water coming from the facet was orange for the first day or two (it would have been nice for Susan to address this when we inquired - to any renters- this goes away when the pipes are flushed through. Needless to say with a good cleaning crew and better communication with Susan this property would be a 4 star. The owners should rethink the property mgr.

Owner's Response: Unfortunately some people respond negatively when they realize they are wrong. These people had a large group and insisted on taking showers at the same time and then claimed they had no hot water. We sent out the plumber who found absolutely nothing wrong except over use of hot water at the same time. Sometimes the jets in the jetted tub do not get used often enough and they can emit a little hard water with iron in it that is not harmful but is not a reflection of the cleaning. We did not find a lot of cobwebs upon inspection after their rental with the exception of one on a high chandelier. We got the maid a long pole to be able to reach all of the cob webs so that should never ben an issue again. As for the propane, we have no way of knowing when it will run out so we keep plenty of extra canisters on the deck at our office that can be picked up at any time with no charge. How sad that people would say such ugly things about a gorgeous home just because they wanted 10 people to take showers at the same time. We listen to all input and respond instantly with mechanics or solutions but some people are just never happy.

Cozy mountain getaway.

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I had the pleasure of sharing "the Claim" with two other couples for an extended weekend ski trip. We couldn't have been more pleased with the accomodations. Nothing beats a hot steam shower or hot tub soak whether you have spent the day exploring/skiing the mountain, or just relaxing all day. Not to mention the hut tub overlooks a lovely creek where wildlife frequents, we were lucky enough to see the baby moose during our stay.

Perfect vacation spot!

  • 5 of 5

We recently visited "The Claim" and had an amazing time. I have been to Colorado many times but always stayed at a resort so this was a new experience for us. It certainly exceeded all of the expectations we had prior to arriving. Its close enough to the ski slopes but also far enough away that you have the feel you are right in the middle of the wilderness. We actually saw a moose up close one day which was really cool.

Overall a wonderful vacation and I highly recommend "the Claim" for anyone looking to get away to Colorado.
