average rating of 4.1 based on 10 reviews

My expectation was completely off on this one - I thought given the very high price, the quality would also be high, it wasn't.

First the positives :

- The owners - very, very nice people, couldn't be more welcoming and helpful

- The location - fantastic, parking space right at the door, a short walk / bike ride from the center, Key West is beautiful

- Comfortable bed, clean pillows (improved from a previous review)

The negatives

The roof was too low for us, at 5'10" I was too tall (I do not consider myself tall). I thought the smallness was quaint at first, 3 days of banging my head cured me of that. At 5'4" my wife also had a few bumps on her head

- Furnishing - well used, minimum investment, reminiscent of a student flat, very old TV , no microwave, minimal silverware

- Bedroom - cramped ... but- those charming key west roosters roaming wild in the neighborhood crowed all night long - they're loud, I thought I could sleep through anything - I was wrong.

- Bathroom - shower - not practical - the bath is under the smallest part of the roof - there's just no room... if you are tiny you can maybe shower, bathing was a nightmare. The open air outside shower offered as an alternative... when it came down to it, we didn't want to use it.

Price - way overpriced - once you include tax & cleaning this is more than I've paid for very good hotel rooms. At the price I would expect this to be chic and exclusively furnished.

Overall - we loved key west - and you are very close to the action here. This property however was not for us, we shouldn't have booked it - I felt misled by the previous glowing reviews which is the reason I am even writing this.

I'm sorry - we would not stay there again or recommend it

Owner's Response: We are always thankful for reviews from those who stay with us. Naturally we prefer those that are glowing, and fortunately we do get many of those. When people leave feeling disappointed, we feel badly because had things been brought to our attention while they were here with us we would have been able to remedy some of them. Not all of them in this case however. There is absolutely nothing we can do about the roosters in Key West. They simply are. There is also nothing we can do to make the apartment larger; we have done all we can to make it a comfortable space with all the necessary amenities. When my husband speaks with a potential renter he always asks them how tall they are and fully explains the issue with the sloping ceiling.( The photos on the site also fully reveal this.) This apartment is not described as 'high end' nor 'chic and exclusively furnished' and although there are places where what they spent a night will buy you that type of lodging it is not Key West in February; that cost would be more than three times our price, plus tax, etc. Taking care however to do what we can we have installed a microwave, a slimline flatscreen TV, and have added new flatware.

Not so smitten as other reviewers.

We have rented places through VRBO in the U.S., Canada and France. Our experience at the "Caretaker's Apartment" marked the first time we wish we had stayed elsewhere.

The ceiling height was not a big problem. (We are both 5'6".) The combination tub/shower was a little inconvenient. The height ranges from maybe 3'6" to 4'6", which means one must either shower sitting down or bath (after filling the tub with the shower head as the tub faucet only leaks water). The owner compared the experience to being in an MRI, which was not far off. There is an outdoor shower but it is not enclosed; we took a pass.

A greater issue for us was an awkward, low buildout on the far side of the bed, which probably hides something mechanical that was not moved when the attic was converted. After getting in on the near side of the bed I had no idea it was there, tripped over it and fell hard during the night when I got up to use the bathroom. Future renters might take note. One other issue with the sleeping situation-- in an effort to find a decent pillow I took the pillowcase and sham off two in order to switch them. Both pillows were badly stained (with sweat, I suppose). Neither had a washable pillow protector so whether they had been laundered was debatable. I elected to use my fleece jacket as a pillow.

The location was great; bikes would have been fun but were not necessary if you enjoy walking. It should be noted that this space is over the home with young children that are up before seven, even on Sunday-- balls bouncing, blender buzzing, with no apparent concern for renters that might be asleep. The owner did warn us on arrival to expect the morning "alarm". I would have preferred to be made aware of the "alarm" in the property description.

We came away feeling the owners were far more interested in the renters' money than their comfort. Spending a couple nights' income on clean pillows, fresh bed linens, a couple towel bars (one 14" bar is not adequate in an apartment that sleeps 4), a tea kettle whose lid still has a handle, and a magazine or two newer than 2011 would go a long way to improve a renter's experience. One could even go crazy and buy a set of towels that actually matched. The time and money would be well spent, at least from this renters' point of view.

Owner's Response: We always feel badly when people who stay with us leave disappointed. and never more so than when we had been in residence while they were here and there were issues we could have addressed. The photos on the page clearly show the bathroom and bedroom ceiling and we always inquire as to the height of any potential guests before accepting any deposit or payments (hence the 'MRI'comment), explaining that the ceiling is low on the sides of the rooms. The outside shower is not included as an amenity but we offer its use to anyone who would prefer it to bathing in the apartment. It is not enclosed, but we do have an extremely private backyard. Our grandchildren are young, early risers who do not know Sunday from any other day of the week. However, because of this review we now withhold any blender usage until after 7 a.m. I have always tried to keep the children quiet and will continue in my attempts. We cannot enlarge the bedroom; we have tried to use the space as efficiently as possible and feel that a queen size bed is preferable to having more room around the bed. The pillows have been replaced; the tea kettle missing a top knob has been upgraded to an electric tea kettle and any outdated magazines have been removed -but if you want current magazines you will need to provide your own. Key West has a fabulous library. The towels have matching sets but all sets do not match. When they need to be replaced we will be cognizant of this. We are going to see if there is another convenient spot to hang another towel bar- there is no room in the bathroom for one more. Most people hang towels over the shower rod or over the porch railing to dry. Please know that if you do stay with us and we are in residence we are always available to discuss any complaints you may have and will do our very best to remedy the situation.

Everything we could have asked for and more!!!

My wife and I stayed in the apartment for 9 days, and it was the absolute perfect spot for us! From the very beginning when speaking with Dick, I knew that this would be the place for our first stay in Key West. Dick and Betsy are very welcoming hosts and their recommendations for places to see around town were spot on. The apartment is located right around the corner from the best Cuban restaurant in town, and just blocks from both the beach and Duval St where all the action is in Key West.

The air conditioners kept us cool when we needed them, and the apartment itself was exactly as it appears in the pictures. The bed was extremely comfortable and the kitchen served us perfectly for our morning breakfasts and small cooked meals as well. The balcony is a great space to read or relax the morning, and the grill on the side of the house was perfect for cooking up some meals in the afternoons!

It was very easy to communicate with Dick and Betsy during the entire stay, and you can tell that the property is well maintained. We would highly recommend anyone to stay in the apartment!

Cozy home in Key West

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed in the apartment with our 8 months old son. It was a great place to call home, while visiting Key West. The apartment had everything we needed for a 3 days stay, the little porch was great to sit on at night.

The location was perfect. On a quite street in walking distance from everything in Old town Key West. We walked to ft. zachary beach and it took about an hour, so there one might want to take the car. A supermarked was also close by.

Betsy and Richard were great hosts. Very friendlý and welcoming, from the first contact over email and phone back home, and during our stay there. We would definetly stay there again!

great place to stay

  • 5 of 5

Great place to stay in an accessible location. As written in other reviews, the owners are excellent- although they weren’t physically in Key West during our visit, they were extremely helpful before arriving and had promised to be easily accessible throughout our stay. They gave great recommendations to us (first-time visitors to KW). The location is perfect- far enough from the tourists and commotion but close enough to both Duval/Whitehead streets as well as the beach (within walking distance). For those wondering, there is a tiny refrigerator, a 2-burner stovetop, a toaster oven, coffee maker, and a limited number of pots/pans and plates, cups, and eating utensils available. There is also cable TV in the living room and high-speed internet (secure connection). As others said, the ceilings and doorways are low, and the bathtub is interesting (but showering is still feasible), but overall an enchanting place to stay. We’d love to come back!

Cozy apartment and great owners

  • 5 of 5

I have red all reviews before we rented the place and I was very impressed but little skeptical. Everything looked too nice to be true. We still decided to rent it and was the best decision for our vacation. The apartment was as we expected. I do not want to repeat what everybody already described, but I still want to emphasize that the price is well justified for what the apartments offers. Even a short walk to the Duval street with all restaurants, we still choose to cook quick dinners and breakfasts and was not a problem after we decided that the shortest stay in front of the stove. The grocery store (few blocks from apartment) was very handy. We enjoyed walking almost everywhere in the city, but a bicycle, scooter or electrical car rental is very popular. Dick and Betsy were so welcoming and friendly, we felt that we knew each other for long time. At departure was pretty hard to break our conversation and leave. We really enjoyed and promised that we will return soon.

We certanly reccomend this appartment.
