About Ellen Hill

I am honored to have a home that allows me to share the beauty of Vermont. I lived in Vermont since 1974 take great pride in our cultural heritage and environment. If you are a lover of nature and culture--or desire a quiet, private get-away, this place will offer you many options.

As an advid biker, skier, kayaker and all-around general outdoor enthusiast, I'd be honored to share the magic of the region.

Ellen Hill purchased this studio in 2013

Why Ellen Hill chose Stowe Area

The Pondhouse has been called magical and enchanted. I've travelled and lived all over the world and served in the Peace Corps. To own a home (that actually has two homes) and allows me to host people from all over the world is a unique privilege. Now that I have offered The Pondhouse to others and I read the reviews and the notes that are left behind, I know that others cherish their time here and create special memories. I have been meeting the nicest people who love the magic of Vermont!

What makes this studio unique

The Pondhouse has been described many ways:

"The "home" as well as the outside surroundings with the gardens and the mountains in the background are spectacular, peaceful and pristine."

"Perfect weekend getaway to escape the city and find true peace and quiet. The house was tucked away and all you could hear were birds and frogs."

"The Pondhouse felt like a home away from home."

"If you are looking for a convenient, well- appointed, lovely spot to get away from it all, this is your place. The photos can't possibly do it justice."

"It is a perfect place for a couples getaway, great space for cooking and enjoying a meal and each other."

"It's peaceful with beautiful surroundings, yet conveniently located just down the road from the bustle at Smuggler's Notch."

Come discover the magic for yourself!

I read the reviews for September and they covered everything I planned to say about the Pondhouse. It felt like our second home. We stayed for 3 wonderful days. Ellen is the perfect host. She greeted us on our first day and gave us several suggestions on what to see and do in the area. There is also a notebook on the desk with loads of maps, pamphlets, etc. We took one of Ellen's suggestions and drove to the islands on Lake Champlain. It was less than an hour away and well worth the trip. We had a fantastic vacation and hope to return.

Wonderful Relaxing place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

We had such a good time at the Pond Cottage. The cottage is so comfortable and well appointed, there is nothing you will need that is not there! The property and view is so beautiful and relaxing. We sat on the patio, read in the daytime, and had a glass of wine in the evening. We saw deer by the pond one morning and twice while walking up the street! Ellen is such a great host, she is so friendly and there if you need her but if you want privacy you have it. This was our second time staying there and we will be back again next year.

Wonderful, beautiful, quiet spot

  • 5 of 5

We stayed 3 nights at Pondhouse. The guest room is open and spacious with very comfortable furniture and extremely well stocked kitchen. There is a gorgeous view of mountains and the owner's gardens. The apartment has lots of very pleasing original paintings and art. There is a nice private outside sitting area. We really enjoyed our stay and Ellen, the owner, is extremely friendly and a pleasure to talk to. A great place to stay. If you plan on doing much cooking, I would suggest stocking up at the Hannaford's supermarket in Morrisville or at the Shaws in Waterbury as options are more limited in Cambridge. We would gladly stay again.

Owner's Response: Another good shopping option for shopping is the Sterling Market in Johnson (approximately 11 miles away). Our local Hanley's Market does have most everything, yet not the range of items as the larger markets you mention. It was a pleasure to host you! Ellen

Perfect End of Summer Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We decided last minute to spoil ourselves and rent a place to stay while in Vermont instead of roughing it camping the entire week. Of course, the prices to rent in Vermont can be quite costly compared to what we are used to paying when we venture down to Georgia, which is why I was amazed to find that Ellen's gorgeous little Pondhouse was within our budget.

We arrived in the late afternoon and were thrilled with the place. So very quiet and peaceful. The rental itself was clean and the most well stocked place we had ever stayed in. The kitchen was a dream! I don't eat out and it had all the pots, pans and pretty much every other kitchen gadget I needed.

Ellen was a wonderful hostess, and very well informed about all there is to do in the area. Such a pleasure to meet her. Booking our vacation was a breeze and our security deposit was refunded less then 48 hours later. I always worry about this, as twice now, with other rentals, I have had to bother people about getting that refund back.

Back to the property, while some people might be more private and want blinds on all of the windows, I was ecstatic that there weren't many, and sleeping in was not an option with all we had planned each day, so the early morning sun shining into the house was more then welcome and absolutely lovely. The bed was super comfortable and we slept with the windows open each night, something we can't do at our own home because of all the noisy traffic in the city.

Cycling and hiking being the main objectives of our trip, the location around the Stowe area was perfect. There are so many places to do both. We did the Sterling Pond Hike and did an amazing road bike right from the front door. Hit up the mountain bike trails in Waterbury one day and Cady Hill trails, right in Stowe, the next. Afterwards we went to the Waterbury Reservoir and rented paddle-boards for a couple of hours. Of course my husband had to stop at Cold Hollow Cider Mill for the famous cider donuts. So much to do!!

On the rainy day of our trip we went to Montpelier, Stowe and Burlington to do some shopping.

Can't wait to go back for a ski trip sometime this winter!!!!!

Warm welcoming

  • 5 of 5

The grounds are beautiful and you can see Ellen takes good care of her gardens. Lots of things to do a short drive from the house, but even just relaxing there was nice too. It's like being outside due to the large open windows. I highly recommend a stay here!
