We both grew up near the beach and always dreamed of owning a house at the beach. We found Fort Morgan, only 2 hours away from our home (at the time), and fell in love with the area immediately! We built 'On Dune Pond' just for us, and now we are happy to share it with you & your family. Our daughter was nine years old when we started coming over for quiet weekends, and she loved her time on the sand, in the sea, and learning about the constellations. Now she shares this place with everyone through her photos. We know you will enjoy your vacation here!

Fort Morgan is the perfect place for a vacation! It is close to several large cities, but feels so far off the beaten path. We love our neighborhood of 'single-family only houses' - no busy commercial developments or condos for us! We didn't need or want elevators, pools or heavy, self-closing doors...open decks, large windows, comfy beds, big kitchen and a short stroll to the beach. That's what we wanted, and that's what we love about our place. You will too.
This area is rich in history, nature, and man-made interests. Fort Morgan was made famous in the Civil War battle for control of Mobile Bay. Union Admiral Farragut brought his fleet past the fort, wandered into a torpedo field, and famously cried 'damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead', ultimately winning the three week battle against Confederate Admiral Buchanan for control of the fort.
We are surrounded by the Gulf Islands National Seashore, and we regularly enjoy the many trails and protected beaches in the area. Don't miss an easy hike on Pine Beach Trail, ending at what we call 'Shell Beach' - the name says it all! Fishing in Mobile Bay or out in the gulf is easy, and there are lots of charter boats just minutes away at the Fort Morgan marina. So much to do...or so little - you decide!
This was probably the best vacation we ever had. First, when you walk into the house, it has a very beachy feel to it. I loved the decorations, especially the livingroom lamps. Everything worked like it was supposed to; and we were very happy about that after the experience we had with our last vacation. Unfortunately we came down during a week of all rain, but the rain wasn't usually an all day event, so we still got to do things. I would recommend exploring the USS Alabama battleship, and in Pensacola, Florida, the tallest lighthouse in the Gulf Coast that was featured on "Ghost Hunters," as being haunted...really cool if you're not afraid of heights, and don't mind climbing 177 spiral stairs to the top. If you do, there's Fort Morgan right down the road, which is also supposed to be haunted, and is listed as one of the scariest places in Alabama, and is on Youtube being explored by the Alabama Paranormal Research team. My kids loved both. We were planning on taking a trip to New Orleans, but since this happened to be the week of severe flooding, road closures, people drowning, and the Louisiana governor declaring a state of emergency, we decided to save that trip for another time. We had lots of fun gift shopping, and the Tangler outdoor mall was really cool. It has tons of stores and is set up very nicely. Tacky Jacks restaurant is right down the street, and we highly recommend it it. The waitress and staff were very friendly, and had we known it was there, we would have eaten there more often. (Unfortunately, we didn't find out till the day before we had to leave.)
It's a marina/restaurant, which was also disappointing for us because we had wanted to charter an ocean cruise, but we got to ride the ferry, so I guess the sunset cruise will have to wait until next time. While riding the ferry, three dolphins were swimming right next to us, and a seagull was flying overhead, the same speed as the boat for most of the way across Mobile Bay, (approximately 45 minutes).
Lastly; the air force kept flying their jets over the house and ocean. Talk about cool! The first time I heard one, I was in the bathroom, and he must have been really low because I thought a plane was getting ready to crash, and I came running out. Then the neighbor across the street said they practice here, and that happens a lot, so we must have stood outside for hours watching them fly overhead, circle around, and fly overhead again. This happened many times during our stay.A+
On Dune Pond is the perfect beach retreat! The property is extremely well maintained, looks fresh inside and out; great attention to detail in decor, furnishing and a fully equipped kitchen. The view from both decks was amazing. Only suggestion we have is to put a television in the master bedroom for those of us that go to sleep with the tv on. Overall, a great experience. Sue Willoughby was a delight to rent from and very prompt in issuing deposit refund.
We loved On Dune Pond so very much! The house was bright and colorful, spotless, and fully equipped with everything we needed for a week in paradise. The beds were comfortable, and the decor was spot on. Also, the media room is perfect of those rainy days or lazy evenings, has Netflix and DriecTv along with several movies and books. To sum it up, we have found our beach getaway spot and can't imagine going anywhere else.
What an excellent place to stay. Clean, comfortable, and nicely equipped. It is like walking into your own house on the beach, they truly have thought of everything you need or might need! This was our first time and we hope to return again next year, and stay longer. Great place!!
This is our second time returning to 'On Dune Pond". It is absolutely a delight to stay at this wonderful beach house. It is steps away from the beach and you can sit on either of the two decks and have a wonderful view of the gulf. The house is clean, and so comfortable! Each room is decorated so tastefully. Every room offers
all you need for a great vacation. . a wonderful laundry room, a kitchen supplied with everything you need,
three great bedrooms with very comfortable beds and nice closet space, a media room with TV, videos, games and books too. We loved our time there and hope to return. A great home away from home.
We have returned again to the Perfect Beach Home. Once again our hosts made our stay enjoyable, restful and comfortable. We love how beautifully decorated it is but mostly so clean and well maintained. Couldn't ask for more except if it was right on the beach. We hope to be able to come again and again...it feels like home.
Ft. Morgan sits a spit of land at the mouth of Mobile Bay. From our house you have great views of both the Gulf of Mexico to the south and Mobile Bay to the north. You can also view the Mobile shipping channel - interesting to those of us who enjoy something unique. There is lots of history available if you visit the two Civil War-era forts that guard the mouth of the Bay. A trip across the Bay to Dauphin Island to visit Fort Gaines as well as the SeaLab is a fun trip - take the Mobile Bay Ferry, with or without your car.
