About the property

Tucson Glass Cottage: open-concept living in the desert

This architect-designed original home was completed in early 2013. High sloping ceilings, floor-to-ceiling glass walls, polished concrete floors, custom poured concrete feature walls, bamboo drop ceilings, beautiful recessed lighting and myriad 'Architectural Digest' touches make this the perfect spot for the discerning traveller seeking an urbane hideaway in the Sonoran desert.

The panoramic floor-to-ceiling glass walls mean you will be completely in touch with the desert landscape. Saguaros and other cacti surround you. Quail, rabbits, javelinas, coyotes may wander by. You will wake up on the bedroom to the sun rising over the Catalina Mountains to the east and can view the sunset over the Tucson Mountains from the dining area.

Covered quartzite stone decks facing both west and east. Acacia chairs and table on the east deck, bistro table and chairs on the sunset deck. Lounge chairs for sunny afternoons. Driveway parking for one car, a second car can be parked in a pull-out immediately across from the Cottage.

The Glass Cottage comprises two separate units, connected by a covered breezeway.

One half of the Glass Cottage has a Poliform queen size bed; Wassily-style chairs and a Frank Ghery cocktail table and 'Wiggle Chair' in the sitting area facing a working acorn fireplace; dressing room with ample drawers and hanging space; huge two-person glass shower with stone floor and stunning views to the west; vanity area with bamboo sink on cantilevered concrete counter; and a separate and fully enclosed toilet room. Facing east, you will wake up facing the sun rising over the Catalina Mountains.

A few feet away across the covered breezeway, the other half of the Glass Cottage contains the fully equipped kitchen with beautiful tiled countertops; a custom-designed trestle oak dining (or work) table, with 6 chairs; a Danish swivel reading chair and Damson reading lamp; and a leather flip-down sofa, ideal for an afternoon nap. Facing west, you'll be treated to the sun setting over the Tucson Mountains as you prepare dinner.

Tucson Glass Cottage shares 3.3 acres with only the owner's residence, some 100 yards away and oriented to ensure privacy for both homes. The Cottage is accessed by a private gravel road, shared only by the owner's home. The acreage is in the center of a group of 6 similarly large plots, far from traffic.

This is the perfect spot for an individual or couple seeking real tranquility and a touch of luxury in a magical desert setting. Yet an easy drive into the University area, downtown, and into the magnificent Saguaro National Park.

Lovely, quiet contemporary house

  • 5 of 5

I had a very enjoyable stay at the glass cottage. It's in a quiet location-- no neighborhood noise at all-- and very private despite all the windows. It's surrounded by desert vegetation so you feel immersed in the desert when you're inside. Lots of wildlife around, too. I thought both "pods" of the house were comfortable and pleasant to spend time in; the west-facing kitchen/dining room one can get hot in the afternoon but the AC cooled it off fine. The kitchen was well-stocked. The house is very convenient to shopping and to Saguaro National Park. I'd definitely stay here again.

amazing sunrises and sunsets!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in the glass cottage. Jim and especially Carella were very easy to deal with and made our stay easy. We explored the Tucson area from here but were always pleased to return home to watch the sunset. Mornings were amazing, when the sun comes up you are gently awakened and feel as if you are alone in the Sonoran desert. We sure enjoyed the glass cottage and would recommend the glass cottage to anyone who is planning to visit the Tucson area.

Very private

  • 5 of 5

Had a great stay. Would stay again. A television wouldn't be a bad addition & a more comfortable couch. Would love to stay again in the future, already planning another stay.

Owner's Response: So pleased you're already planning your return! We've had the folding couch repaired, and regret that it was not working well during your visit.

Unique and Lovely Setting

  • 5 of 5

This was a perfect property for a couple. It feels isolated (it really isn't) and affords wonderful views of nature from all angles. The sun gently woke us in the morning and we could see millions of stars at night. The juxtaposition of the home's clean, modern lines with the natural surroundings is delightful.

The home had everything we needed-from laundry with supplies to several types of coffee makers to plenty of towels. (Bring your own shampoo, though.) The kitchen was better stocked than most rentals and one could easily cook/grill a full meal for six or eight people. It was very clean and the woman who checked us in was very helpful. The only negative I can muster is that a more comfortable seating option in the living room would be appreciated. The futon was fine if I wanted to lie down and read, but difficult to sit on due to the recline of the backrest.

When we considered this property, we were a bit concerned about how far west it was from the center of Tucson. DON'T BE. It took us no longer than 30 minutes to get anywhere, and it turned out that many of the activities were actually EASIER to get to from this location because of it's proximity to the highway and attractions. (Sonoran Desert Museum, Gate's Pass, Old Tucson, the airport) We highly recommend this property.

Great spot for seclusion and unplugging

  • 5 of 5

The Glass Cottage is a great place to stay if you want some privacy and to take in the Tuscon landscape. Between the two buildings you have clear views all around the cottage. Carella (the property manager) was very friendly and gave me some maps for biking around the area, and aside from that I had the entire week to myself.

I had to get used to being woken up by the sun, since the bed faces the rising sun, and the wind was surprisingly loud against the glass walls. The construction on Ina made just about everything at least 20 minutes away, but otherwise my stay was comfortable and easy.

I had few problems with the internet (mainly between getting my computers to switch between the main router and the range extender), and no problems streaming from Netflix if you turn the quality down to SD, so if you don't want to unplug, that's fine too.

A beautiful and unique property

We spent 6 weeks at the house this spring. It lives up to the pictures and has a wonderful rural feeling despite being very convenient to everything you need. Love to stay there again one day...
