About Paula J. Dunbar ~ Dunbar Real State ~ Southwest Harbor, Maine 04679

The owners of Hyland Cottage have wanted to own a piece of Mount Desert Island for years. They searched for that 'special place' for years but the minute they saw Hyland, they knew their search had ended. Lovingly, picking out each item that decorates or furnishes the house was a real treat. The care and craftsmanship of caring owners adds some of the best touches to this holiday retreat. You will feel the warmth their ownership as you walk through the doors.

Guestbook comments from the manager

This was our first trip to Maine and what an amazing trip it was! Hyland Cottage was perfect for our family of 5 (2 adults and 3 busy boys – 14, 12, 10). There was plenty of room to spread out and relax after our adventurous days. Several evenings we chose to just stay at the cottage and cook dinner there. We loved to hang out on the deck overlooking Somes Sound while we grilled out and spent time together as a family. There was even a small yard for the boys to be boys! The location of this cottage was fabulous. We were tucked away on a quiet road but so very close to the main road. We spent lots of time in the stunning Acadia National Park but also ventured into Bar Harbor quite frequently, as well as several areas on the quiet side. Echo Lake is literally minutes away! The location of Hyland Cottage made everything so easy to get to in so little time. Hyland Cottage was exactly as described and as shown in the pictures. When we return to Maine, we look forward to another stay at Hyland Cottage!

Perfect little cottage

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 4 adults and 3 children (10,8,4yo) enjoyed our stay at this property. We loved the location (close to all but secluded and private), great wifi connection, charming decor, and prompt communication with the host. Highly recommend!

Beautiful Cabin in the Woods

  • 5 of 5

Beautifully appointed and maintained cabin in the woods with a lovely lake view. It's a quiet location a short distance from Southwest Harbour restaurants and numerous hiking trails (Acadia Mountain trail highly recommended). Bar Harbour was a 15 minute drive. The only disadvantage to this cabin is there is little noise insulation between floors and rooms so you can easily hear from room to room. That said, it's charming and I'd happily return, especially in warmer weather when we can enjoy the deck.

Great getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at Hyland cottage! It's centrally located which is really nice, but still far enough away that you feel like you can get away from it all. It was just two of us, but there were plenty of beds for a larger group. Keep in mind the upstairs bedroom and loft including the half bath are in the peak of the roof, so unless you are a shorter adult or a small child, you can't fully stand up in those rooms.

The kitchen had plenty of extras, even a Keurig for our morning coffee (there's a regular pot too). I didn't realize there was a toaster until about the 3rd day - there's additional appliances in the bottom cabinet :-) The living room was very cozy and there were a few throw blankets which were very nice as it got chilly while we were there. We did have to turn on the heat on 2 nights and used the fireplace one night too. Everything worked great!

This was our first trip to Maine, and we had a great time exploring Acadia and Bar Harbor. Definitely take the time to go to Bass Harbor lighthouse and do the trails nearby - we really liked the Ship Harbor trail.

October is a great time to visit, but remember the Island Shuttle stops running on Columbus day and the following day or two in Acadia is VERY busy with cars. We couldn't find parking near Jordan Pond the day after, so we just went back a few days later and had no trouble. You can go directly there or to Cadillac mountain without having to go all the way around Park Loop Road which was great to avoid traffic.

There's a small grocery store about 3 miles down the road from the cabin which was great for grabbing items for breakfast and quick dinners (we were out for lunch each day). The information on Google is incorrect for the fall - they close at 7pm and not 8 - useful information for those (like us) who got in the first night a little after 7 and showed up as they were closing the doors.

If you're on the fence about staying at Hyland cottage, definitely book your stay here! You'll have a wonderful time!

Our fall trip to MDI and Acadia National Park

  • 5 of 5

We have wanted to go to the Northeast to see the fall foliage. The cottage is conveniently located on MDI. It is nesseled in the pines and has a nice deck with a great view. It is nicely furnished and was very clean. Kitchen was fully stocked including basic cooking seasonings. The fall colors were spectacular. The manager was great to work with. We would definitely rent this cottage again.

Everything we'd hoped for

  • 5 of 5

My husband and three kids (8,6,&4) stay at Hyland Cottage in early June. We could not have asked for a better home or location for our trip - it was just as described. The cottage fit our family of 5 perfectly - the kids LOVED the upstairs loft. It was a perfect little nest for them and they continue to talk about it even now that we are home. The house was comfortable, but decorated very well (we felt like we could put our feet up and relax, but everything was so tasteful and not shabby!). The kitchen was well-equipped for lots of cooking. We worked quite a few puzzles, played games, read, ate meals on the deck that really does have an excellent view of Somes Sound. I was surprised by how quiet and secluded it was. Well off the main road, but still close enough to Acadia to make it an easy drive every day into the park. We loved how close it was to the Acadia Mtn. parking area (our favorite hike while we were there) and just minutes away from Southwest Harbor and restaurants/markets. I am ready to pencil in our trip for the summer of 2017 - we can't wait to go back. Working with Dunbar Realty was easy - they were prompt with all communication and the house was clean and immaculate upon arrival. Thanks for a great trip!!

Quaint, cozy, comfortable and close to everything

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful time! This cottage is cozy, clean, comfortable, well-stocked and very well organized. It is in a perfect location, very quiet and private yet only a short drive to both Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. It has a very large rear deck and grassy lawn where we watched deer almost every night while sipping coffee. The kitchen was full of everything you could possibly need and had a nice view of Sommes Sound. The interior was spacious and comfortable and super clean; cottage cute but with all the modern conveniences readily available. In all correspondence the manager was prompt, courteous and very professional, answering all of my questions right away. Acadia National Park was stunningly beautiful and we enjoyed Bar Harbor downtown shops and restaurants after hiking all day.
