About Robin Morris

I am a full time potter and an avid outdoor enthusiast. Besides whitewater kayaking and skiing I love to bicycle and have traveled by bike across Australia, New Zealand, England, Tasmania, Ireland, Scottland, Wales, the Isle of Mann and the Northeastern US. I also love to hike and dream of someday getting the tiime to Hike the entire Appliachian Trail as a thru-hiker

Robin Morris purchased this chateau / country house in 1999

Why Robin Morris chose Pennsylvania

The Laurel Highlands of Pennsylvania is an outdoor mecca. It boasts the best whitewater kayaking and rafting in the Eastern US, has the longest rails to trail bicycle trail in the states and an amazing array of hiking and mountain biking trails. We are surrounded by 4 State parks and our four ski resorts keep us active for the winter season.Being adjacent to Ohiopyle state park we have a front row seat to all of these things. We are secluded but close enough to the small towns of Confluence and Ohiopyle that anything we need can be easily obtained. In addition, we are located close to Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob and these along with the other cultural attractions available just an hour and a half away in PLittsburgh we feel we have the best of all worlds

What makes this chateau / country house unique

We are riverside and this gorgeous Chalet has a large stone fireplace (two stories high!) cathedral ceilings, all Cypress ceiling, expansive decking, outdoor fire pit, large yard and beautiful landscaping. It is a true dream property.

A beautiful ambience, great hosts, perfect for our group of 3.

We came to celebrate a birthday--three friends who love hiking and just wanted some down time to hang out. Dan and Robin were wonderful hosts, checking in on us the first night to make sure we had everything we needed. The chalet is cozy, surrounded by trees and situated between a river and some train tracks. When the door or windows were propped, you could hear the river. You can also hear the train when it goes by, but it's not loud and in fact we LOVED it. We spent hours by the fire each night, reveling in the beauty and down time. During the days, we hiked in Ohiopyle...despite the heavy snowfall, the temperature was above 30 and made for a perfect hike. Before leaving, we purchased some beautiful pottery from Robin and Dan's shop...overall, it was just what we wanted.

We were three women, 2 of us mommies in deep need of sleep, and we realized once arriving that we each wanted a room to ourselves (rather than one sleeping on the couch or the loft overlook, which requires a climb up a ladder and could be cumbersome if you needed to use the restroom in the dark night). Robin graciously opened the downstairs area for us at the last minute and it was perfect: an entire additional bedroom (plus, if you needed them, 2 more beds and a kitchen/bathroom).

Highly recommended!

Our own Polar Express holiday get away!

  • 5 of 5

What a perfect setting for a Christmas away from home! The house was everything we hoped for and then some. The owners are so gracious and kind; there is nothing they didn't think of including providing us a Christmas tree so our family holiday felt truly festive. The icing on the cake was the train that runs by the house. It's not loud and cumbersome; it's magical and makes you feel like you've taken a step back in time. The train actually stopped in front of the house on Christmas Eve with all its glorious sounds - we were already in pj's so we felt like it was the Polar Express picking us up to take us on a hot chocolate drinking train ride to the North Pole!

Should we ever need to be in SW PA again Paddler's Lane will always be my home away from home.

Fished in the River with my Navy Brothers. Sat around the fire outside and enjoyed the evenings. Used the grill almost every day.

Enjoyed our stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time during our stay at Robin's chalet. The property worked great for the adults and children in our group. The kids loved the river behind the chalet and they enjoyed seeing the trains. The trains didn't really bother anyone in our group. We hope to visit again next year.

a prefect getaway in the forest, on the side of a river

  • 5 of 5

I love Paddler's Lane! I've stayed there several times over the years. Everything about the experience is excellent.

The owner, Robin, is wonderful, genuinely nice and down to earth. She is always attentive to our needs, and available to provide whatever possible to make our stay a top notch experience.

The interior design of the chalet is beautiful. Everything from the colors used, to the well chosen fixtures to the high quality furnishings. The overall finish is excellent. It's beautifully done and comfortable. I particularly like the abundant natural wood (cypress) throughout the chalet. Robin is a potter, and artist, and colors the interior reflect this. The colors are very warm. It feels very natural, and really works with the beautiful outdoors of the Laurel Highlands.

And the property itself is absolutely beautiful. The Youghiogheny River and Ohiopyle State Park border one side of the property, giving it a calm, running water feeling. But the river also sports a wild side, offering Class II up to Class V white water rapids. Robin is a kayaker and guide, and an encyclopedia of knowledge of the river. For kayaking, canoeing and fishing the area cannot be beat. The hiking and biking trails along the river and in the state park are excellent.

There are also two Frank Lloyd Wright homes that are in easy driving distance of Paddlers Lane, Falling Water and Kentuck Knob. Falling Water is world famous, and truly extraordinary. It features a river that runs underneath the property. Highly recommend seeing it.

There is a stone fire pit on the property. So a very enjoyable evening can be had star gazing around the campfire.

My dogs are always welcome at PL, the owner encourages responsible pet owners to bring their dogs for stays.

This very relaxing getaway is really unique, and keeps us coming back, year after year.

Wonderful Thanksgiving Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at Paddler's Lane Chalet over the Thanksgiving holiday in 2013, and I'm finally getting around to writing a review of Paddler's Lane now that the hub-bub of the holidays are over with. First, we choose Paddler's Lane because we wanted some much-needed rest and relaxation at a location that would be peaceful, serene, and far away from the hustle-bustle. We were not disappointed in our choice with Paddler's Lane. The chalet is gorgeous - the photos truly don't do it justice. And the location right on the river is perfect. The train traffic, while definitely noisy, didn't bother my husband and I. In fact, we found it interesting and a bit of a novelty to watch the trains go whizzing by. We slept just great - the bedroom we used (the river side bedroom) was comfy. The bedroom on the other side of the chalet looked to be equally comfy/cozy. Everything from the bathrooms to the kitchen (and everything in between) was spotless. We didn't meet Robin but we fell in love with Dan. He was/is the perfect host - friendly without being intrusive. As well, he was very attentive to any need. Truly, we can't say enough wonderful things about Dan. We both said that he's the type of guy you'd love to have as a neighbor and hang out with. Just a really good guy. The same goes for the chalet itself - the furniture was all very comfortable, the tvs were great, the fireplace ROCKED (we had wonderful fires every night), and there are a ton of DVD movies to choose from to watch. The area is really charming. Confluence is even smaller than we had anticipated, but again, we loved that. And if you want/need a "larger city", Uniontown is a very short drive away. We went to Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob and had a WONDERFUL time - even a visit late in the season such as our's was super. One last suggestion - go to The Stone House Restaurant and Country Inn for dinner - the food was simply amazing and it's not far of a drive. We will definitely be coming back to Paddler's Lane in the future - we want to explore the beautiful area in the summer or early fall when we can make use of the hiking trails and all the water activities available in the area.

the Chalet also has a loft space which will sleep two as a sleeping option. We count this as a sleeping OPTION rather than additional sleeping space as it is more suitable for young adults who quickly become enamored with it. This space is not as suitable for mature adults as it is accessed by ladder and the sleeping cots are on the floor. Kids and young adults fall in love with it; mature adults want their own bedroom.
