Tucson Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Tucson Glass Cottage: open-concept living in the desert

This architect-designed original home was completed in early 2013. High sloping ceilings, floor-to-ceiling glass walls, polished concrete floors, custom poured concrete feature walls, bamboo drop ceilings, beautiful recessed lighting and myriad 'Architectural Digest' touches make this the perfect spot for the discerning traveller seeking an urbane hideaway in the Sonoran desert.

The panoramic floor-to-ceiling glass walls mean you will be completely in touch with the desert landscape. Saguaros and other cacti surround you. Quail, rabbits, javelinas, coyotes may wander by. You will wake up on the bedroom to the sun rising over the Catalina Mountains to the east and can view the sunset over the Tucson Mountains from the dining area.

Covered quartzite stone decks facing both west and east. Acacia chairs and table on the east deck, bistro table and chairs on the sunset deck. Lounge chairs for sunny afternoons. Driveway parking for one car, a second car can be parked in a pull-out immediately across from the Cottage.

The Glass Cottage comprises two separate units, connected by a covered breezeway.

One half of the Glass Cottage has a Poliform queen size bed; Wassily-style chairs and a Frank Ghery cocktail table and 'Wiggle Chair' in the sitting area facing a working acorn fireplace; dressing room with ample drawers and hanging space; huge two-person glass shower with stone floor and stunning views to the west; vanity area with bamboo sink on cantilevered concrete counter; and a separate and fully enclosed toilet room. Facing east, you will wake up facing the sun rising over the Catalina Mountains.

A few feet away across the covered breezeway, the other half of the Glass Cottage contains the fully equipped kitchen with beautiful tiled countertops; a custom-designed trestle oak dining (or work) table, with 6 chairs; a Danish swivel reading chair and Damson reading lamp; and a leather flip-down sofa, ideal for an afternoon nap. Facing west, you'll be treated to the sun setting over the Tucson Mountains as you prepare dinner.

Tucson Glass Cottage shares 3.3 acres with only the owner's residence, some 100 yards away and oriented to ensure privacy for both homes. The Cottage is accessed by a private gravel road, shared only by the owner's home. The acreage is in the center of a group of 6 similarly large plots, far from traffic.

This is the perfect spot for an individual or couple seeking real tranquility and a touch of luxury in a magical desert setting. Yet an easy drive into the University area, downtown, and into the magnificent Saguaro National Park.

The propert is incredible! Top of the line on everything. It was difficult to leave. A perfect location for a secluded getaway without having to go far from city center. Can't wait 'til I can go back!

Desert Modern Gem

  • 5 of 5

Living in this modern work of art surrounded by Saguaros in bloom and every cacti you could dream of was pure bliss ! The floor-to-ceiling glass walls and the natural materials used offer an exquisite desert experience. At all times, we were in connection with this superb nature surrounding us. The birds, the 7 am cottontails (loyal, every morning) and the views, stunning from everywhere, from sunrise to sunset. We felt like we were glamping in an Aman private suite for a fraction of the price.

As modernism aficionados we really appreciated the architecture and the mid-century modern touches.

Our arrival and departure were really efficient and pleasant with lovely Carella.

The house was very clean and it smelled SO naturally good (no toxic air freshner here). Every appliance was high quality, and the air conditionner worked well and fast (but we didn't have to use it except to refresh ourselves when we got back from a hike).

The location is also perfect, secluded but close enough to Whole Foods and Sprouts, close to Saguaro National Park West, Desert museum, Catalina State Park and more...

We will be back for sure :)

Thank you Jim and Carella for this sublime stay !

Modern Desert Gem

  • 5 of 5

This house is the perfect desert hideway.

Living in a modern work of art, surrounded by Saguaros and every cacti you could dream of was pure bliss. Every morning around 7 we were delighted to see cottontails, I even saw a Jack Rabbit running behind the house. The desert views are stunning in every light and from everywhere.

As modernism aficionados we really appreciated the architecture of the house and the classic mid-century modern touches. The house is clean, smells goooood (naturally good, no toxic air fresheners !) and the appliances were also top notch.

Do not worry that the house might get too hot during daytime: the air conditioner works well and fast (but we never really needed to use it except to refresh ourselves when we got back from a hike for a couple of minutes).

The location is the perfect base for exploring this amazing area. Very close to Saguaro National park West and to Catalina State Park.

Carella was wonderful, efficient and very respecful of our privacy :)

Thank you James for this modern desert gem !

Superb Sonoran Desert Immersion Experience

  • 4 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Glass Cottage. It was a secluded and comfortable destination at which we could while away an entire day or use as a launching pad for a day trip to any point of the compass. Upon returning from our first hike in the Tucson Mountain sector of the Saguaro National Park, we noted how many of the same plants were growing (and blooming) right outside the expansive scene-grabbing windows of the cottage–the owner and architect were careful to leave most of the site undisturbed. The two wings of the cottage face opposite directions, and since each wing has ample lounging space (indoors and outdoors) you can find either sun or shade at any time of day. There are desert and mountain views all around. The kitchen is well-equipped though some dishes are out of reach for height-challenged guests (there is a step stool). We loved the sun waking us early through the east-facing window wall of the bedroom wing (late sleepers beware!). The harsher light is the late afternoon sun in the living/kitchen wing, but sunsets are the upside. The designer mirrored cabinet above the bath sink is attractive and handy for keeping toiletries out of sight. As of the date of our stay (Spring 2016), the shower spray heads need repair or replacement; water spray is leaky and irregular (the minerals in the hard water must take a toll on fixtures and glass). The cottage is furnished with classic modernist gems, like Wassily chairs, and gallery-worthy works of art. Shopping options are plentiful but we mostly frequented Sprouts or Whole Foods due to their proximity to Frost Gelato (corner of Ina and Oracle). There's a great bike (and walking) path along the Santa Cruz River about a mile from the property. Our arrival and departure were easy and efficient, thanks to the friendly greeter/hostess. Other than several rabbits and copious birds, we didn't have any passersby during our stay, which afforded us two glorious weeks of privacy, relaxation and play-it-by-ear excursions. Because we hope to return to this unique and special accommodation, we enthusiastically recommend it to art-, architecture- and nature-loving adults who adhere to the "leave no trace" principle when they step out into the world or into someone else's home.

Happiest Days of my Life

  • 5 of 5

The other reviews are spot on about pictures not doing the Glass Cottage justice. I pulled up to the house after 4.5 days of driving from New York and was blown away by the landscape and design of the cottage. Carella met me and made sure I settled in. The Glass Cottage was my home for two months this winter where I was able to relax, work and take in the desert. The cottage is basically like living in a piece of Art, thoughtfully designed and complete with everything one would want for a getaway. Located away from it all but so close to everything you need - shops, trails, the loop and I-10. Downtown is a quick 20 minute drive and we were able to explore all of Tuscon with ease. We had wine and cheese most nights on the front patio for sunset and witnessed sunrise from the back patio. Seeing coyotes and javelina pass by in the evenings was a real treat for us East Coasters.

Jim and Carella were wonderful Hosts. I would recommend this house to anyone who appreciates being part of nature while living in high design. Yes the cottage is two separate buildings - which I thought was perfect - I could work in the living side while my husband slept on the other side.

I'll be back in 2017!!!

Amazing inside and out

  • 5 of 5

We were blown away as soon as we pulled up to the glass house. The pictures do not do the property justice. It's surrounded by cacti, hiding you from the neighbors, and though you feel like you're in the middle of the desert, you are only about 5 minutes from the Grocery Store and Starbucks. We drank coffee on one of the two patios every morning and made fires every night in the bedroom's fireplace. The kitchen is very well equipped with appliances, and we took advantage of the outside grill. James has made sure the house has everything you could want or need, and Carella is very helpful during check in and anytime after if you need her. If you are looking to get away from it all without giving up modern amenities, then this is the perfect place for you.
