The Cracker Shack was totally gutted and now is an open plan with a queen bed built into an alcove like a ships bunk, a walk in closet with washer and dryer, a well equipped kitchen with a snack bar, a dining area, living area with windows all around for lots of light. There is a front porch and a back deck with old wrought iron tables and chairs overlooking a patio with gas grill and lawn with Holiday Park beyond. Very "Old Florida". Today you may hear the tennis rackets whacking balls at the Jimmy Evert tennis Center or a concert in the Park on Friday Summer nights, not the lions roar the former owner remembered when it was a lion farm and Clyde Beatty Zoo.. When you are in this house you feel like you are in the country, but it is in the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale. Two new beach cruisers and available for guest use. Smart TV with cable, wi-fi, Panasonic sounds system with Bluetooth. Experience living in a tiny house, you may find its all you need!
Six children grew up in this cottage when their father brought them to Fort Lauderdale before 1910 from Ohio after their mother died. I bought it from the wife of one of those children, and have recently gutted and renovated the cottage adding such modern features as air conditioning, Oak floors, an indoor bathroom, a great kitchen, a washer and dryer, and interior details that may have been original had the area and the former owners not been so Florida Cracker poor.
A Fort Lauderdale native, I am a Realtor specializing in residential sales in eastern Broward County for close to years. I have another vacation rental home in Southern Pines NC that I have rented for years with many positive reviews.
I live a few blocks from the Cracker Shack in a 1937 cottage that is also my real estate office.
Rob Rose purchased this cottage in 1995
For me, the best real estate buys are those that find you. Sort of like pets. I learned of this house being sold and bought it at first site. My mother asked, 'Does it have high ceilings? Pretty wood floors? A fireplace?' It had none of that. She never understood its appeal to me, but people who have seen it over the years never fail to love it. If a proper bedroom, high ceilings and more space is a priority for you, this would not be appealing. If you are drawn to charming small cottages and privacy, this is the place!
Unique is an understatement. Why stay at a hotel or guesthouse, or a home that is larger and more expensive, when you can enjoy the charm, comfort, convenience and affordability of this cottage? Walk through the back garden and through the gate and you are in Holiday Park where there is a par course, clay and had-tru tennis courts lit for night play. Enjoy the hammock hanging between two palms in the garden, cook out on the gas grill and have meals at the tables on the deck and patio with umbrellas. Out the front gate and a block south is Winn Dixie grocery, and a few more blocks is Fresh Market. Take the bikes for a ride through Victoria Park, down Las Olas, and along Riverwalk, or to the beach. Check out events at War Memorial Auditorium usually each weekend, and Parker Playhouse, both a 5 minute walk. Explore new restaurants along US 1, such as Mellow Mushroom. Walk over to Top Hat Deli, or the uber hip Rhythm and Vine for a cocktail served at the Airstream bar, and have dinner from a food truck that changes nightly, or go to enjoy music inside.
Beautiful little house, with everything you need perfectly arranged. You can go out the back gate and take a morning run through the park, and markets are all within walking distance, there is a Fresh Market a few blocks away that is top notch. The beach is five minutes or less by car and its very easy to get to and from Ft Lauderdale airport. The neighborhood is very nice

My husband and I recently spent January and February at the cottage with our two Whippets and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The cottage is located in Victoria Park, a beautiful upscale residential neighborhood within steps from the Parker Playhouse and War Memorial Auditorium. As well, there is a grassy field behind the cottage property that is frequently used on weekends for local events at these two venues, however, the tranquility of the location was not at all affected by these events. It was always quiet and peaceful, wonderful for walking two energetic dogs. The cottage itself is very small with a true beach feeling, but nicely equipped with Cuisenart cookware and Mikasa dishes. There was also ample glassware and cutlery. I believe the cottage was recently painted with new bathroom fixtures and for those interested a jetted tub. The grounds are probably what sold us on the residence which has a very nice size fenced in back yard, which was perfect for the dogs to run off leash. Very tropical lush foliage all around the property with tons of seating as well as a very nice gas grill. Overall the cottage was nicely decorated, although not fancy it was very charming. The grounds and neighborhood are lovely, but because of the size it may not be for everyone. The owner was very attentive and helpful and whenever we had a question or needed anything (which was not often) he responded very quickly. Would definitely recommend this property!
I finally escaped the frigid winter weather and was lucky enough to come across this property. It was charming, comfortable and so close to everything. Rob is a wonderful Host and it was so evident that he takes great care of the cottage. The Cracker Shack is wonderful !!!
We have utilized HomeAway for other properties and had been very happy with out choices. This cottage did not let us down. Perfect for two or three people. We were centrally located to all that's happening in Ft. Lauderdale and near all major highways. The beach was only a few miles away. Grocery stores and restaurants were in walking distance. There was nothing that we were in need of in regards to cooking, laundry, Wi-Fi, etc. The backyard was large and beautiful.
I would strongly recommend this property and hopefully, we may be able to stay there again. Couldn't have been happier.
I would strongly recommend this property to anyone.
If you are looking for an alternative to Fort Lauderdale's typical beachfront housing, I would highly recommend the Cracker Shack. Owner Rob (a local REALTOR) has done an amazing job of combining modern amenities with the charm of early Fort Lauderdale. Grocery stores (Winn Dixie and Fresh Market) and restaurants (I highly recommend The Whole Enchilada) are within walking distance of the cottage, which abuts Victoria Park. Note: The greenspace directly behind the property isn't necessarily a park, but is sometimes used for event parking for park events. The weekend I stayed at the Shack, there was a gun and ammunition show (hey, it's Florida!), so the greenspace was used for parking. But this is just an FYI. It was not a problem.
Wonderful kitchen, breakfast bar, and dining area. If your party consists of more than two people (who don't mind "shacking" up), then this isn't the property for you as there's only one (very comfortable) bed. Bathroom is nice, with adequate water pressure. I didn't use the jetted tub, but it's there. Wicker furniture is charming, but not terribly comfortable for long-term sitting. The smart tv was a nice feature, as was the writing desk. A washer and dryer...wow!
Breakfast on the back patio was a great way to start each day, as were cocktails in the evening. The backyard also features a 1960s Airstream trailer, which Rob the owner is restoring. He's quite the Airstream fan, given the accessories in the Shack.
I took advantage of one of the beach cruiser bikes and made a day of riding down to the beach. The traffic is insane, and most roads feature bike lanes.
Bottom line, stay at the Cracker Shack. Enjoy the beach from a distance. Experience a Fort Lauderdale neighborhood (eccentric neighbors and all) that you won't find at one of the many beachside highrise hotels. Walk to the park, or to the store. Walk to Las Olas and dine along the waterway. Wake to the sun from your ship's berth bed. Plan your day at the writing desk. Or just sit in an Adirondack chair on the front porch and say hello to a neighbor. You won't regret it.
The Cracker Shack is located on Holiday Park, a 640 acre park in Fort Lauderdale with a par course, clay and har tru tennis courts at the Jimmy Evert Tennis Center, basketball courts, the War Memorial Auditorium and Parker Playhouse. Winn Dixie grocery store is 1/2 block away and a Fresh Market 3 blocks away. Victoria Park is a charming and historic neighborhood located beside the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale that is great for walking and bike riding. Las Olas Boulevard shops bars and restaurants are an easy walk or bike ride away, as is the Riverwalk along the New River where you can take a water taxi to tour the waterways of 'The Venice of America' or even take it to the beach and back!
