Glitches in Paradise

Air Conditioning in Bedroom didn't work. The hot water timer was not working. The bed was terrible and the pillows even worse! Eventually we got a portable ac unit put in by a great handyman that worked with the rental agency. The timer for the water heater got reset and we had hot water the last two days. The bed and pillows we were stuck with. In addition the lounge chairs on the lanai were both torn and you ended up sitting on the cross bars. We sat in chairs and put our feet up instead. The living room was gorgeous as advertised and the stereo was great once you figured out how everything worked. The flat screen was new and worked flawlessly. Nothing could fault the view as it was spectacular. This unit really needs some fine tuning. The owner was willing to give us one night free for our trouble. It seems to me that the Property Management representative could have done a better job in monitoring this unit. If things are broken or wearing out, they should let the owner know that it's necessary to replace items. I'm sure that is what the owner pays for in their management fee. I would come back if I could be assured that these items had been taken care of. There is so much there to like, it's a shame that these things happened. I must also mention that this was one of the hottest and most humid times I have ever experienced in Hawaii. The repair man said A/C units were breaking all over the Island. I have rented many Condos on vacations and was disappointed that so many things distracted from our enjoyment.

Owner's Response: Aloha, My apologies for the problems you experienced. It was unfortunate that two major appliance repairs occurred during your stay. However some credit must be given to the fact that the management team made every effort to promptly solve these problems delivering a portable AC the same day as reported and coordinating the repair of the water heater which required a licensed electrician within 24 hours of being reported. We have calls in to the cleaner, inspector and owner to update bedding and lanai cushions. Thank you for bringing these to our attention the other guests this year didn't report any areas of concern. One guest even called to ask if the owner would consider selling the property as they absolutely loved it. This is a five star property one of the best vacation rentals on the Island and Whalers Realty Management is one of the most responsive and hard working management teams on Maui - we hope you have a better experience next time.

great location, great unit, high end, centrally located

We stayed in this unit back in June of '09 (the dates wouldn't go back that far), and of the six trips to Puamana, in four units, this was an absolute favorite.

Puamana generally is great, but the ocean front are the best, and this unit was nicely upgraded and well stocked. You park on one side of your unit, walk through, and there's your lanai, and in the distance, Larry Ellison's island of Lanai. It's stunning, and easy. As of the time we were there, we could bbq on our lanai, which is so much better than community bbq's, which can be inconvenient, dirty, and frustrating. There's no one above you, so it's quite private and quiet.

You can watch the surfers from your kitchen or living room.

The views were the most open of any unit we've stayed in.

It's not just an end unit, but unlike most, they've opened the side window, AND they have no on else close on that side, so it makes for spectacular views.

You can enjoy the ocean nearly as much from inside as out with such open walls.

Anyway, loved this unit and would recommend it highly! Thanks to the owners for sharing with all of us.

The home is central to Puamana, which means Lahaina isn't too far away. With such a big property, if you like to walk to town, there's a significant distance between one end and the other.

And it's away from the highway, so unless you consider crashing waves 'noisy', it's quite quiet in this area (which isn't true of all of Puamana.)

It's also quite close to the clubhouse in case you want to pop over and sit in their gorgeous space, or just borrow a book.

The only negative is that the bedroom is away from the ocean. That has allowed for a much more open view, but it means you won't sleep with the sound of crashing waves. Frankly, unless the bedroom is on the 2nd floor, I couldn't sleep with the door open anyway--the property is super safe, but petty crimes of opportunity are an issue (likely through the islands), so I would personally lock up for the soundest sleep if you are on ground level.

The owners get both the sense of safety and the crashing ocean sounds as they have an ocean view suite upstairs. As of the time we rented, they kept that to themselves--who could blame them.

Exceeptional location wonderful property,

I have stayed in other units in Puamana over the years but this one is by far the best. The location is perfect, it is close to the ocean pool and clubhouse. The unit is very nicely furnished, with high speed internet, flat screen TV's, CD & DVD player, fully equiped kitchen and a great living area. The view from the lanai is as good as it gets. Lahaina is within walking distance we walked in for breakfast and shopping.
