A seasonal stream runs next to the Cottage along side wild raspberry bushes, spring bulbs and wildflowers. The Cottage sits on 1/2 acre behind your host's main house. It has its own private drive, carport and 2 parking spaces. Te property has 3 apricot trees, a cherry and an apple tree. A nature/bike trail begins at the end of the drive, heads up to Hidden Valley. Our property backs up to the San Juan National Forest and wildlife is abundant. Elk, deer, wild turkeys, black bear, hummingbirds, chipmunks, squirrel, many native birds, Golden Eagles have been seen on and around the Cottage. Bear do come onto the property when food sources become scarce at higher elevations, therefore it is imperative that summer guests do not leave food in their cars nor outside on the property. Bears love BBQ grills, therefore we do not provide one and enjoy our steaks at one of the many fine restaurants Durango has to offer! Bring your camera! If you are lucky enough to see a bear, you can take magnificent photos safely from inside the Cottage as they make their way across the property. It is an unforgettable experience! Black Bear (No Grizzly Bears!) are mostly herbivores, usually more frightened of people, and will pass on through quickly. Being cautious allows us to live in bear country without incident.
We are located just off US 550 which is known as the Million Dollar Highway. You can take it north to Silverton and visit a working gold mine or south to Farmington if you crave big city life. Durango has 9 movie theaters, a wonderful Rec Center, live theater and show, festivals and of course, the train! No visit to Durango is complete without taking a ride on the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad!
The drive back to the Cottage is single lane and paved. The turn around radius is small and large trucks or duelies have more trouble navigating than regular sized pick-ups, cars and SUVs.
Your host is a retired hotelier who chose this remarkable property as a place to retire. I am an avid photographer and love to rock hunt! Come visit our mountain paradise; seek your adventure and renew your spirit.
Candace Richerson purchased this cottage in 2012
As a rock hound and amateur geologist, the first time I drove up US 550 and saw the glacier cut valley on the north side of Durango, with its towering red and white cliffs, my heart jumped! I looked at houses up and down this valley until I found the perfect place for me. To be able to share this piece of Paradise with visitors is a humbling experience.
If you need or would like to have certain food and beverage or flowers in the Cottage before you arrive, I am happy to do that. You have the comfort of being a guest at my home while having the privacy of your own accommodations. The linens are fresh and new. You won't have anyone above nor below to keep you awake. You are out of town, yet close (10 minutes) to downtown.
We had a wonderful time in the cute cabin. It is all we can do to get out of here and move it back to Texas. Thank you for the generous hospitality and gorgeous view. It was voted our best Christmas ever.
Best and Thanks,
Everything was wonderful. Great getaway. We will definitely be back. Great for a couple!!!
We just spent five nights at this adorable cottage. Perfect for a couple with their dog. It was so comfortable and clean and had everything we needed. We got fresh produce from James Ranch and made delicious healthy meals- truly the best steak ever. The location was perfect for fishing, hiking and going to town. It was sooooo much better than any hotel experience.
We loved it. Candace keeps the cottage clean and functional completely independent from the house. The place is secluded but right there close to everything perfect location really and so beautiful all around, so beautiful with a little creek running by the side. I saw 2 cubs one night just outside our door how close to nature is that?
in the other hand is a 10 minutes drive to the wine store/supper market. We were very happy to stay there.
Had a great time biking in the area. Accommodations were simple yet comfortable. Thank you Candace!
Had a great time recently visiting family in Durango. Candace's place was clean, cute and just perfect as was the banana bread! Thanks Candace. Had everything we needed for two including privacy if you want a place away from all the hustle and bustle! The only problem was the bed. Not a lot of comfort/support especially for two people. We discussed this with Candace and she has since informed me she's purchased a mattress topper until she can replace bed next year. Perhaps a sleep number or other kind with more support and wearability would be perfect and a good investment. The weather was perfect and we got to do some kayaking and checked out some of the local restaurants. Check out Seasons meat and cheese tray. Yummy! There's no a/c in the cottage for those like me from Texas who need it. But it was okay with the window and extra floor fan Candace provided. The weather was cool at night and felt great! Thanks again for everything Candace! Linda & Tom from Texas
This cottage is perfect for two people wanting to stay outside the town but be close as well. It's very clean, quiet, nicely furnished, compact, and has everything that's necessary. The owner's home is next door should there be a need. It was great to hear the train whistle in the mornings and evenings as it passed about a mile away. Durango has so much to offer. The views from the cottage property were fantastic and it was very relaxing to sit outside under the trees and read or even nap. I wouldn't hesitate to book it again on my next trip to Durango. There's a fantastic "Serious Texas BBQ" restaurant at the north end of Durango that is totally authentic with wonderfully delicious Texas smoked brisket and pork with all the trimmings. I'd go out of my way to eat there again. It's a lot closer than driving all the way to Texas. The 2 seat couch in the living room had to be turned to view the small screen TV which was a minor inconvenience. The TV has many channels and a DVD player that worked just fine. I'd recommend this cottage to any one to two person party.
Year-round opportunities for adventure are just outside our door: hiking/bike trails on property, Nordic adventures just 20 minutes away at the Durango Mountain Resort (Ski Purgatory); Trimble Hot Springs Spa is within walking distance; one of Durango's most beautiful golf courses, Dalton Ranch, is within a mile; Historic Downtown Durango and the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is 10 minutes away.
Durango's nightlife is legendary with many local breweries and gourmet restaurants. Floating down the Animas river on a hot summer day is truly a bucket list experience. Just a couple of miles north is James Ranch, a sustainable working ranch with the best burgers and organic produce in the area. History lovers will find the ancient dwellings of Mesa Verde captivating. Movie buffs can stand where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid jumped off a cliff or see the cash register where Clark Griswold stole money in National Lampoon's Family Vacation. Make sure your camera is charged or you have plenty of film as our home in the mountains is also home to deer, elk, bear, wild turkeys, an assortment of chipmunks and hummingbirds. Rock hunters, there are thousands of closed mines with traillings waiting for you to sift through them! Geology hammer and loop available upon request.
PJ's Gourmet Grocery and a liquor store are located within a mile.
Please keep in touch with your arrival and departure times. I like to great guests in person! Check-in after 4:00pm. Check-out at 10:00am.
