My husband and i grew up in oklahoma. We started our own horse trailer business with three of my husbands brothers and his dad, called sundowner trailers. We started out working in a cattle barn and grew into a multi million dollar business with sales yards all across the united states. Last year we retired from the business after 30 plus years. Then we decided to turn our home in costa rica into a bed and breakfast, after having many people stop and ask us if we rented our home out. One day while sitting on the verandah we made the decision to let other people enjoy what we feel is a million dollar view.
My husband and i have been together for 40 years, have two son's and 3 grandson's. We love the outdoors, nature and most of all our family.
We first went to costa rica on a vacation and fell in love with the country and its people. After going back there several times i had a friend that bought some property there. I decided to buy part of her property, and that is where the villa is today. I have traveled the world and still each time i visit costa rica i fall in love with it all over again.
LaQuitta Shipman purchased this villa in 2009
This is the closet beach town on the ocean from the san jose airport. We have the only villa that is located in the rain forest with an ocean view that is only a five minute walk to the beach and has a million dollar view. We are centrally located in the country, and, within only a couple or three hours from everything costa rica has to offer. Most of which are right here in jaco.
We offer our own tour guide 'oscar' that will take you places most guides won't tell you about such as waterfalls and hikes. He'll go on tours with you if you'd like and tell you about different plants and animals. He speaks very good english. He has his own van that will carry 8 to 10 people. He offers airport transfer to and from the airport. His wife 'Andrea' is an exceptional good cook. She will be preparing your breakfast at the villa, and on request she will offer other meals to be prepared for your dinner. Only if you want them and that will be an extra price that goes to her. Inquire about it and she will give you a great price. Everything she cooks is fresh and very very good. She will also come into your room and clean if you need her too. Other then this, oscar and andrea will give you your space and you will hardly know their there.
My husband and I stayed one week at this beautiful villa. Oscar picked us up at the airport (and brought us back). He is super nice and will help any way he can. Once we arrived the first thing I notice was that if we would have rented a car there was no parking. Only one tight spot for Oscar's van. Unless you are allowed to park at the bottom of the steep hill which we had to walk to and from each day but did not bother us as we are in good shape.
Upstairs there is two bedrooms that shares the same balcony. We were the only one there and happy for that as the bedroom we choose (king bed) does not give you total privacy if the other bedroom is rented. The king bed is very comfortable. The views from the balcony, and the bed, are out of this world. The next morning Andrea made us a big fruit plate for breakfast. Thank you Andrea. Every morning my husband and I enjoyed this delicious breakfast over looking the ocean and the only thing that was missing was comfortable chairs. They truly are not comfortable which is unfortunate.
Everyday we walk to town (10 - 15 min) and there is everything you need and people of Jaco are super friendly.
In the evenings if you are one to watch television this is not the place for you as they pretty much don't work. Unless you want to share the downstairs TV with Oscar and Andrea. Also if you wish to use the safe you will need batteries.
We used the wonderful pool almost daily for 15 minutes or so and Oscar and Andrea are awesome at giving you your space.
For me my biggest complaint was the shower. Ladies take note that the water pressure is pretty much non-existing. Overall this is a beautiful place that needs a little bit of attention here and there. Thank you Oscar and Andrea for making our stay almost perfect.
We were very fortunate to stay at the incredibly beautiful Villa Mariposa Bed & Breakfast for 2 nights in March 2016. This private retreat includes a beautiful infinity pool with a spectacular ocean view & cityscape of Jaco! Be sure to bring a set of binoculars to view the Toucans & Scarlet Macaws that frequent the area & pass by the bedroom balcony. The rooms are spacious, clean and include a mini refrigerator, coffee maker, WiFi and A/C. The caretakers of the property, Oscar & Anrdrea are gracious hosts who are willing & able to provide anything you may want or need. Start your day with a fresh, delicious plate of fruit prepared & served by Andrea - included with the room. Then head down to Jaco to enjoy the white sand beach, numerous shops & restaurants. We enjoyed a morning horse ride up the mountain and highly recommend the Taco Joint! Special thanks to owner LaQuinta Shipman for graciously renting out an additional room for friends who joined us last minute in Jaco.
My husband and I visited Costa Rica in March. We wanted to introduce some friends of ours who had never been to this beautiful country! This property was absolutely beautiful. The view was breathtaking! We spent the end of each day soaking in the infinity pool and enjoying that breathtaking view! The property was more then described. We cannot say enough about Oscar and Andrea. Oscar knows everyone and everything there is to do in Costa Rica. If you want a tour of any kind, he can get you connected to the right people. We were very well taken care of, thanks to Oscar. Andrea made delicious breakfasts for us each morning. One evening, our friend's made special arrangements with Andrea for her to cook us dinner! It was more than delicious! Unbelievable. Probably the best meal we had in all of Costa Rica!! Andrea keeps the home spotless and neat. We enjoyed our times talking with Oscar and Andrea. They made us feel welcomed, and it was if we had known them all our lives. We felt a little sad when we had to leave. :( When we return to Costa Rica, we will plan to stay here again!! Rich & Cheryl
This was such a vacation find. The house was beautiful and host Oscar and Andrea and were awesome. Do NOT miss Andrea's cooking. It was the best part of the day coming home and having a fine meal ready for you. Oscar was very informative and I feel like we have made some new friends in Costa Rica. I will miss seeing the beach from the canopy bed in the master bedroom and hearing the surf lull me to sleep at night. I would highly recommend this B&B (which is much more like a boutique hotel).

This home and its setting are absolutely beautiful. It has a fabulous view of Jaco Beach, but is high above the fray of the busy town. It is set on a hillside backing up to the rain forest. One day we saw nine scarlet macaws in the tree in front of the house and a couple of toucans while enjoying the pool in the afternoon. There are interesting hiking trails up the steep road, where you can spot birds and monkeys and see beautiful sunset views.
The home is beautifully decorated and has a lot of unique features, like the cool sinks and double showers in both of the guest bathrooms. The guest bedrooms are very spacious and share a lovely veranda with amazing views. The small infinity pool is perfect for cooling off in the afternoon. The grounds are very pretty, and Oscar takes great pride in his garden.
The accommodation is not the typical VRBO rental situation that we are used to. The property is cared for by a nice couple (Oscar and Andrea) who live in the downstairs bedroom and share the living space and kitchen with the guests renting the bedrooms upstairs. This is the first time we have seen this type of accommodation on the VRBO website. The website does describe it as a B&B, which is probably more accurate, except that the rate does not include daily servicing of the rooms. Oscar and Andrea are very respectful of their guests’ privacy.
Andrea makes various breakfasts each morning. We also asked her to cook dinner for us one evening, which was lovely and included a whole red snapper for each person. The cost was $15 apiece.
We found several things that needed repair, such as the Jacuzzi and the drain stopper of the bathtub in the master bathroom (making it totally unusable), a continuously running toilet in the master bathroom and many burned out bulbs throughout the house, which made the bedrooms rather dark at night.
Having caretakers on site does have its advantages. Oscar speaks perfect English and is very helpful with information about the area and recommendations for dining and sightseeing. And not being able to speak Spanish ourselves, we were glad to have his help and answer our questions.
I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to stay in the Jaco area and is looking for a B&B versus renting a traditional VRBO accommodation.
* Great view
* Great access to nature trails
* Good Wi-Fi
* Ability to do laundry
* TRAFFIC NOISE. House is on a hillside above a highway. Sound travels up. Highway busy 24/7. Noise dampened inside when air conditioning is running.
* SHARING HOUSE WITH CARETAKERS. Bedrooms for guests upstairs. Main level with kitchen, living room and television, and pool is caretakers residence. Awkward.
* CANNOT DRINK THE WATER. Water in the house is not drinkable.
* MAINTENANCE ISSUES. We sent a list of items to absentee owner. Hopefully, items will be fixed before next guests.
Jaco is centrally located. Jaco offers swimming, dune buggy's, four-wheeling, hiking, world class surfing, sport fishing, zip lines, bird watching or visit manuel antonio national park,a short 45 minute trip. There you'll see many of costa rica's wildlife. You can also hire 'oscar'our personal guide to take you to monteverde cloud forest which is about a 3 hour drive. There they offer amazing hikes in the cloud forest and some amazing zip line adventures. If you enjoy animal watching they also offer some amazing night hikes. While there you'll enjoy cooler weather as well. You really need to spend at least a full day to a day and a half there. You can also hire our guide to take you on an overnight trip to arenal national park where you will see arenal volcano and arenal lake. They offer warm pools of water that come straight from the volcano for you to set and relax in at their many inns and resorts. You can also enjoy some of the many breath taking garden tours. We always hire oscar because he knows his way around and likes taking our customers to some of his favorite spots that the other tour guides don't take you. Such as hidden water falls. He lets you take your time and enjoy everything costa rica has to offer. I highly recommend him. I also feel that his prices are very reasonable. Oscar can also take you on two fantastic monkey tours.
We also offer for an extra expense our house keeper 'andrea'. She is a fantastic cook and will cook for you on request a lovely dinner. We do ask that you give her plenty notice up front so that she has plenty time to shop and prepare the meal for you. She can give you a few ideas as well as to what she can prepare. You won't regret letting her do this for you.
