A beautiful hand crafted lodge with its own private deck overlooking a beautiful waterfall on the cascading Hickory Nut Creek. The lodge is nestled at the base of Little Bearwallow Mountain next to 200 acres of natural forest with five miles of hiking trails. It is located only 25 minutes from downtown Asheville, NC in the heart of the incredible Hickory Nut Gorge. The lodge contains a great room/living room, kitchen, loft, four bedrooms, 4.5 baths, and a large downstairs room for yoga and movement. Laughing Waters is located in the Hickory Nut Forest Eco-Community. It is a very special place for a peaceful, quiet retreat in these beautiful sacred mountains!
There is also a Creekside Cottage located upstream from the lodge overlooking two waterfalls that sleeps two people and can be rented separately. (see listing #3565363)
My wife Jane and I were best friends in high school in Ohio and fortunately re-connected here in North Carolina 30 years later. Jane first discovered Asheville and Western North Carolina in the 1970’s, drawn to the beauty of the area and the wild character of the mountains. John was living in New York and working with non-profits to protect over 20,000 acres of land for parks and trails. An avid rock climber, John also fell in love with the southern mountains.
In 2003, we heard about the land through a friend whose family had owned it for nearly 100 years. The land was in the heart of Hickory Nut Gorge and had not been occupied for over 60 years. We discovered a wild jewel with tumbling waterfalls along the tumultuous Hickory Nut Creek, overgrown stone walls of a farmhouse and the ruins of an old gristmill. We immediately fell in love for the place. Over the next 10 years, our vision for the land has continually expanded from conserving the wild lands to creating a sustainable community with organic gardens and orchard, hiking trails, renewable energy from the sun and water, green-solar homes and the Laughing Waters Retreat Center.
John Myers and Jane Lawson purchased this lodge in 2004
We don’t feel we 'own' this land. Rather, we feel more aligned as stewards, here to protect it. We are full of wonder and awe at nature’s intricate beauty. Living here is about discovering mysteries and miracles: the springtime sprouting shoots on the forest floor, the blooming of delicate wildflowers, the soaring trees spreading green leaves in a summer canopy, the magical transformation into vibrant fall colors, and the reappearance of the distant mountain vistas in winter.
We have kept the most special places wild for all to enjoy: the cascading streams, tumbling waterfalls, sheer cliffs, and distant vistas. Residents and visitors can enjoy miles of hiking trails on our land, in the adjoining 600 acres of the Florence Nature Preserve, and down the gorge in Chimney Rock State Park.
If you love the outdoors, this is magical place!
We are deep in the heart of the Hickory Nut Gorge, a steep valley carved out of the mountains starting at the continental divide dropping down to Chimney Rock State Park and Lake Lure. From your lodge overlooking two beautiful waterfalls, you can hike up to the top of Little Bearwallow Mountain through 200 acres of natural forest with amazing views. The cottage is part of the Laughing Waters Retreat Center in Hickory Nut Forest. This sustainable eco-community includes organic gardens and apple orchard, conserved lands, renewable energy, and solar-green homes. Guests are welcome to hike, swim, bird watch, enjoy the gardens, go mountain biking, or just relax on the deck and listen to the sound of the rushing water. Enjoy dining in Chimney Rock and Lake Lure, or make your own feast in the cottage kitchen. And we are only 25 minutes from all the music, restaurants and culture in Asheville.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Laughing Waters. The property is beautiful and absolutely lived up to the pictures on the website and fulfilled our expectations. It was very private and secluded and yet close enough to groceries and other necessities. Our favorite part was having access to an amazing hiking trail right in our own backyard. We also loved sitting on the back porch reading and hearing the babbling brook behind the house. Our only negative comment would be that the kitchen was poorly equipped. The pots and pans were very old and looked dirty. We like to cook as a family and the lack of adequate cookware made it challenging. I would highly encourage the owners to update their kitchen utensils! Everything else was great!
From the moment we pulled up the driveway we were so impressed. The grounds are spectacular literally nestled on the hiking trail. There are waterfalls, bridges and a beautiful tree lined mountain. The house itself was fantastic! We had 6 adults and 4 children and there was plenty of room. The kids loved the playroom downstairs. We cooked big meals from the fully stocked kitchen, lit fires in the stone fire pit outside and enjoyed the scenery. In fact, the house was so great that we changed our plans from heading to town to take full advantage of our family time on the property. Thank you for a great vacation!
Had a great time at Laughing Waters .. House was great , very clean. Great family time. Lots of hiking trails nearby. Kitchen was well equipped and house very nice. Owners easy to work with -- good communication. Couple of notes... There is one small cabin on the same property that was rented and we were somewhat surprised to find someone else on the property -- They were great but would have been nice to know that someone else was on the property. Take your own grill if needed because there is not one there. Also no TV which I thought was fine but just so you know .... Wireless internet worked great .
Would rent again !!! Thanks..
Eco-friendly, super clean, spacious, beautiful location, great for family gatherings. My family was able to gather here for the first time in 8 years and we were all so impressed.
The entire property exceeded our expectations. The house was roomy and we never found ourselves lacking anything we might need. We spent time hiking and exploring the grounds and could not have enjoyed it more. My only suggestion to the property manager would be to give future renters a heads up if one of the smaller cabins on the property is rented at the same time - we were quite *surprised* when a mystery car pulled up late at night since we thought we were alone up on the mountain behind a locked gate!
Our group of 8 adults and 1 toddler stayed at this cabin for 3 nights for the 2013 New Year's Eve holiday. Before our arrival the owners had already set up a nice warm fire for us in the wood-burning stove inside of the great room! The cabin itself was very spacious with 4 bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms, each of which were updated and very clean. The entire cabin was beautifully crafted and kept in great condition. During the time we were there, we explored the property and trails around the cabin, which are extremely beautiful as the cabin is set right in front of a creek that winds through several small waterfalls. We also visited Asheville (~20 minutes away) and a nearby ski resort (Cataloochee, ~ 60 minutes away), which were both great and only a close distance away. We would definitely return to this location again!
