About the property

Apartment, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Our Lucarne Suite is located on the third floor (2eme étage) and accessed via two flights of stone stairs in the medieval tower. This suite fronts on Grande Rue and has a private terrace at the top of the tower with a wonderful view of the church and the surrounding area. The suite (110 square meters) has central air-conditioning and heating with separately controlled units in each room. It has two bedrooms with two bathrooms. The upper bedroom has a queen size two metre bed; and the other on the main floor has two metre twin beds.

It is nestled in a complex of medieval buildings. The suite is located within the remnants of the ancient walls of the medieval town centre next to the magnificent 12th century Clunic priory church of Notre Dame which was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1998. It has an excellent view of the church and the “Parc des Bénédictins”.

We have made every effort to maintain the antiquity of this charming two bedroom unit during renovation. In the same complex we also have two other units for rent (VRBO #200695), please ask us for further information. Modern bathrooms, kitchen and living room make the unit an ideal place to relax while exploring the region. The apartment is rented on a weekly basis or a three night minimum stay.

While staying with us you will be a short walk to several bakeries, butcher shops, bars, restaurants and other amenities all within the medieval town centre. In addition to wine tasting and sightseeing you can spend your days walking or cycling the many trails in the area the best of which run along the Canal Lateral à La Loire. There is also the opportunity to travel down the Loire by kayak or canoe.

La Charité-sur-Loire is an hour and 45 minutes south of Paris. The owners live a two minute walk from the unit and are always on hand to answer any of your questions or if you need help with your French. Please see our website for more information of activities in the area.

About Byron and Kelly Harker

Hello, we are Byron and Kelly Harker from Vancouver on the West Coast of Canada. We have had the opportunity to travel widely over the years, and have always enjoyed returning to France. In 2003 we decided to sell our home in Vancouver and move to France. We discovered the delightful town of La Charité-sur-Loire in Burgundy and immediately fell in love with the town and the area. In 2004 we opened the first of our vacation rentals and currently have five such rentals in the centre of this medieval town. We enjoy the many festivals in town and the area throughout the year. We are close enough to Paris to 'pop up' for the day. We enjoy sharing our love of the area with our guests from all over the world.

What makes this apartment unique

La Charité-sur-Loire is south of the rain and north of the heat and as a result has very enjoyable weather. Our vacation rentals are in the centre of town and you are able to walk out your front door and enjoy the many bakeries, cafes, restaurants and boutiques. The Loire River is two blocks away and it has lovely beaches and walking paths along the riverbank. There is canoeing and kayaking on the river. We are close the wine areas of Sancerre and Pouilly-sur-Loire where you can meet the wine makers and enjoy tasting their wonderful wines. The castles of the Loire Valley are a two hour drive from us and make an enjoyable day trip. La Charité-sur-Loire is becoming an art, book and music cultural centre and as such there are many festivals throughout the year.

Lovely Large Suite in a Picturesque Town

  • 5 of 5

First, let me make note of our complete appreciation for Byron and Kelly as hosts. They were so helpful, and so gracious, and their help made our trip significantly better. Every time we had a question, they responded very quickly. Their suggestions for things to do in the area were tailored to our needs (we were traveling with children), and each one was spot on. Let me say - if they say something should not be missed, do not miss it! Byron took us on a tour of the town, to show us the historical highlights, and it is very clear they love the town. I will also note that they both speak English, which was a big help.

The apartment is as described, quite large. We had five people staying in it, and everybody was quite comfortable. It is at the top of several flights of stairs, and the master bedroom is up another flight of stairs. I was a little concerned at the beginning of the week, as the staircase is a spiral one and old stone (but very good condition), but by the end of the week we were going up and down the stairs without hesitation.

We loved the apartment, it was exactly what we were looking for. It is an older building, but we found it it be exceptionally clean, and very comfortable. It had all the amenities required, including air conditioning. It was in the centre of town, which made everything an easy walk away. The market on Saturday was fantastic, and we found many great places to eat nearby. Oddly - the only place for coffee in the morning was the bar, but the coffee was quite good there. Try the chocolate shop beside the old church, it was excellent.

A Great Place in a Great Location

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in La Charite Sur Loire. Our apartment was warm, open, and had all one needs to self cater. The location in the centre of the town is excellent for shopping, sightseeing, and eating out. Our hosts, Kelly and Byron, were wonderful. They were always available if we had a problem and graciously shared their time with us. Byron's tour of and commentary on the sights in La Charite were very informative and excellent in the insights to local history. We will go back again.

Beautiful historic property!

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful historic property oozes charm and atmosphere, but has all the mod cons anyone could want. The hosts, Kelly & Byron, are warm, welcoming and very knowledgeable about their community, the shopping, culture, recreation and (especially) the viticulture of the area. We truly enjoyed our all-too-short stay in their vacation flat and will definitely return!

Absolute perfect

  • 5 of 5

It was absolutely fantastic to stay at Kelly's and Byrons apartment. They were very helpful and even a late arrival at 11pm was not a problem. The apartment is fantastic. But the best it the roof top terrace. If I will come again to la Charite I will definitely stay there again. Thank you Kelly and Byron for great days.

What a treasure!

  • 5 of 5

Two of us spent 3 nights in this gorgeous apartment as we were visiting La Charite for work. Byron and Kelly could not have been more helpful- from meeting us at the train station on arrival to taking us back at the end of our stay- laden with work documents but also much of the fine produce to be bought locally. The apartment is very spacious and well equipped, with plentiful supplies of fluffy towels in the well appointed bathrooms. The tower was a real treat, giving spectacular views of the church and the town and is well worth the (slightly) precarious climb! As the apartment is vey conveniently located in the main street everything is close at hand in this extremely beautiful and interesting town. Kelly's recommendation to visit the master chocolatier, whose shop is built into the priory walls- was much appreciated as I have never tasted such heavenly chocolates, marshmallows and jellied fruits. I'm amazed any of them made it home as gifts! I would thoroughly recommend staying here and can't wait to return- for both work and pleasure!
