About The Goodenough Family

The Goodenough Family currently resides in various parts of the US and Canada, including Ann Arbor, MI; Guelph, ON; Philadelphia, PA; and Sebastopol, CA. Our cottage in Grand Bend is the one reunion spot that brings us all together.

The Goodenough Family purchased this cottage in 1939

Why The Goodenough Family chose Ontario

Margaret and Daniel Goodenough were living in Detroit, MI when they purchased this land on Lake Huron. The Brooks family had recently had to sell an 1875 cottage on Mackinac Island, MI. Many of the furnishings were brought over to the new construction in Grand Bend. Dan Goodenough wanted the living room to feel like a sun porch -- big windows with nothing to block the light and view of the lake -- and the builders constructed it so. At the time only a few other small cabins existed on either side. Now the original owners have passed on and the surroundings of their cottage have changed, but the peace and natural surroundings of the property remain.

What makes this cottage unique

Four generations of Goodenoughs have grown up coming to the Grand Bend cottage from various parts of the US and Canada every summer. We love the quiet refuge that takes us back in time, and the breath-taking natural surroundings of birch and cedar trees, dune grass, expansive beach, and the ever-changing moods of the lake itself.
