Welcome to La Malagueña, a getaway that will enthrall your senses and nurture your spirit.
Our house is in the heart of downtown Guanajuato in the most beautiful plaza in town-Plaza San Fernando. From our house you can comfortably walk to most historical and cultural sites and many language schools, restaurants, cafes, and bars. We're only a few steps from the Basilica de Guadalupe, Teatro Juarez, Mercado Hidalgo, and the University of Guanajuato. Since our house is in the heart of downtown you don't have to climb steep narrow streets or callejones.
Our home was originally built in the 18th century and has been restored and remodeled several times, the last time by the renowned Mexican artist, Juan Ibañez. It's made from adobe so it naturally warms and cools the house and the temperature inside is always ideal. Its construction is of stone and pine with copper accents. It takes advantage of the Mexican sun and sky and its position on the most beautiful square in Guanajuato with French doors opening onto the fountain below and a wonderful rooftop garden in which you can sit and while away the time, above it all.
Our place is ideal for the seasoned traveler who prefers the comforts of home combined with the uniqueness of a true Mexican experience.
You'll not only enjoy the comfort, style, and location of our place but also the hospitality of our staff. ¡BIENVENIDOS!!!

About Maria Demello
My husband and I lived in Guanajuato for many years and loved living there, however, due to the nature of our professions we had to relocate. We come back to Guanajuato every chance we get but when we are not there, we like to share our place with visiting travelers. Since we both love to travel, we try to provide our guests with the same standards of excellence that we expect when we travel.
Maria Demello purchased this House in 1997
Why Maria Demello chose Zona Centro
La Malagueña is truly a magical house. There is no other house in town quite like ours. The architecture is so unusual that it's difficult to describe but every room is filled with character and style. There are plants everywhere in the house, even in the bathrooms. The rooftop is a peaceful oasis with more than 100 plants and a great view of the mountains, Plaza San Roque, the University of Guanajuato, the Mercado that make you feel you're on top of the world. Our location is unbeatable! You are in the center of everything. You don't even have to go out of the house to enjoy Guanajuato because the vibrancy of the city comes to you. When you open the balcony doors to the plaza, you let in the festivities and can hear the concerts, view the performances, sing along with the troubadours or simply people watch as you enjoy a glass of wine or a Margarita.
What makes this House unique

Great party house.
Great location, easy walking distance to just about everything. We loved the home, but if you're someone who must have quiet to sleep, look elsewhere because there is something going on every night in the square. Better than this home is the staff. Lorena is a gim and lead us on a great tour of the city, and Sote, the house keeper, is an sweetheart and an amazing cook who we hired to fix us breakfast every morning. Also, Manuel, our driver, took us on several day trips as well as picked us up and delivered us to the airport without a hitch. Finally, Maria is one of the most patient and helpful property owner. Thank you all for a trip we will always remember. My main complaint is about the very squeaky wood floors, but we'd squeak, too, if we were 200 years old.
Beautiful and perfect location!
This was the perfect house for us, in the perfect location. We were looking to stay in an authentic colonial home and that is exactly what we got. The location on Plaza de San Fernando was a great central location, and we were treated to nightly seranades by the strolling troubadours! As an extra unexpected treat, we watched the Passion of the Christ procession directly from the French doors that open on to the plaza. Maria, Lorena, and Osvaldo went beyond themselves to make sure we were comfortable. We are already plotting our return!
The most beautiful place I have ever stayed and I’ve stayed in many beautiful places
This house is huge. It is an artists delight. It feels very historic with many little patios, roof top garden, small balconies, little passageways, huge windows, very large rooms, exquisite views, high end furniture, and wonderful amenities. Plants are everywhere lending the sense of being in a well preserved hacienda. Don’t even get me started on Lorena and Maria who cheerfully and sensitively will help you with any problem or need. I cannot say enough.
Great location, fun house, great management
The title of our review says it all.
The owner (Maria) was helpful with our few questions, great about our reservation (which had to be changed from our original booking), and arranged for a great driver to take us from the Leon airport to the house (30 min). The property manager was knowledgeable, flexible (we arrived late on a Saturday night and she did not blink at the time or giving us a thorough house tour) and very nice. The woman who straightens up and waters the plants was efficient, unobtrusive and has a lot of energy to water all of the plants. We live in a cold climate and were jealous of the veritable jungle both inside and out.
The house itself is a funky layout combining 150-year old structure with updates and modern amenities. Once we figured-out where things were/how they connected it made sense. Very varied spaces. More comfy chairs in the living room would have made it a better place to "lounge around" but the view of the plaza (especially with doors open) made it a fun space. For two people we had plenty of space. The main patio/deck might have been the best feature - to sit, drink a beer, and mostly watch the plaza and town.
Not sure what to respond to the previous reviews but seems worth commenting on the two most noted points. For a central location overlooking a principal Mexican plaza the noise is to be expected and it was part of the culture and color of the place - and we liked it. Yep, lots of steps but they were never a problem.
i loved the roof deck and living-room the most. The view of the plaza below was loverly..
Had a great time in Guanajuato and liked that the house was within walking distance to everything. The owner Maria is very helpful, as is Lorena, the manager, who gives fantastic tours !
Absolutely wonderful place!
Great place to stay, excellent location- very central to all of Guanajuato. It is in a lively plaza full of restaurants, small stores and an amazing bakery- we stopped there every day for pastries- another incentive to walk & walk & walk! While the plaza is a great place to be, guests who want a quiet stay throughout the day may find that to be a challenge- there's lots of activity throughout the day & the nearby restaurants are. The upstairs terrace is an absolute oasis for all the senses! The house has plenty of room- there was only 2 of us but we could have brought 4 more people & we would have been comfortable. When we go back to Guanajuato, we will rent this house again- it is a gem- beautiful inside & out and within walking distance of everywhere- galleries, restaurants, Juarez theater, the central market & museums. Loved it!
Other Activities: House located in the heart of downtown Guanajuato within walking distance of the major cultural venues, historic monuments, touristic attractions.
