Enjoy the Tradewinds flowing through this Island Style house. Just a few steps from WaiOpae's famous snorkeling ponds, this home offers lovely furnishings and comfort in this unique coast-side setting.
The house is designed to accommodate couples or a small family with spacious lanais extending the living areas. The bedrooms include a comfortable king and queen beds plus a queen size 'pun-ea' (daybed) on the lanai for outdoor naps or sleeping. In addition to the 2 full baths there is a refreshing outdoor shower.
The kitchen is fully stocked for simple meals or elaborate gourmet dining. Also provided is satellite TV (with a selection of DVD movies) and wireless internet for your convenience.
This pristine setting on Hawaii's East side is close to Volcanoes Nationa Park, the quaint and historic towns of Hilo and Pahoa, the geothermal Ahalanui warm pond, as well as many colorful sites along the beautiful "Red Road". Located a few miles from Pahoa's restaurants and shops or another 1/2 hour to Hilo's bayfront parks, golf courses, museums and farmers market.
Enjoy swimming, snorkeling, endless walks or explore miles of coastline on foot, bicycle or car. Experience unspoiled Old Hawaii along the Red Road. Or visit nearby Volcano National Park and (if Pele shows off) see lava flowing into sea viewed by air (helicopter), land (hike in) or by lava boat. This is a 'Bucket List' experience!
We are pleased to share our vacation home with visitors to WaiOpae. We make this our home for a few months each year to enjoy the unspoiled LAST BEST PLACE in Hawaii. Now retired we enjoy the contrast between our home near Big Sky, Montana and the lush, tropical setting of Wai Opae by the sea. Both homes allow us to live connected with the natural environment and play hard.
Donna LaHue purchased this house in 2010
After many years visiting the Big Island we finally found just the right spot to build our island getaway. Wai Opae is a unique place; off the beaten path in a friendly community of year round residents and visitors. Situated on the edge of the beautiful marine preserve, we enjoy fabulous snorkeling every day!!
Wai Opae is all about restoring the spirit, body and soul. There is something about living (or vacationing) on the edge of this island, in the shadow of an active volcano, that keeps us in touch with Hawaii as the ancients knew and loved it. Located in rural Puna district Wai Opae is a great starting point for adventures around the island!
Here is the review I wrote:
A wonderful place to relax and reconnect with nature. The accommodation was in a great shape and clean.
Tide pools were 3 minutes, walking distance, from the house. They were filled with sea-life, always calm, and safe for swimming (during any weather). Green, lush, colorful rain forest.
The town (Pahoa) offers everything a traveler might needed (food, souvenirs, entertainment, gas, etc.)
ADVICE: Please don't leave anything valuable in your vehicle (rent car) while parking anywhere by road . Unfortunately, even paradise is occupied by individuals who will 'make living' by stealing. That's the world we live in.
Thank you Mitzi for a warm welcome, and thank you Donna for making this trip easy to book and find.
We have a ton of wonderful memories!!!

We came in March and the weather was perfect, around 70 at night and 80 during the day (and no mosquitos!). The owner was easy to reach and very accommodating. This is the quiet side of the Big Island. Do not expect nightlife, other than the wonderful sounds of the animals in the rain forest. It is very dark at night and the stars are spectacular. It is difficult to find this house at night, thank God for GPS. We made several day trips; waterfalls, rugged lava coastline, black sand beach (Punalu'u, two-hour drive but totally worth it), tropical botanical gardens and a helicopter ride over the volcano and flowing lava (Blue Hawaiian out of Hilo). Bring your snorkel gear because the tide pools are fantastic. Make sure you have a good pair of water shoes because getting out to the deeper pools requires a walk over incredibly rough lava rocks. We took folding chairs and spent several afternoons. Bring the sunscreen. Great place to get away, restore and recharge.
Close to warm ponds. Low traffic area. Very quiet community. Great for the kids. We will be back.
My husband, 3 year old daughter and I had a fantastic 4 night stay at this beautiful house. We loved the decor, beautiful kitchen, eating our meals on the lanai and taking advantage of of snorkeling in the beautiful ocean pools. We ended every day with a soak in the warm pool only a short drive away. We are so glad we chose this home and we hope to be back in the near future. Mahalo!
The house is very beautiful.
Most of the time we are sleeping in the outdoor Puena. We have seen so many stars as never before, its a dream. We heard the nightbirds and sometimes the feral pig. It's very nice.
We love this house and we hope to come again.
Perfect for two couples! Often you find that one room has twin beds; here there was a king (perfect for one 6'11" guest) and queen. Two baths. Plus a bonus bed on the back deck for outdoor sleepers. We loved the front deck for dining, games, conversation. Kitchen was useful with cooking utensils and appliances; the leftover condiments meant we could easily make yummy meals. The property was clean and tastefully furnished. We appreciated the TV, internet, and music. Just a few minute walk from the tide pools or otherwise located in a quiet neighborhood. Be prepared to drive however; peace and quiet comes with a price of a 30 min drive to restaurants. We enjoyed this however; had stayed in the area previously. Thanks!
My Family and I loved our vacation , and staying in Donna And Jack Lahue's home made it even more special! Every room in this home was perfect!! We will be back !
Sunny Kapoho is located along the coast, 8 miles east of the quaint town of Pahoa. This stylish new vacation home is steps away from the water at Wai Opae Marine Preserve offering visitors fabulous snorkeling. This is the perfect location to stage daytrips around East Hawaii including the Volcano Visitor and Art Center. Or explore ancient Hawaiian sites along the 'Red Road' south to Kalapana. On the way, relax at Ahalanui Park's warm pond, natural thermally heated pool overlooking the rugged coastline. Or stretch your body and mind at Kalani Honua Cultural Center and Retreat. Finally, a Must-Experience: the ongoing creation of our island; lava flowing into sea may be viewed by air, by land or by sea.
Other Activities: lava viewing
Golf: Four courses within an hour of Wai Opae.
