Overview

Upper Manhattan Townhome Rental Photos and Description

Townhome, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-9)

This is really a one of a kind apartment in central Harlem. It is a duplex apt that features a great open kitchen with everything you need to cook and eat! A large dining room that can seat up to eight, a living room with a sectional sofa bed, flat screen tv with cable, wifi, and bookcase.

When you enter the apt, you walk into a large open space that leads you through the living room, kitchen, dining room and a back door that leads you into the backyard that has patio furniture, grill and a deck. Great place to have spring/summer/fall breakfasts or winding down at the end of the night. There is also one full bathroom upstairs, and two very comfortable air mattresses that sleep two each.

Downstairs you'll find a large sleeping quarter with two queen size beds, and a large full bathroom as well. You can sleep four downstairs, and five upstairs.

It’s a great place for weddings, large group trips where private bedrooms are NOT necessary.

I have another apt in the same building that sleeps 1-3 guests.

And a NEW apt to the market that sleeps up to 6 guests, ask me about it!

All linens, and towels included.

All payments for this apt is made through the vrbo Reservation Manager

About The Owner

I am a chef/caterer as well as a professional buyer in the food/consumer goods industry. The husband is an entrepreneur who puts too much faith in me! We have two young boys who keep us busy and young. Together we are a strong and passionate team of four who work hard and play even harder! We love Harlem and everything it has to offer, and are forever spreading the word on this amazing neighborhood.

The Owner purchased this townhome in 2005

Why The Owner chose Manhattan

When I met my husband over 7 years ago all he talked about was Harlem, he was rootly involved in the rehabilitation of many Brownstones back when no one wanted to be there, and was passionate about owning a part of history. He was very specific about what he wanted, and sent me out in the jungle with his list to find it. And I didn't fail. Five years and two gorgeous boys later, our dream of owning a Brownstone in the historic neighborhood of Harlem came to fruition, and we couldn't be happier to share it with the world. We hope you enjoy the neighborhood, culture and soul as much as we do. We love waking up in the morning and strolling the streets of the city. There is really nothing like it (except a great cup of coffee).

Good location, cool apartment

  • 3 of 5

My review is difficult because I have a vacation rental and I know how difficult it is to maintain. I first must say the apartment is in a super cool location. You are super close to the subway, close to nice restaurants (BLVD Bistro my fav!) it's a neat neighborhood. The apartment is perfect for a family or a group of people. The bathrooms are beautifully redone, the decor is very hip and cool, A/C was a blessing, the bedding was comfortable. There were lights out downstairs which was fixed during our stay when we emailed. However, my complaints are two.

First, the security of the apartment is poor. I don't want to compromise the security to the folks who occupy the rest of the building, but in speaking with a neighbor, the security of the whole building is not "secure." There is a code to enter the apartment via a keypad that unlocks the deadbolt and there was no other lock once you are in the apartment. There is a silly pull lock that serves absolutely no purpose. I did not feel super secure knowing that anyone that may have had or have that code could re-enter the apartment.

Second, the apartment was not very clean. Perhaps I was spoiled from just coming from a VRBO that was immaculate. Some of these problems are probably from housekeeping. Management needs to know that housekeepers aren't doing an A+ job and I'll list the issues here. I also think it's important to stay at your rental every once in a while so that you can see the issues that need repair or fixing. There was a smell on the first floor (like bad body odor) and the bottom floor reeked of bug spray. I get that there is probably a bug or spider problem they are trying to address, but it was a bummer to sleep with the smell of bug spray. The walls downstairs were dirty and there was a very dirty and old sponge left to wash the dishes. I didn't use the sponge (I used paper towels) but I'm sure that sponge was used to wash the dishes prior to us. I re-washed the silverware because they were dirty as was the drawer they were in. There should be a new sponge left each visitor, plain and simple. There was food left in the fridge. The entry way into the apartment needs some TLC. The rug in the bathroom was dirty. On a positive front, the linens and towels were fresh and clean. Wi-fi worked great, beds were comfortable, well working appliances.

Bottom line, it was a nice place, not sure I would recommend to a friend simply based on security and cleanliness.

Awesome sisters' weekend retreat

  • 5 of 5

This was a great place to stay for our annual weekend retreat. We had some minor issues that were immediately addressed by Amal. This is an older home so plan for that. (Electrical was updated but there were still fewer outlets in some rooms than in a new home.). But there are great updates and we were very comfortable. In fact, I slept on the pull-out sofa bed and was amazingly comfortable.

The grocery store was only about 2-3 blocks away. The subway was also an easy walk and made our tourist times easy and convenient. Central Park was a beautiful respite in the city and also within walking distance.

This location is great with a variety of restaurants within walking distance, as well. Couple that with a responsive owner and this is an excellent rental choice!

Everything was just great once again! I came on a girls trip last summer and this year I returned with my mom and her friend and they loved the apartment. They cooked, enjoyed the patio, and the porch. Walking distance to subway, grocery store, restaurants, and clubs. We all will rent this spot again!!

not so happy

  • 2 of 5

I was disappointed in my stay at the Harlem appt this summer. When we got there the outdoor court yard was very dirty. It had not been swept in weeks; there was a smell to the garbage cans outside the door. The entry way into the front door was also very dirty and unkempt, the pavement had an old worn out pad, which was gummy. The interior of the appt had been cleaned, but the rugs were not vacuumed. The furniture was poorly maintained. The patio was poorly maintained. We had drinks in the back patio and the next morning we notice flea bites on the feet’s and lower legs. We then had drinks in the front steps of the appt all other nights. We meet the neighbors who were nice and friendly. The Front Door of the appt needed work. The bathroom mats needed for be washed. Mats had not been replaced or washed for an extended amount of time. So, in general the appt needs maintenance. I would not recommend the appt at this time.

PS. This is my 5th appt rented through Home Away from Home and it was a disappointment.

Owner's Response: After reading your review of our apartment and was in shock. I really wish you would've reached out to me from day one in regards to any issues you might have had. We actually pay our cleaning service extra during the spring/summer months to keep the patio area clean, and I remember speaking to them before your visit in particular because it was right before 4th of July. If they did not clean it properly it is something I would've liked to know about so that I could address it with them. This is the first time I am hearing that the place seems to not be maintained well. I think it is evident from all our other reviews that the property is taken care of and is always clean. The sofa bed is brand new, the sectional is about 4 years old, and a lot of the other pieces are antiques. I am not sure which furniture appeared to be maintained poorly. The bathroom mats as well as everything else in the apartment is cleaned after every visit, and I have many mats to switch, I really do wish you would've reached out to me, I have so many mats, I could've switched it out for you. It is disappointing to me that you did not get the high standard experience I like to give all my guests. I do apologize for your experience, had I known you were having any of these issues I would tried everything in my power to remedy it. Unfortunately I was never given that opportunity.

Great Urban Getaway

  • 4 of 5

The property looks exactly like the pictures. My friends and I wanted to experience living amongst the people in a Harlem brownstone and we definitely got that. We were close to public transportation and used it easily and often. There are great places to eat all around and a grocery store within waking distance as well. We felt safe and cozy in the place. The only negatives were lighting issues. The dining area had a light out and it was subsequently very dim. Also, the front door area has a light with a string pull but the string is too short to reach so we used our cell phones to see the lock. The back patio was nice but we couldn't enjoy it at night due to poor lighting in the table area. So a bit better illumination will take this rental to five star status. Thanks for the great stay Amal.

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed your stay! We have replaced the bulbs that are out, and will put in some outdoor lighting. Thanks for the tips!
