About The Owner

The owner, Bruce, was a factory worker, logger, newspaper reporter, PR flunkie, and unpublished fiction writer before he discovered computers and lost all interest in reality. He spent 12 years in a computer fog, but gave it all up to move to the Silver City area in 1999. He is now in recovery, but does find time to manage an office building and a few other business projects in town.

The Owner purchased this house in 1999

Why The Owner chose Silver City

Bruce lived in this beautiful house for five years before turning it into a vacation rental. If you don't book it, he probably will. It's a sacred place that he likes to share with others.

What makes this house unique

Beyond us are only a couple of tiny communities and a hundred miles of wilderness. In this secluded environment, you can hear the diverse sounds of many different varieties of birds, view the Milky Way amidst the dark, starry night skies, watch breath-taking sunsets right from the living room, and hike many nearby trails all the while reconnecting with the natural world AND your own inner landscape.

Guestbook comments from the manager

well-designed, quiet home

  • 5 of 5

We liked the location in a canyon off NM15 a few miles north of Pinos Altos. The house is isolated and very quiet. The design is environmentally conscious; it has no AC but lots of vents, and the water is heated by solar panels with butane as a back-up. Rugs, modern art, and decorations give the house a pleasant feel. The living room is wide and open, and the porches allow you to spend much time outside.

Beautiful, well appointed home

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and wished we would have had more time. The home is spacious and beautifully appointed with thoughtful (not kitschy) Southwest-style decor. Lots of windows and lights for viewing the outdoors. Quiet, starry night skies. Hiking opportunities (but you must be willing climb over boulders). Watch for snakes in the summer! I got rattled at by a Banded Rocky Rattler. I set up a temporary hummingbird feeder and were pleased to see many Rufous hummers and a Magnificent Hummingbird (my first time!) A very quiet, beautiful corner of New Mexico that is far less traversed than the Santa Fe/Taos area. Highly recommend. Hope to be back!

Lovely Place

  • 5 of 5

The full beauty of this house is not clear until you arrive. A wonderful setting in a spectacular landscape. The house is comfortable, clean, and well designed with lots of nice touches. Plenty of great spots to sit outside and enjoy a drink. And fun little paths for kids to explore. Worth the journey.

A Peaceful Retreat in the Gila Wilderness

  • 5 of 5

The Agave Retreat is pressed up againt an impressive  rocky hillside  in the  Gila National Forest in Pinos Altos, a historically unique  area above Silver City. The two story house is exceptionally private with full views of the forest and rocky hills  from all of the windows in the upper level rooms. There are several outdoor spaces which provide panoramic views of the area and have sunset views out the front of the property  and the sunrise views from   the back, master suite and deck. The house is surrounded by tall ponderosa pines,  pinion trees, junipers  and agave cactus. The interior of the house is full of local art and beautiful middle eastern rugs as well as comfortable contemporary  furniture alongside  rustic antiques.  My husband  and I travel mostly in the Fall and Winter months which are usually cold and really appreciated the radient floor heating system  which kept the house evenly warm , with an added benefit of a fireplace for supplemental heating. The host provided all of the firewood needed during our stay. The leasing director -Maryam was especially helpful providing details of the house during our stay. This is the perfect place to escape the stress of every day life and explore the beauty and unique history of this region.

Solitude nestled in the spires

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for cramped quarters in an bustling urban setting, this is not for you. The photos don't do the interior or exterior justice. The house is built into the rugged landscape, with trails and a river on the property, bordering National Forest. We had snow during our stay, which only made the experience better.

Owner's Response: Glad your stay at the house made your holiday special! The seasonal springs and the nearby creek were spectacular this year with all the moisture we've had!
