Overview

About the property

2 BR, 1 Bath, with sleeping loft too - sleeps 6. Close to spa & paddle-boarding

Top rated Lake Austin spa is minutes away, rent paddle boards at the park down the road, or paddle our kayaks to the nature preserve across the lake and hike up to a waterfall. Our sand volleyball court is regulation size, we have a water trampoline, and diving board. But the serenity of this property may lead you to R&R and forgo all that activity - the screened in porch with antique iron day beds and desk beckons as a writer's retreat. Custom built with cedar flooring and rugged beams. Feels like middle of nowhere but great restaurants (sushi, Mexican, Steiner Ranch Steakhouse) are in the neighborhood, famous sunsets at the Oasis on Lake Travis 7 miles away, and 30 minutes from downtown Austin.

About Shelly Priebe

I grew up in a dreadfully nondescript area of Illinois (cornfields) but my parents wanted more than anything to live on the water and even though they earned a modest income as teachers they succeeded! In third grade we moved into a lakefront home in Central Illinois and it was THE gathering place for my friends as I grew up. They gave me the gift of prioritizing a water based lifestyle. Chuck and I bought this property when we got engaged in 1988 and our 4 children ages 22 to 9 relish the lifestyle I did as a child.

Shelly Priebe purchased this house in 1988

Why Shelly Priebe chose Austin

We fell in love with this ethereal part of Lake Austin and bought our home in 1988. It was 2 BR/1Bath with gold shag carpet and we were in heaven. Have added on to our home many times and we built the guest house in 2004 hoping to lure out of state grandparents. We failed at that but have loved being able to host many travelers, church youth retreat weekends, you name it!

What makes this house unique

Every piece of furniture hand picked over time from visits to the semi-annual Round Top antique fair except for the custom made cedar dining table with benches. Nothing matches but everything soothes in this eclectic and comfortable home. Want some activity? A sand volleyball court awaits. Or kayak across the lake and hike up to a waterfall.

owner and property fantastic

  • 5 of 5

My family had a wonderful time in this rental- very neat and decorated in a "woodsy" don't know if that's a word...style. Shelly and Chuck are super friendly and supportive and guided the process to make everything very easy. I will be back.

Thanks

Owner's Response: Appreciate the newly coined decorator term....welcome to "woodsy!" These guests gathered family for a staycation and rally embraced a weekend of fun. One funny story - When I walked outside of my house next door to the property and heard country tunes jamming I commented to my son "Oh, I love their music!" Lucky thing as they were sitting out of line of sight behind a tree not far way. Ha!

Beautiful and great fun!

The home was well kept, with great quality amenities. Super friendly hosts. Plenty of shade and sun to enjoy the river all day.

Owner's Response: Gosh thanks for the appreciative feedback. Our dock and grounds are shady most of the day which is soooo nice in hot Texas summers. But there are places to lounge in the sun, too. The water trampoline for example!

Exactly as advertised!

  • 4 of 5

My family had a wonderful get away. There was plenty of room in this relaxed tastefully decorated guest house to find your own space to chill. My children liked to read and play games on the screen porch. I liked the dock in morning with my coffee. Hubby liked the comfy couch in main area. Our small doggie liked exploring. The kitchen and dining table worked well for meals, we ate out at restaurants only twice. Once at the Oasis - at sunset....of course. ;) The water is cold but clean and clear. Just perfect in the heat with a Cypress giving some shade. Must not forget, we also had a lot of fun attempting to play badmitten on the beach volleyball court. You might want to bring yours too!

Simply perfect

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay here. Guest house is clean, comfortable and the location is ideal. The Priebe family are wonderful hosts. We were able to tie our boat to the dock, which made using it so convenient. Also, the kids loved the water trampoline. Can't wait to go back!

Beautiful view, but definitely not private

  • 3 of 5

The guest house and property were nice. The water trampoline and kayaks were fun and the view beautiful. The hosts were very hospitable but there were a few drawbacks. The hot tub and dock, where we hoped to spend much of our time is right in front of the owners house, which I hadn't anticipated or understood from the posting. Additionally there was consistently someone always around outside, which made the setting awkward at times. Definitely didn't help create the tranquil setting we were hoping for. Overall we had fun but spent our remaining afternoon and evening inside as to avoid the awkwardness.

Owner's Response: I am soooooo sorry that our guests didn't feel comfortable sharing with me in the moment how they felt when I asked. Our priority is always our guests experience. We live next door to our guest house and it makes this property special in ways that most love, but it's not for everyone. We truly consider our renters our "guests." That means we hep them with last minute requests (got a boat rented for someone within an hour yesterday) or are around for that pinch of whatever they need for what's cooking, or show and tell our iguana and bearded dragon to their kids. Our hot tub is on our deck and I make a big point of telling people that we truly are comfortable with them using it. The dock is not in front of our house - it is in front of the guest house and not in our view if we are inside. If we are outside we see our "neighbors" on the dock. And we MIGHT join them if space and tone of visit allows. Usually our lives are far too busy to enjoy the property in the same way our guests do. But last week with these visitors my 9 year old little boy loved playing with their kids (I made sure it was ok and sat outside on my deck to keep an eye so they would't feel responsible for him) And my older daughter sat on the dock with friends for a while. She is very aware and she can go to a neighborhood dock 2 doors down if it doesn't feel "right." She specifically asked if I thought it would be a problem. No one was around and when they were I asked and was told "no problem." I feel dreadful that our guests didn't feel comfortable with us living next door and intertwining with their visit, though we would not have if they had let us know their feelings when I checked in with them.
