Overview

About the property

2 BR, 1 Bath, with sleeping loft too - sleeps 6. Close to spa & paddle-boarding

Top rated Lake Austin spa is minutes away, rent paddle boards at the park down the road, or paddle our kayaks to the nature preserve across the lake and hike up to a waterfall. Our sand volleyball court is regulation size, we have a water trampoline, and diving board. But the serenity of this property may lead you to R&R and forgo all that activity - the screened in porch with antique iron day beds and desk beckons as a writer's retreat. Custom built with cedar flooring and rugged beams. Feels like middle of nowhere but great restaurants (sushi, Mexican, Steiner Ranch Steakhouse) are in the neighborhood, famous sunsets at the Oasis on Lake Travis 7 miles away, and 30 minutes from downtown Austin.

About Shelly Priebe

I grew up in a dreadfully nondescript area of Illinois (cornfields) but my parents wanted more than anything to live on the water and even though they earned a modest income as teachers they succeeded! In third grade we moved into a lakefront home in Central Illinois and it was THE gathering place for my friends as I grew up. They gave me the gift of prioritizing a water based lifestyle. Chuck and I bought this property when we got engaged in 1988 and our 4 children ages 22 to 9 relish the lifestyle I did as a child.

Shelly Priebe purchased this house in 1988

Why Shelly Priebe chose Austin

We fell in love with this ethereal part of Lake Austin and bought our home in 1988. It was 2 BR/1Bath with gold shag carpet and we were in heaven. Have added on to our home many times and we built the guest house in 2004 hoping to lure out of state grandparents. We failed at that but have loved being able to host many travelers, church youth retreat weekends, you name it!

What makes this house unique

Every piece of furniture hand picked over time from visits to the semi-annual Round Top antique fair except for the custom made cedar dining table with benches. Nothing matches but everything soothes in this eclectic and comfortable home. Want some activity? A sand volleyball court awaits. Or kayak across the lake and hike up to a waterfall.

Green, beautiful, and just the ticket!

  • 5 of 5

Oh, my goodness. I can't rave about this house enough! Chuck and Shelly's property is absolutely gorgeous! Packed with options, we were able to feel at home and keep 5 kids entertained all weekend. We had easy access to the river, the kayaks, the volleyball court, and a propane grill. While the kids made use of the water trampoline and diving board, we got the chance to have coffee on the deck and sit and chat with Chuck, one of the owners. The cabin was perfect with comfy pillows, an airy and relaxing vibe, and a bunch of small little nuances you can appreciate. I am already hoping we can come back next spring!!

Owner's Response: We loved having this active family. They were on the lake from early morning until late at night. FYI the "river" is technically Lake Austin because it is damned on both ends and is constant level, but it has the serenity and appearance of a peacefully flowing river.

Shelly and Chuck exemplify southern hospitality!!

  • 5 of 5

This property was more than accommodating for 5 guys wanting a little R&R but I would also love to return with my wife and kids in the near future! Will highly recommend to anyone looking to enjoy more the natural side of Austin yet still be close enough to not miss out on what the city has to offer.

Owner's Response: These guests are welcome back anytime. I'd have to say it was reverse hospitality....with our guests dishing up and sharing some excellent cajun cookin'! Civilization and its amenities have come to us in the 28 years that we have lived here on Lake Austin. We are no longer "in the country." BUT once on property you'd never know that. It feels remote as ever.

A fun weekend playing on the lake

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful weekend at this lakefront house. The toys (water trampoline, kayaks, beach volleyball, hot tub) were so much fun and very well used. The house was clean, comfortable and contained everything you would need for a peaceful, idyllic and relaxing weekend. The owners, Shelly and Chuck went out of their way to make sure we had s great and memorable time. Loved the place.....will return!

Owner's Response: These guests seized all there was to offer, and we loved seeing them enjoy all the amenities. They proved that the water trampoline is not just for little kids. We look forward to their return.

Spring break

  • 4 of 5

the house was bigger than we expected from the pictures advertised. I will say the patio room is closed in with screens only which has holes the size of oranges allowing the outside critters to come in. None of my kids would sleep in the room in fear of the bugs. The house only has one very old TV. personally I like to watch TV in bed which none of the rooms has beds in them, not much of a big deal just would liked to had prepare myself. We thought the house had a hot tub which we found out is on the patio of the owners house and shared with them as well. Just seemed odd and made me not want to use it although my kids did.

Owner's Response: Yes there are two recent holes in the screens. Many say that porch room is their favorite - it is mine. We now have longer term friends/guests so will be getting in this month to do the little odd jobs. Sorry I didn't get to meet this visitor as I was gone during the entire stay, so surprised the shared hot tub felt "shared." But it is indeed, and we welcome our guests to use it anytime. Point well made that TV is not a priority in our guest house (or our house.) No plans though to put TVs in bedrooms anytime soon so take heed! And the old TV is not a big flatscreen - it is tucked away in an armoire because this owner doesn't likes televisions that aren't discreetly tucked away. Stay here if you are drawn to the beauty and serenity of the lake and want a break from media!

Great Vacation Rental for the Family!

  • 5 of 5

The kids had a great time using all of the house's amenities including the water trampoline, kayaks, volleyball court, hanging out on the dock and the games in the house. The owners were very available for anything we needed. Really enjoyed our stay there!

Shelly and Chuck were very nice hosts. Although the weather wasn't great, they made our experience very enjoyable. The house was very neat and certainly enjoyed staying there. Very reasonable pricing and will be back!!
