This year-round vacation home (1,800 square feet) has been in our family for three generations. It has an exceptional location on a private peninsula with 1,500 feet of water frontage. Every room of the house has stunning views of Lake Hamilton. The main house has three bedrooms (a queen, a double, and a single with two single beds), and two baths. The kitchen and bathrooms (both with showers, no tub) were renovated in 2011. The living room and west bedroom were renovated in 2013. There is a gated private drive with plenty of parking. The long shoreline supports a variety of wildlife. You are likely to see great blue heron, ducks, geese, cormorants. The lake is stocked, and the deeper waters just off the south shore are considered some of the best fishing on the lake. There is a public boat launch a hundred feet from our driveway, and the property has a dock as well as a raft.
Each season provides special vacation opportunities; swimming, boating, fishing, fall foliage, ice fishing and skiing. There are also activities and events weekly at Old
No Smoking in the buildings.

We are three siblings (Zabby, John, and Robin) who are sharing the family project of renting 'The Peni' where we spent all our childhood summers swimming, boating, fishing, playing with cousins, and riding our pony. Zabby runs a study program in Paris for a New England prep school, John is a retired teacher, and Robin is a lawyer. Both John and Robin live in Holland near 'The Peni'.
Elizabeth Scott, Peni rentals, Lucie Satkowski purchased this house in 1926
In 1926, our grandparents acquired a part interest in 'The Peni' when they purchased the hill just to the west of it. They quickly realized it was an ideal swimming place. At the time, there were no other 'camps' on the lake. They went to great lengths to acquire the remaining shares of this extraordinary spot, and their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren have benefited ever since. It continues to be a favorite place for the family to gather for swimming, boating, and family reunions.
Swimming, boating, fishing, privacy, space, wildlife, and bird life. The long, convoluted shoreline of 'The Peni' provides many swimming spots as well as places to explore. There are lovely walks in every direction including into the Quinebaug Woods, formerly part of the family property, now owned by Trustees of the Reservation and open to the public. There is a wide variety of fine dining in nearby Sturbridge.
My husband & I searched extensively for a lake house rental that would comfortably accommodate us & our dear friends from Paris, France as well as our Chocolate Lab, Bailey. My husband & I have rented many vacation properties in the past with the "Peni" being by far the best. The "Peni" exceeded our expectations & was truly wonderful in every way. The peninsular location afforded privacy & stunning views from every window of the lovely abode. The house is inviting, spacious & so very comfortable. One can feel the warmth & history of the generations of family who has loved, owned & cared for the property. Splendid breezes off the lake along with cool shade from towering pines dare you to not relax. Many a delicious meal was prepared in the well equipped & roomy kitchen. Bailey enjoyed swimming in the lake with our grand nieces who made day trips over Memorial day weekend with their parents. Nearby trail systems provided great hiking experiences. We greatly appreciated the welcome we received from Lucie upon our arrival & her assistance as we prepared for our stay at the "Peni". Many thanks also to Zabby who accommodated our dates. We wish we could have stayed longer & hope to return again.
We returned again to The Peni to spend time with our Southbridge-Webster relatives. The entire setting really was ideal to discuss past memories and further discussions of our family tree. The warmth and character of this comfortable lakeside retreat makes a stay here so memorable. The decor and upgrades makes a stay here very special. Hopefully it is available every time we reurn to the area. Thank you Lucy for all that you did to make our stay so wonderful!
We were looking for a getaway from it all....just to relax. The "Peni" was a great destination. The house was tastefully decorated and had all the amenities that you could need or want. All you need to do is pack your bags nothing else needed. Several great restaurants in the area that can be considered 4 stars. We wish we had stayed longer!
The "Peni" is a quiet property with a well designed house that the owners clearly placed some time and effort into its' design and details. Within ten minutes there is a large state park with ample hiking trails. We were able to enjoy the woods in the morning and the lake in the afternoon. We were sorry to leave and would definitely consider returning.
My husband and I rented this cottage because we loved the appeal of a modernly equipped home with great décor AND the fact that it was really a short drive from our home in RI. (about an hr!) This may seem kinda crazy but it allowed for us to have my family bop in and out throughout the week allowing for some really nice down time with every one!
Needless to say the peninsula had great views from everywhere within the cottage (water everywhere!) and the breeze coming off the lake daily was wonderful. The chairs just outside the door became "THE spot" for coffee in the morning and then with a line up of family with drinks and conversation in the afternoon......welllll really all day! haha! We were also able to watch the pair of eagles which were regularly circling the lake and perched on a neighbors tree branch overlooking the lake often. That was pretty cool!
The beach area was really nice and I escaped to chill on the dock with a book, a drink and a breeze often. Many nice places to find a bit of privacy if you wanted it. (both sunny and shady!) We never used the canoe....we brought our 2 kayaks and made regular jaunts out to explore the lake. Looked for places for sale on the lake. We always do this as Rob and I dream of perhaps retiring in a lakehouse......but NAH! none of 'em were cutting the mustard! Any chance you want to sell the Peni any time?? LOL Great views, privacy, modern house, single story, clean, great layout! Every one was comfortable. From my parents who are in their 80's, my two son's and their girlfriends....they swapped out time spent in the "guest" cottage which indeed was rustic but very comfortable and cute place, and in the house. Room for all. And we had day visitors, my brother, his wife and my nephew. Great day at the swimming hole and when the thunder clouds rolled in everybody could gather in the house and have room to sit comfortably.
Only complaints....Bit of a bummer that the rungs on the ladder to the swim dock were missing so the less spry in the group shall we say, found it difficult to use it. And that on one day they were treating the lake for invasive weeds which required us to stay out of the water for a day. Not your fault but was a bit hard to just LOOK at the lake rather than be in it or on it as that is what the lake is for!
That being said, when my sons pulled up to the cottage the first thing they both said was, "This place is GREAT!!!!! it's got everything!" Which I think says it all I think!
We just returned after our wonderful week long stay at "The Peni". I miss this lake house already. My oldest granddaughter asked if she could live there forever. Buy it grandma, please? First off, the place was extremely clean. So important to me. The home was a sweet combo of modern and cottage and nicely decorated with some antiques here and there, but we felt very comfortable using everything. They were gracious enough to allow us to bring our elderly chihuahua, who slept comfortably on his blanket that we brought from home. The laundry room was a dream to have with 3 children and one of the bathroom showers was large and had corner seats. The cottage came well equipped with all that we needed and we definitely could have packed less. The girls fished off the dock (with luck), and enjoyed the short woodsy walk to the swimming hole that had a nice sitting area, a warf, and a canoe ready for our use. My daughter and son- in-law loved taking the boat out for some peace and quiet and my husband enjoyed fishing behind the house and at the tip of the peninsula. We were lucky enough to see the blue heron that seems to be a permanent tenant on this property as well as ducks and frogs and many cool bugs, (as the kids described them). A few walks around scored us some blueberries and grampa used them to make some great blueberry pancakes. If you love nature but still want to be close enough to do the touristy thing, this is the place for you. Now, that being said, no place is perfect, and the one thing I would like to see improved on is the squeaky foundation of the full size bed, but oh how I miss that lake breeze right now.
