Martha's Vineyard has been an important part of my family since my grandmother began coming as a girl. She, my father and I all spent our honeymoons on the island. I learned to row on Crystal Lake, worked summer jobs in Oak Bluffs, and met my husband here. Although we call Narragansett, RI, home, this is where our heart is!
Kate Meleney purchased this cottage in 1950
This dear cottage was purchased by my grandfather in 1950, probably a decade or more after it was moved to its Crystal Lake site from the Vineyard Methodist Campgrounds. It was originally a Hodgson Portable Camp House, the first 'prefab' cottage made in the US, consisting of three 12'x6' sections that made up the kitchen, small bedroom and bathroom. It still has the wing nuts (visible in the kitchen), that held everything together! When it was moved, the front room was added. If you look closely, you'll see the original clapboard siding and two windows, which are now covered.
I inherited this property in 2008, and in 2009 began a total renovation. We buttoned it up against the elements, added heating, radiant heat in two of the floors, totally redid the kitchen, bathroom, and painted inside and out.
Outside, we opened up the view to the lake and Vineyard Sound, created more lawn and have planted shrubs and flowers.
Not only is the cottage charming, but the setting is one of the best on the Island.
Whenever someone comes to make a delivery or pay a visit, the first comment is 'I never new this was here!' Our cottage is private, secluded from the hustle and bustle, but right on the lake and with a view of all the comings and goings in Vineyard Haven Harbor. West Chop is in the distance and on clear days, you can see the Cape. You feel like you have a spyglass on the world in your own private setting.
Entertainment during cocktail hour includes the daily sailing of the Alabama, the square rigger out of Vineyard Haven Harbor. Some days it is followed by the Shenandoah. As the day gives way to evening, our sunsets are jawdropping. Whether enjoyed on the deck or inside the living room with a panoramic view from the windows, this is the perfect setting for a Vineyard escape.
This well-appointed, private cottage is situated on a small lake that separates the property from Vineyard Sound. Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs are easily accessible and we explored each on bicycle. Mornings and evenings on the deck were serene, colored by nature and in the company of several species of birds who asserted gentle ownership of the property. Cottage decor is tastefully retro themed and all facilities are up-to-date. While the outdoor shower is a pleasant communing with nature, the indoor shower is an absolute treat. We cooked most meals at the cottage and the kitchen provided each and every piece of equipment a cook could hope for. Overall, this property is serene, private, with beautiful water views, close to town, small but very cozy, clean and comfortable. A gem!

We cooked most of our evening meals at the cottage in the well-stocked, sensible kitchen. This cottage is every bit as charming as the pictures. The yard is huge and surrounded by forest on three sides, giving you complete privacy. I spent hours on the deck, reading and watching the sailboats go by.
I used the handy bus service to get around the island, there is a bus stop 2 or 3 blocks from the house.
It was fun to explore the towns early in the day, eat lunch out and pick up something for dinner at the grocery store. The house has everything you need for cooking. In the evening I walked to town and back via the harbor road, enjoying the beautiful sunsets.
Kate takes good care of her guests. My flight arrived in the evening and she graciously offered to get some groceries for me since I wouldn't have time to shop.
You can't go wrong with this property for your vacation.
It felt cozy and safe for me as a single person and would be ideal for a couple's getaway.
You never know what to expect when you arrive at a cottage away from home. The petite cottage was a home away from home. Everything i needed was there. The waterview was spectacular and changing day to day, depending on the weather. Mother nature provided some guests along the way . Turtles, geese, butterflies, ducks, deer, and birds were all around the lake and the cottage.
Charming birdhouses can be found as you look around the property, hidden in the trees, around a corner, or among the beautiful patches of flower. When you come to the cottage, give yourself time to look around and enjoy your surroundings. I have recommended it to friends for next year.
We spend the most delightful 3 days at the cottage the past weekend. The seclusion and the view are priceless. Even though we were in Martha's Vinyard, we struggled to peel ourselves off the deck! The little rabbit, ducks, geese, deer, birds in the numerous bird houses scattered around the property -- all added to the charm. My husband is convinced that he even heard the hoots of an owl. I loved the sun-room effect of the living/masterbedroom area. We fell asleep looking at the stars and woke up to the bright sun of the morning. The sunsets were of fairytale dreams, we spend hours looking at the cottage across the lake as the sun set on both nights. I loved the kitchen, anything I needed was there in this tiny little kitchen carefully coordinated and tucked away. I felt like putting on high heels and red lipstick, throw on an apron and cook for the family Mad Men-style. We will definitely come back soon.
This cottage exceeded expectations. It is small, but there is actually plenty of room and the deck overlooking the ocean makes it feel spacious. The view is fabulous and the location is right in between "downtown" Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven, so an easy drive to either destination. Easy walk to East Chop lighthouse. The owner is lovely and extremely helpful. She answered email questions quickly and provides a notebook in the cottage with all kinds of information a visitor might need. She obviously cares that you enjoy your stay. The talking microwave and the mint green refrigerator are a hoot!! Beautiful, vintage cottage in excellent condition.

Our waterfront cottage is located on Crystal Lake, with views of Vineyard Haven Harbor, West Chop, and Vineyard Sound.
