We were best friends in high school in Ohio and fortunately re-connected here in North Carolina 30 years later. Jane first discovered Asheville and Western North Carolina in the 1970’s, drawn to the beauty of the area and the wild character of the mountains. John was living in New York and working with non-profits to protect over 20,000 acres of land for parks and trails. An avid rock climber, John also fell in love with the southern mountains.
In 2003, we heard about the land through a friend whose family had owned it for nearly 100 years. The land was in the heart of Hickory Nut Gorge and had not been occupied for over 60 years. We discovered a wild jewel with tumbling waterfalls along the tumultuous Hickory Nut Creek, overgrown stone walls of a farmhouse and the ruins of an old gristmill. We immediately fell in love for the place. Over the next 10 years, our vision for the land has continually expanded from conserving the wild lands to creating a sustainable community with organic gardens and orchard, hiking trails, renewable energy from the sun and water, green-solar homes and the Laughing Waters Retreat Center.
John Myers and Jane Lawson purchased this cottage in 2004
We don’t feel we 'own' this land. Rather, we feel more aligned as stewards, here to protect it. We are full of wonder and awe at nature’s intricate beauty. Living here is about discovering mysteries and miracles: the springtime sprouting shoots on the forest floor, the blooming of delicate wildflowers, the soaring trees spreading green leaves in a summer canopy, the magical transformation into vibrant fall colors, and the reappearance of the distant mountain vistas in winter.
We have kept the most special places wild for all to enjoy: the cascading streams, tumbling waterfalls, sheer cliffs, and distant vistas. Residents and visitors can enjoy miles of hiking trails on our land, in the adjoining 600 acres of the Florence Nature Preserve, and down the gorge in Chimney Rock State Park.
If you love the outdoors, this is magical place!
We are deep in the heart of the Hickory Nut Gorge, a steep valley carved out of the mountains starting at the continental divide dropping down to Chimney Rock State Park and Lake Lure. From your cottage overlooking two beautiful waterfalls, you can hike up to the top of Little Bearwallow Mountain through 200 acres of natural forest with amazing views. The cottage is part of the Laughing Waters Retreat Center in Hickory Nut Forest. This sustainable eco-community includes organic gardens and apple orchard, conserved lands, renewable energy, and solar-green homes. Guests are welcome to hike, swim, bird watch, enjoy the gardens, go mountain biking, or just relax on the deck and listen to the sound of the rushing water. Enjoy dining in Chimney Rock and Lake Lure, or make your own feast in the cottage kitchen. And we are only 25 minutes from all the music, restaurants and culture in Asheville.

The miles of trails right outside the property were a huge plus. Also, the view with the waterfalls can't be beat! The property mgr was very quick to respond to any calls/texts. My only suggestion would be to have all the outlets and the large overhead light in working order, along with an outside light that could be left on if returning after dark. And possibly some brief instructions on how to operate the heater with the remote control.
This was a very quiet, peaceful isolated spot and I would recommend it or stay here again myself.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the cabin; it was exactly what we wanted. The only sounds were of water falling over rocks and the wind through the trees. It was secluded and quiet - no television and not even good radio reception. The cabin had everything we needed for our stay except food which we found at an organic farm down the road and an Ingles within a short drive. We enjoyed hiking and pretty much stayed on the property. We thoroughly enjoyed evenings sitting on the deck sipping a glass of wine. We look forward to returning next year.
The setting of the cabin is terrific but the cabin was not as comfortable as we hoped. We did not realize there was no TV and wanted to see college football. I prefer a firmer mattress and had difficulty sleeping on the bed. Otherwise it was clean and serene and cozy.
The cabin is like a tiny house yet we were so comfortable. The sound of the cascading creek just off the deck working in cadence with the sounds of the various insects was the soothing and relaxing experience I sought and received.
Some closer parking could have been appreciated but I would not let that keep me from staying again. Folks at the lodge consumed all the closest parking.
Spent 5 days at the cabin. The surroundings are beautiful, the gentle song of the stream and breeze of the trees are so enjoyable when sitting in the deck. The cabin is clean and there was plenty of room for the both of us. The location was great, between Asheville and Chimney Rock. Plenty of trails right out of the cabin. Highly recommend Laughing Waters.
A wonderful place to collect your thoughts and refuel your mind and body. We would definately return!
