About Donna LaHue
We are pleased to share our vacation home with visitors to WaiOpae. We make this our home for a few months each year to enjoy the unspoiled LAST BEST PLACE in Hawaii. Now retired we enjoy the contrast between our home near Big Sky, Montana and the lush, tropical setting of Wai Opae by the sea. Both homes allow us to live connected with the natural environment and play hard.
Donna LaHue purchased this House in 2010
Why Donna LaHue chose Kapoho
After many years visiting the Big Island we finally found just the right spot to build our island getaway. Wai Opae is a unique place; off the beaten path in a friendly community of year round residents and visitors. Situated on the edge of the beautiful marine preserve, we enjoy fabulous snorkeling every day!!
What makes this House unique
Wai Opae is all about restoring the spirit, body and soul. There is something about living (or vacationing) on the edge of this island, in the shadow of an active volcano, that keeps us in touch with Hawaii as the ancients knew and loved it. Located in rural Puna district Wai Opae is a great starting point for adventures around the island!

Dream vacation on the tropical side of Big Island
Beautiful home- comfortable and tastefully decorated. Minutes from the tidepools where we, first time snorkelers, experienced the magic of the Hawaiian reef fish and coral.
The house has all amenities- well stocked kitchen, laundry, plenty of linen and towels and stuff for the beach.
We drove to the farmers market and Island stores and food trucks in Pahoa when needed but were glad to back " at home" in the lush green surroundings to spend lazy, relaxing days.
While in Kapoho, we took the lava boat tour( amazing experience ); visited the Volcanoes National Park and the Black sands beach and day trip to Hilo.
Wonderful vacation in a beautiful home.
Thanks again Donna!
Thank you. So glad you enjoyed the house and experienced all the best of Puna!
Perfect location and accomodations!
A perfect location on the relaxing east side of the Big Island! The house provides a great base for exploring the area and provides all the comforts of home one could want. The living area on the second floor catches the cooler trade winds in what can be a rather warm and humid location in the evenings. And yes, the bin in the covered parking area has a varied collection of beach gear if you forgot anything. It is next to the Wai O’pae tide pools, a magnet for both experienced snorkelers and those sampling these magic waters for the first time. For a most unusual swim, visit the nearby large Ahalanni geothermal pool. Lots to see and enjoy on the narrow scenic 'Red Road' along the coast. Make sure to stop at the MacKenzie State Recreation area to walk along the lava cliffs at the edge of the Ironwood grove. Easy access to both sides of the current lava flows-- informal explorations on the east side of the flows or the varied experiences in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. In the Pahoa shopping center, Pahoa Fresh Fish has the best truly fresh fish and chips you will find among all the Hawaiian islands! If you are in Hilo at meal time, be sure to stop by Ken's House of Pancakes and enjoy along with the locals great service from a varied menu.
Thank you for your great review! You covered everything! We're delighted that you got out to see and do all that East Hawaii has to offer....And still relaxed and snorkeled and ate at Ken's like a local. We hope you will return. Donna and Jack
Great access to snorkeling!
We loved staying so close to Wai O’pae tide pools. The house met all our expectations.
So nice to be away from the crowds on the west side of the island! We swam in a huge volcano heated swimming pool (less than 5 min drive) every day. Some of us snorkeled every day (gorgeous fish in the tide pools a short walk away). The house worked perfectly for a couple with two grown daughters. The extra bedroom on a second lanai gave each girl her own space. The whole house was spacious, well appointed and very clean. A vacation rental that provides enough TP, shampoo, DW soap and laundry soap for the entire week deserves an A+ in my book! Loads of beach towels, swim shoes and snorkel equipment for the whole family. Ceiling fans in every room enable sleeping in the high humidity. We took day trips to the volcano, Lyman Museum and the exceptional Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens.
Lovely and relaxing
We really enjoyed our stay here! It is definitely off the beaten path and you'll need a car if you want to enjoy other activities on the island but the snorkeling was quite good in the tide pools (reef shoes are essential!). We would remove Isaac Hale and MacKenzie Park from your recommended list as we found these parks quite unfriendly and uncomfortable.
great location and house
The tide pools are the best and the walk to them from this home is easy. Great place to stay.
Sunny Kapoho is located along the coast, 8 miles east of the quaint town of Pahoa. This stylish new vacation home is steps away from the water at Wai Opae Marine Preserve offering visitors fabulous snorkeling. This is the perfect location to stage daytrips around East Hawaii including the Volcano Visitor and Art Center. Or explore ancient Hawaiian sites along the 'Red Road' south to Kalapana. On the way, relax at Ahalanui Park's warm pond, natural thermally heated pool overlooking the rugged coastline. Or stretch your body and mind at Kalani Honua Cultural Center and Retreat. Finally, a Must-Experience: the ongoing creation of our island; lava flowing into sea may be viewed by air, by land or by sea.
Other Activities: lava viewing, hiking or biking,
Golf: Four courses within an hour of Wai Opae.
