If you dont feel like spending your well deserved vacation in Highrise Hotels, timeshares or condos in Cancun or Playa del Carmen , and you are rather looking for relaxation and recreation in the real Mexico, the unspoilt Caribbean Feeling of El Cuyo may something you should consider.
Puerto del Cuyo is a small, unspoiled Beachtown filled with Cocunut palm trees near Holbox, and is today the only coastal town in the Yucatan which is dotted with palm trees. At all other beaches in the Yucatan, the palm trees were exterminated by a plague some years ago, and were sadly not reforested . Not so in Puerto del Cuyo, here you can still find the Caribbean Feeling mixed with mexican flair that used to be found in every Yucatan Beach town.
Hacienda del Cuyo with Penthouse and Casa Maya Lodge is a private three-story beach house built in colonial spanish style right on the pristine beaches of El Cuyo.It is equipped with air conditioning in the bedrooms, for better sleeping comfort of our guests. The cushioned lounge chairs on the beach and our hammocks invite you for sunbathing and relaxing the Mexican Way. The Villa is surrounded by many coconut palm trees with plenty of natural shade.. From large beach terraces you can admire sunrises and sunsets over the ocean. Up to 8 people find room on the ground floor , up to 4 people in the Penthouse (Floor 2 ) 1 bedroom, fully equipped kitchen, living/bedroom, bathrooms with hot water. The Casa Maya Lodge on the 3rd Floor has a Queensize Bed, Bathroom and Kitchenette and Terrace. A tropical garden with a palapa and palm trees invite you for get-togethers.Its ideal for families with children, seniors, singles and adults that don't want to spend their well deserved Vacations on crowded beaches.
Activities: Mayan Ruins, flamingo-, bird-, whaleshark-, dolphin and seaturtle watching, caves, cenotes, colonial cities, markets, bullfights, etc.
Service upon Arrival: The Caretaker will receive you in the Villa and hand you over the keys.

' We departed for an adventure through the Americas in May 2012, driving a Toyota Landcruiser HZJ75 and being on the road with our two canine overlanders makes us really happy. We plan to stay on the road until some time in 2015. Starting the adventure in Halifax, exploring wonderful Newfoundland, heading west through Canada, enjoying the summer up in Yukon, the Indian Summer in British Columbia, Centralamerica with all its edgyness and soon Southamerica.'
The best career decision I've made in my life was to come to this beautiful country,....Mexico.
I love the country and its people, but their slowness, tardiness and informality in some cases still bothers me, even after 20 years I now live here. You just have to put everything into the balance ... it's a bit hard to explain .... but it's something like if you want a fruit that has no shell or skin, is something ... thats not possible.
I was born and educated in Bamberg, Germany and finished my career there. After that, I went to work for the Mouse in Disney World in Orlando Florida and have worked in the German Pavilion at Epcot , .. followed by 2 years at Lufthansa in Frankfurt. Driven by wanderlust ... I then followed the call Mexico's in 1993.
I lived for 20 years in Cancun, Mexico, ... and still work part time in 5 star hotels. 12 years ago I started with the first Vacation apartment. We now have 7 and also rent you our Vw Beetle to our guests. We are the owners of these houses and can be reached anytime personally, by phone or by email. In the Competition of the Landlord of the Year in 2011, we made the 3 place, and in 2012 we reached the 1st place. It's a lot of fun with guests, and we are always passing along our longtime experience in Mexico . We look forward hosting you ...

Who do we recommend to rent a vacation home in Yucatan?
If you are interested in getting to know the mexican culture, its people the hospitality and its food , is flexible and willing to learn more about the 'Mexican way of Life'and wants to experience more 'Local Flavour'... away from the beaten Tourist path and 5 Star Hotels ..you will enjoy it..come and stay with us.
Who should reconsider it?
If you are looking to be pampered in a 5 Star All inclusive Hotel and need Buffett style meals , having an English speaking concierge 24 hours a day...then do yourself a favor..and dont renta a vacation home.
Hacienda del Cuyo:
Working in Cancun´s Hotel Business during the week , on days off, we enjoy travelling in the Yucatan with its fabled culture, away from the city .. and mass tourism. In February 2000, we have come by accident to El Cuyo ... the drive threre was overwhelming ... over a reddish pink lagoon with flamingos, the road led to the village .. further to a Mayan pyramid with a lighthouse built on top of it. The roads in El Cuyo are made of sand and coconut palm trees everywhere in the quaint Village. Miles of fine white sand beach with no tourists but lots of seashells.. as far as the eye can see. We were delighted, and then spent every free weekend in El Cuyo. One day, someone offered us a small house for sale. There was at that time only a ground floor. We immediately fell in love with this 'rough diamond' and have restored it with much passion. we didnt think of it as a rental business at that time. After some time, we have added the 2nd floor Penthouse and te Rustic Casa Maya Lodge.
We still spend every free weekend in El Cuyo ... now with our 2 young Kids...
We acquired it in 2002 and 2012, lovingly converted it to the Hacienda Antigua. Outside walls are handmade of a natural stone facade by Mayan Craftsmanship. Inside a Mayan artist from Izamal Hand-painted colonial decorations on the Walls .Lots of heavy wrought iron was used inside the Hacienda. The Beach terrace covers a big Pyramid shaped palapa , so our guests can always hide in the cooling shade of this palm thatched masterpiece.

We enjoyed our time at this house and in El Cuyo. The apartment was large and clean (we were in the second floor apartment). It comfortably accomidated 2 adults and 2 kids. There could have been some more essentials such as dish soap, matches, sponge, dish towel but it was easy to pick these things up at the store in town and we were told that they would not be provided. The view from our deck was fantastic and the house was actually better than I expected (it is nicer than the photos). This is a perfect place to visit if you want a quiet beach in a small town. Also You should try restaurant amigo de Omar, they were very good. Another tip is the closest ATM is an hour away and no one takes credit cards in town so bring pesos. We hope to come back again and would certainly try to stay in the same spot.
Everything was as described. I would do this trip again.I would note that it is very important to buy food staples
before arriving. Also if you were thinking of alcohol, there is none to be had in El Cuyo.Christian made us wonderful dinners.
Magally was so sweet.
This property is in a great location. To be able to wake up & see the water from the terrace, while sipping your coffee I s breathtaking. The house is comfortable and spacious. The kitchen is very well equipped. The caretakers, Magali and Cristian are awesome. They will prepare the best, healthiest, and delish fish dinner you can imagine. They are very helpful & accommodating. Matthias, the owner, will get back to you right away with any question you might have. There is a caretaker to clean the entrance to the beach. Remember you are at the beach and so the internet service is not always reliable.
We had a fantastic time in El Cuyo, and this property was perfect. We live in Tulum and wanted to get away from our work and the tourists, and also enjoy having our dogs with us. It was like being in Tulum over 15 years ago. Super tranquil, no hassles, only a few people on the beach (mostly some kiteboarders on the other end) and totally disconnected.
The house was amazing. We stayed in the 2nd floor Penthouse 1 bedroom, and it was just wonderful. The bedroom was so romantic and comfortable, more than adequate kitchen, great outdoor terrace, smartly set up indoor living space, and the dogs (when not playing on the beach) loved hanging out in the back shaded garden and visiting with some of the local pups, most of whom don't have homes (one cute little girl even came back to Tulum with us!). It was just what we wanted. It's located in a nice centro spot on the beach, and very peaceful.
The caretaker was available for anything we needed. She and her husband were very sweet. We speak Spanish and had no problems communicating and enjoyed a couple of conversations with them. We had them bring a langosta dinner one night, negotiated the price, and it was great.
We had brought some things from home, shopped for the rest before arrival, and lacked nothing while we were there. We bought fish from the port, and made them on the fire / grill in back.
Don't come here if you expect luxury resort accommodations and services. Don't come here if you want to be surrounded by other tourists (unless in high season).
Don't come here if you don't know how to relax.
Don't come here if you expect to be in a city with all the amenities of "home."
But by all means, come here if you want to enjoy a wonderful vacation and RELAX!!! We'll be back as soon as we can.
NOTES: If you travel with dogs, be respectful of their watch and care for picking up after them and ensuring they do not disturb the turtle nests. Our dogs are well trained and we do not let them out of sight more than you would a young child.
Expect some bugs. Tabanos and mosquitos are part of the eco-system, and I hate them as much as anyone, but they are part of beach and environment seasonally.
Sweep your floor! When staying on the beach, there is lots of SAND (yes, sand! Imagine?)! Just sweep the floor once a day, and/or put a bucket of water at the door to rinse your feet before entering. Even though there's an outdoor rinsing area, there's more sand on the stairs, etc.
We enjoyed a visit to El Cuyo Hacienda during the first week of December 2013. It was beautiful! The Hacienda was exactly what we expected, clean and simple. We stayed in the penthouse efficiency, which offers an amazing view of the ocean and the sounds of the waves to lull you to sleep. Our host caretakers Christian and his wife Magali were the best! Christian speaks some English and is easy to help with communication. He led us on an awesome guided tour of the flamingo breeding ground and for lunch in Rio Lagartos. Magali prepared dinner for us, tended the efficiency and even helped with laundry! The efficiency offered the basics in comfort unfortunately lack of funding seems to leave some things in less than perfect condition but the caretakers make every effort to compensate for these short comings. We did experience some roof leaking during a heavy rain but safety was never an issue. We enjoyed our accommodations and company. Can’t wait to return!

Puerto del Cuyo is a typical laid back Fisherman's Village away from the crowds.
If you are thinking about an eco-tourism adventure or weeks of relaxation and privacy near a ocean with turquoise greenish
waters and white sand sprinkled with a beautiful variety of shells,
which invite to explore and make long walks on the beach, Hacienda
del Cuyo is an option you shouldnt miss. We invite you to walk the
beach in front of the Villa in the morning, enjoying a brilliant
dawn and during the evening you will be able to see
spectacular sunsets on the same beach. This is one of the
many advantages to stay at this Villa, as it faces the northern
waters, spectacular dawns and sunsets can be watched.
And there is more… if you get tired to watch the ocean, we invite
you to take a look behind the villa to the south towards Ria
Lagartos, where you will find countless pink flamingos, unique in
this region, nesting very near in the calm waters of the Lagoon.
