Overview

About the property

2 BR, 1 Bath, with sleeping loft too - sleeps 6. Close to spa & paddle-boarding

Top rated Lake Austin spa is minutes away, rent paddle boards at the park down the road, or paddle our kayaks to the nature preserve across the lake and hike up to a waterfall. Our sand volleyball court is regulation size, we have a water trampoline, and diving board. But the serenity of this property may lead you to R&R and forgo all that activity - the screened in porch with antique iron day beds and desk beckons as a writer's retreat. Custom built with cedar flooring and rugged beams. Feels like middle of nowhere but great restaurants (sushi, Mexican, Steiner Ranch Steakhouse) are in the neighborhood, famous sunsets at the Oasis on Lake Travis 7 miles away, and 30 minutes from downtown Austin.

About Shelly Priebe

I grew up in a dreadfully nondescript area of Illinois (cornfields) but my parents wanted more than anything to live on the water and even though they earned a modest income as teachers they succeeded! In third grade we moved into a lakefront home in Central Illinois and it was THE gathering place for my friends as I grew up. They gave me the gift of prioritizing a water based lifestyle. Chuck and I bought this property when we got engaged in 1988 and our 4 children ages 22 to 9 relish the lifestyle I did as a child.

Shelly Priebe purchased this house in 1988

Why Shelly Priebe chose Austin

We fell in love with this ethereal part of Lake Austin and bought our home in 1988. It was 2 BR/1Bath with gold shag carpet and we were in heaven. Have added on to our home many times and we built the guest house in 2004 hoping to lure out of state grandparents. We failed at that but have loved being able to host many travelers, church youth retreat weekends, you name it!

What makes this house unique

Every piece of furniture hand picked over time from visits to the semi-annual Round Top antique fair except for the custom made cedar dining table with benches. Nothing matches but everything soothes in this eclectic and comfortable home. Want some activity? A sand volleyball court awaits. Or kayak across the lake and hike up to a waterfall.

Great Vacation Rental for the Family!

  • 5 of 5

The kids had a great time using all of the house's amenities including the water trampoline, kayaks, volleyball court, hanging out on the dock and the games in the house. The owners were very available for anything we needed. Really enjoyed our stay there!

Owner's Response: We love seeing families who enjoy the amenities with such zeal. The squeals of happy kids make our hearts happy.

Shelly and Chuck were very nice hosts. Although the weather wasn't great, they made our experience very enjoyable. The house was very neat and certainly enjoyed staying there. Very reasonable pricing and will be back!!

Hidden Gem

  • 5 of 5

This place is an outstanding get away that is off the beaten path. A beautiful setting tucked away on laid back Lake Austin. The owners could not have been nicer, or more accommodating to my family and our dog. My only regret is that, because of our schedule, we didn't get to spend more time there. But, we will be back.

Owner's Response: It was so nice having you visit, and we hope you'll be back. Your dog is the prettiest great dane I'd ever seen. I had heard the breed was sweet and Tito was the proof.

Wonderful Winter Vacation on the Lake

  • 4 of 5

Thank-you for making our stay so wonderful. The weather was great, warm and sunny, just right for playing on the trampoline and kayaking on the lake. The thunderstorm was a treat for the kids as they have not seen anything like that up in the frozen Pacific North-West. The house is charming and very inviting. We enjoyed our time there and it was sad to leave.

Owner's Response: The water trampoline and the kayaks are perpetual crowd pleasers. They put the "lake" in "lake vacation!" Hope the kids are ready now for a move to Austin.

Good and bad

  • 3 of 5

Positives:

location is right on the water

Owners are extremely nice and very close by

Lots of room inside

Decorated very well

Negatives:

Not very clean. Had to clean it myself but no vacuum or cleaning products available.

Lacking maintenance inside and out. Some things are safety issues

Couldn't use kayaks because they were filthy

Couldn't open windows because they were covered with spider webs, vines and dirt

Not what you expect for the price

Owner's Response: Leslie - Thanks for the compliments. In response to the negative: * cleanliness: I "walked" the house before you arrived and it passed my pretty rigorous standards. I'll email you offline to understand with more clarity what was missed so we can be sure and address. Especially any issues re safety? * kayaks - we keep them outside right by the lake. Our yard crew had cleared off all the leaves days before, but this time of year they continue to fall. I attached a photo of the kayaks that I took immediately upon reading your review. Darn - no place to attach those with this review, so I will post them as is with the rest of our property photos. I am not worried that others will see them on the front page of our listing. :) * windows: They are operable and I clean them from the inside. Vines - many people love the character they add and say so. Like you, I prefer them cut back a little - hard to please everyone, but I'll use your comments as ammo with Chuck. Like many of our guests he is a fan. Ha. In our many face to face and text communications during your stay I had absolutely no idea that you were disappointed or that you found anything lacking. Here are a few things you might have also mentioned: * My college daughter graciously watched your granddaughters for 3 hours so you could nap. She said they were darling but required her to be "on duty" 100%." She didn't ask for or expect payment - I guess a mention of that would have been nice though. :( * My high school daughter relieved her from her shift and set up my son's Christmas pinata and made sure they got to participate, and that they took home their share of the loot. * They seemed to like hanging out with us as they appeared at our door several times. They really liked coming in to see the iguana. * Was glad to lend foil, didn't know you lacked anything else. I'll post the kayak photo now. Your specific on cleaning will be helpful because we truly strive to impress our guests! Happy New Year! Shelly

Perfect location!

  • 5 of 5

We look forward to securing the 'Guest House" again, as do others in our extended family! The house proved to be the perfect location in proximity to family on Lakeland Dr. We were able to have them over to enjoy the dock and sit around the dining room table. Everyone was entertained and impressed with the eclectic decor. The beds are comfy, plenty of bathroom linen, books and games galore. The nighttime quiet was heavenly. Shelly was super easy to work with and conveniently located, although we never met face to face. The indoor space, as well as the outdoor space was was inviting, relaxed and even more than we hoped for! Thanks for your generous hospitality and please know there will be others to follow! Hopefully they will not catch the one that got away before we get back!

Owner's Response: Thank you for kind compliments. We loved having you, though it does feel odd that we never crossed paths face to face. I think I met everyone in your family and extended family BUT YOU. Maybe you were too busy cooking and taking care of everyone?! Come back again. Shelly & Chuck
