The cottage was exactly what we were looking for. Excellent location, by a beautiful & quiet pond, yet not too far from Camden. We enjoyed kayaking & swimming in the pond. The cottage itself is very well equipped, and the size was perfect for us (family of five). We could not have picked a better place!
Really enjoy the outside area which includes the deck, fire pit and dock. The kayaks and canoe were used every day and helped with the number of bass caught each day. Four inch jerk baits and top water plugs worked the best. Morning sun rise from the deck and dock were amazing and the Loons sang to us all night. The chicks hatched while we were there and rode on the backs of their parents when we paddled by. The house met our needs for the group of two couples as this is a true cottage and that is what we wanted. We were close to the big city of Camden for sailing ( Schooner Olad) and eating lunch out and also for shopping. We have stayed in Camden several times, but now that we know where Hobbs pond is, we will be going there to stay and visit the town when we want. We stayed 6-18 thru 25-2016. Bass sizes 8" to 4 lb. 1 fifteen inch brown trout. Would stay again in the future.
My husband and I been here for three years running and it just keeps getting better! This time we came earlier than usual (May instead of July and August) and enjoyed crisp morning sunrises and hikes up the mountain surrounded by the most vibrant greenery. We even caught a glimpse of a sweet little baby fox!
We usually use this week as a time to reset our senses and get back to nature: no television blasting, screens glaring, just us and the loons and the occasional owl. There is a tv and some dvds, but I much prefer, if anything, just throwing on the radio and listening to some oldies.
Unfortunately this past visit my husband was asked to work remotely (he's a software engineer) and was able to use his phone- which had pretty strong service- to create a wireless connection, and so was able to complete his project while we dipped our toes in the lake!
The sound of the loons greets you in the morning and at night while having a drink on the deck. It is a very tranquil setting on a pond with limited boat access and people. We had most meals at home in the newly renovated kitchen and breakfast and lunch on the deck. Reading every night in that relaxed setting was divine. You are only a few miles from Camden, Maine but away from the crowds. It was lovely to tour and take long walks all around the area and then to come home to the peace and quiet.
The cottage is exactly as I expected from the photos and description. The place is homey and comfortable; nothing fancy, just the way I like it to relax by the water. There are lots of points of interest to visit within 30 minute drive; also easy day trips to further destinations. Loved watching wildlife such as huge pond turtles and hummingbirds. Only drawback was that there is no privacy on the second level which is like a bunk room and open to the first floor. The kayaks and canoe were great fun! Also enjoyed evening fires at the outside fireplace. Would definitely book again, hopefully for a longer stay!
We had a great week here this summer. This was our first VRBO/Home Away rental and we couldn't be happier. The house was exactly as advertised and we found the owner and the rental agent to be very responsive and helpful.
I would note that the one missing point from the description was the propane grill. It is not listed as one of the amenities but there is one available to use.
So here are a few of the highlights of our stay:
The house was clean, comfortable and well stocked. We were ready for a week of "unplugged" but we were pleasantly surprised by good cell phone reception.
Hobbs Pond is crystal clear and deep. There were so many loons, swimming by, calling, we even saw one carrying a baby on her back. Two bald eagles flew by and stopped in the white pine across the pond from the house. We swam, kayaked, canoed and did plenty of fishing (and catching). The house even had the pot and lobster crackers we needed for the obligatory Maine lobster dinner. There were board/card games for the few gray days we had too.
As for the surrounding areas, we explored Hope, Camden, Rockport and Rockland. All were worth the visit. Hope Elephants was very interesting. There is a Hannaford grocery store in Camden for anything you can't get at the Hope general store. Camden was great for ice cream and shopping. We visited Andre the Seal in Rockport. Our favorite was Rockland. We hired Captain Wotten to take us lobstering and had a great tour of the harbor as well. We kept returning for the art galleries, food and to see the harbor seals.
Now we are looking forward to next year!
