The Goodenough Family purchased this cottage in 1939
Margaret and Daniel Goodenough were living in Detroit, MI when they purchased this land on Lake Huron. The Brooks family had recently had to sell an 1875 cottage on Mackinac Island, MI. Many of the furnishings were brought over to the new construction in Grand Bend. Dan Goodenough wanted the living room to feel like a sun porch -- big windows with nothing to block the light and view of the lake -- and the builders constructed it so. At the time only a few other small cabins existed on either side. Now the original owners have passed on and the surroundings of their cottage have changed, but the peace and natural surroundings of the property remain.
Four generations of Goodenoughs have grown up coming to the Grand Bend cottage from various parts of the US and Canada every summer. We love the quiet refuge that takes us back in time, and the breath-taking natural surroundings of birch and cedar trees, dune grass, expansive beach, and the ever-changing moods of the lake itself.
Grand Bend is a small but popular beach town with a main strip with ice cream shops, restaurants, bars, miniature golf, surf shops, and a large new playground and splash park. Grand Bend hosts an annual beach volleyball tournament and car show. Fine theatre: Stratford Festival is 55 minutes away and Huron County Playhouse 7 minutes away.
