About Wanda Pinkham

I went to school here in Steuben Me. I Joined the Marines after High School and retired in 2002. I currently live in Connecticut with my family.

Close family friends (The Pinkham's) who live in the area manage our cottage. Please e-mail our contact person, Wanda, for more information.

Why Wanda Pinkham chose Downeast and Acadia

This property has been in my family for 3 generations. I lobster fished right out front when I was going through school. I know all the locals in the area. These people work hard on the water and you should come watch. It is so relaxing to see the boats out hauling traps.

What makes this cottage unique

What really makes me love this home is having the windows cracked at night. Listen to the waves hitting the shore with the peepers in the back ground. Oh, yea. then there is good ol' Petit Manan light house fog horn off in the distance. Man, that is it, you're out for a great night sleep.

Clean, comfortable and just what we needed!

  • 5 of 5

We planned a last minute trip to Maine and wanted to try something different. We normally stay in Southern Maine, but wanted to venture further north this time. We found Who New Cottage through Home Away, and I'm so glad we did!

I am very picky about lodging, but I will say - this cottage is immaculate and has been completely remodeled with modern comforts and conveniences. From the moment I stepped inside I loved it, and I was very impressed! With permission, my husband and I brought our small dog and we all felt right at home. There is a loft bedroom that is accessible by a spiral staircase (so pretty!). That would be perfect for kids! We didn't need the additional space, but the downstairs was open and very roomy for us. I am a poor sleeper, but the bed was so comfortable and I slept all night long, every night! I was amazed. Every morning, we sat on the porch in the rocking chairs and had our coffee. It was perfect. The rest of the home's furniture was comfortable, and believe it or not, I actually went out and bought the exact same chairs for my living room after returning home! Wanda (the property manager) was extremely responsive to any questions we had about the local area or things to do. You should know, this property is not located close to town or conveniences (it's roughly a 15 minute ride to the grocery store), but I would still highly recommend this rental to anyone looking for a beautiful view and a nice play to stay and relax. The only downside was the spotty WiFi, but the property owner was working on getting that fixed, so I'm sure it will be resolved. And honestly, it wasn't a terrible thing for us to be "unplugged" a little bit. We still had television and were able to make calls home to family from the landline.

We've been coming to Maine for vacation for over 35 years and I will admit, this vacation by far was one of the best vacation we've had in Maine in a long time. I didn't want to leave and I actually cried a little bit on our last day as we were pulling away. I loved this cottage and I can't wait to go back. Please give Who New a try!

Fantastic Place

  • 4 of 5

This property is great! The cottage is extremely clean and well-maintained, and as others have noted fully stocked with all the necessary amenities. The location is remote, you will need to drive a lot to get around, but once you are on the property the location is ideal. The back yard leading down to the shore is absolutely beautiful. For those interested in stargazing, the sky right outside the cottage on a clear night is almost completely dark and offers outstanding views of the Milky Way. You can get provisions in Millbridge, about a 20 minute drive, or more options in Ellsworth, about a 45 minute drive. Wanda the property manager is very engaged and proactive in facilitating your stay, answering questions, etc. Highly recommended all around.

Fantastic Retreat for Recharging

  • 5 of 5

This was exactly what we needed - no traffic, no crowds, but plenty to do visiting Acadia, wandering around the coastal towns, blueberry picking, enjoying fresh seafood dinners in the backyard, and watching the lobster boats come in.

The cottage is an open floorplan, that if you have kids, perfect for playing inside if you should get that occasional rainy day in our New England summers. The kitchen had everything you would need if you love cooking in. But our favorite place, even in the morning before the sun burned through the coastal overcast, was the backyard. You are literally on the water of an inlet, so you don't have to worry about toys or kids being washed away! You can easily put in a kayak ( pay attention to rock formations visible at low tide!), walk along the infamous rocky beaches Maine is known for, or just sit with your favorite beverage and be hypnotized by the lapping water and changing landscape any time of the day. This is a place about nature and peacefulness, not about amusement parks and shopping malls. Bring the bikes, the kayaks, good books you never have a chance to read, movies to play in the DVD player, and family and friends you want to connect with. Plan on making picnic lunches and cooking up the freshest seafood you can get - cheap also. And then there are the blueberries ! We picked 10+ quarts in no time at all!!! Brought them home and are still making muffins and pies months later.

Plan on doing this cottage again!

The cottage name "who knew" is very fitting!!

  • 3 of 5

The cottage and our stay was absolutely wonderful!! The perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of life! The property manager and the owner of the cottage were very attentive and went above and beyond to ensure that we all had a great time. The property manger took the time to give us tips on where to go and what to see since we wanted to avoid the craziness of Bar Harbor. The cottage was stocked with new pots, pans, dishes, lines, flat screen TV, wifi, etc. Not with the expected family hand-me-downs. Also, being right on the water was an amazing addition, because we could watch the boats and the tides come and go. We would certainly stay at this cottage again.

Who Knew -- It couldn't Get Better

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at the "Who Knew" cottage on Pigeon Hill Bay was fabulous! Marvelous views of the bay out to Petit Manan Lighthouse, lots of wildlife. and friendly neighbors greeted us on our arrival. Nights were peaceful and cool.

The cottage was fully equipped with Satellite TV, Wifi, and the kitchen was supplied with everything you'd need for a lobster feed or even a Thanksgiving dinner. There was an outside gas fired Lobster cooker and a charcoal grill.

Wanda Pinkham, the property manager, was a huge help and very attentive.

There is lots to do in the immediate area. We attended a sculpture symposium and watched several artists creating their sculptures from beautiful blocks of Maine granite. We went to a Jazz recital at an old school house and heard an exceptional trio play well-known tunes and introduced us to a few new tunes. We hiked a trail in the Petit Manan National Wildlife Preserve that presented several habitats (beaches, XXX forest, etc) found in the region. And, at the end of Pigeon Hill road, we discovered a beautiful little, old, non-denominational church that is attended summer residents.

Best of all we got a lot of rest, just hanging at the cottage and walking the beach in front of the cottage. The cottage more than met all of our expectations.

This cottage was the best. We plan to rent it again. A great experience, overall!

Great base camp for exploring the downeast coast!

  • 4 of 5

We chose this property because of its location, cost, and cleanliness. The photos, descriptions, and amenities listed in the ad are accurate. The owners did a very nice renovation. The appliances, linens, dishes, and cookware are new- not family hand-me-downs from the '70s. The cabin is well appointed with the common creature comforts. We didn't feel the cabin was lacking any appliances or utensils.

The property was well maintained. We enjoyed spending our mornings watching a pair of bald eagles and combing the beach. The kids enjoyed hunting for sand crab, hermit crabs, and baby lobsters. We saw deer tracks in the sand, but not the deer.

The cottage was our coastal downeast base camp. At Robertson Sea Tours, we followed a pair of humpback whales bigger than the boat! We visited Acadia NP (x3), Lebec, ME (easternmost point in the US), and Rogue Cliffs state park. Hint: skip sand beach and the crowds at Acadia and go to Rogue Cliffs. We hiked Pigeon Hill and the trails at Petit Manan. We had an excellent, relaxing vacation.

I chose to award four stars instead of five. Why? The backyard area is lacking proper seating to spend a lot of time enjoying the outdoors. The property has folding steel-frame w/ fabric seats. There are a few seats and one lounge chair. The chairs are adequate for a brief sit, but not comfortable to where you would spend an afternoon in them while reading a book. Plastic Adirondack chairs would have been much appreciated and used.
