About the property

The Z's Retreat is your 'home away from home' near Yosemite in Historic Mariposa

The Z's Retreat is our chance to share our wonderful historic town of Mariposa and our majestic 'backyard' which is Yosemite National Park. We were fortunate enough to find a house in town and began our project. We are very excited about sharing our quaint historic town with travelers! And of course our beautiful 'backyard'! Our home is fully furnished with a Queen bed in each bedroom. The bathroom features a tub/shower combo and a pedestal sink. The living room has comfy couches and a electric fireplace to give it that cozy feeling. The kitchen is complete with a stove/oven, refrigerator, dishwasher, coffee maker, blender, toaster, pots/pans, dishes/utensils, some spices and paper products. We provide a stack washer/dryer. There is a covered carport and ample parking. The backyard is fenced and we are animal long as your animal is friendly! The best part is a huge back deck to BBQ & picnic on in the evenings or enjoy your morning coffee on! The neighborhood is very quiet, so this is not the place for loud! It is the perfect place to come 'home' to after a day in Yosemite. But, please take the time to enjoy our town! The Visitors Center is is located at 5158 Hwy. 140. You can go to the website for info on local events as well as planning a trip to Yosemite.

There are plenty of restaurants to choose from within walking distance of the house. The courthouse is just a few blocks away as is the Museum, Post Office, and the Yarts bus stop to take you to Yosemite. Pioneer Market is also close by and you can find almost anything there!

About Cindy and John Zurilgen

We grew up in the central valley in the small farming community of Chowchilla, Ca. We were married in Aug. of 1982 and started our family in 1987. We now have 3 wonderful adult children. We decided to relocate to the mountains in 1999. We found Mariposa by chance and fell in love with the area and decided to raise our kids here. Two of our kids are off on their own adventures after graduating college and we have added two other wonderful people to our family. Our third child is attending college and is in her 2nd year. We are very excited to provide a place for families to visit our wonderful historic little town as well as the vast beauty that is Yosemite National Park. Our photo is a rare shot on Christmas Day at Glacier Point when there was no snow! Dec.25, 2011. Our son Alec with Rebekah, Our daughter Ashlynn, Our daughter Aubriana with her husband James, and us, Cindy & John.

Why Cindy and John Zurilgen chose Yosemite Area

To own a house in town was a rare opportunity to make our dreams of having a vacation rental come true. This house is located in the heart of Historic Mariposa with all its history and culture. A quiet neighborhood is a perfect retreat after being in Yosemite all day. Walk around town or just relax and enjoy the large deck in the back...your choice. Or spend a day exploring right here in Mariposa!

What makes this house unique

Close to Yosemite! Quiet, secluded, nice views over rooftops, older charm, which makes it feel comfy. Makes you go back in time just a little. Very close to many historic places. Check with our visitors center for all the local happenings. Lots of summer music at the Art Park, yearly events such as Butterfly Days, Mariposa County Fair, Carter Ranch Music Festival, Summer Fest (Suds and Sausage), Tomato Fest, Farm tour and Christmas home tour....too many to mention!

Guestbook comments from the owner

John & Cindy:

Just wanted to say Thank You for allowing me and my family to stay in your rental during our special time. Its such a beautiful place, so peaceful and serene. Morning coffee on the deck was wonderful. The view of the mountains from the deck is amazing. The kids loved playing games and sitting out at the table under the stars just talking and enjoying the peacefulness of the evening time. Its such a nice place and so full of character. We had such a great time. Actually, didn't want to leave. You are so kind and generous. I'm sure that all the families to follow will say the same thing. How could they not? Once again, thank you for sharing with us and all that you have done. This time will always hold a very special place in our hearts as well as you.

The z's retreat was a perfect cottage style stay in Mariposa!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at the Z's retreat in order to enjoy a day up in Yosemite. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The beds were comfortable, kitchen and house had everything you would need and our dog felt very welcome. The backyard was perfect for our dog and nice for lounging. The proximity to town and restaurants was also very convenient. 5-10 min walk depending on where you want to eat. The owners were very responsive and very kind. We look forward to staying there for our next Yosemite trip!

Amazing Property and Pet Friendly!

  • 5 of 5

This home is, hands down, one of the best places we have stayed in and we can't wait to visit again.

I'm going to start with the pet friendly aspect because we had a difficult time figuring out where we wanted to go and stay, for a week, with our large breed Bernadoodle (Bernese Mountain Dog and Standard Poodle Mix) who weighs 90 lbs.

Pet Friendly-I loved the fact that my dog was able to come indoors and stay with us as well as be left to the spacious backyard that has a high wooden planked fence and a latching gate that separates the deck from the backyard. There are plastic dishes for dogs if you need them, a spare leash if you forget, and a few milkbones - but we still brought our own pet food bowls because we needed larger bowls. Make sure you bring poop bags (there are some to hold you over) and use them to clean up after your dog and place it in the trash can that is latched and sealed away from the yard so they cant get to it and stay safe. My dog is crate trained so we collapsed our crate and brought it with us. There are two doors that you can utilize during your stay. Door #1 is the front door that has a good size rug as you enter from the front porch to the living room and Door #2 the side door where the key lock is located enters into the kitchen with a smaller mat. We decided to set up our large kennel in front of Door #1 on the rug and utilize Door #2 for traffic which allowed my dog to see everyone in the living room and hallways when he was crated at night and helped set up a routine for him when it was time to go out at night to the backyard. If you have more than 1 kennel then bring an extra thicker mat (not a towel) so that your crate doesn't scuff up the hardwood floor. Know that if you take your pet to Yosemite that they are only allowed on paved, handicap access trails.

Location: The home is located within walking distance of the "town" of mariposa which includes shops, restaurants, taverns, and grocery store. It was just the right distance from Yosemite.

Home: The two rooms are spacious, have closet and drawer space, and the beds are comfortable. The kitchen was large enough and stocked for cooking and tools for grilling outside on the BBQ. The house was extremely clean and well kept - both inside and outside.

Need Help?: There is an information binder and visitor center near by.

Quaint and Convenient

  • 5 of 5

Z' s retreat was the perfect place for us to stay! Quaint, charming, and private with a convenient location to the highway and the grocery store. The beds were very comfortable which is a big plus in our book. We felt very "at home" there. There was a case of water there to greet us (which we so appreciated!) And many of the conveniences of home were supplied...spices to cook with, coffee, laundry detergent, etc. Cindy was very easy and sweet to text with. All 4 of us agreed we would stay at Z's Retreat if ever in the area again!!

Beautiful, tidy, well equipped and thoughtfully set up!

  • 5 of 5

Walking distance to a grocery store, restaurants, and the main drag. In unit laundry. So many thoughtful details --- there's a HDMI cable for the DVD player so you can hook up a laptop to the TV. The wifi works great. The rooms are big with spacious closets and there's just a feeling of capacity. The swamp cooler on the roof cools the whole house well! The yard is fenced in and perfect for accompanying pets. We felt that every detail had been thought of and attended to and the house was beyond perfect for our forays into Yosemite.
