About Dale Justus

I was born and raised in the Hendersonville area of NC, and have spent nearly all my life in the state. My favorite part of the state has always been and forever will be, the mountains.

Dale Justus purchased this house in 2007

Why Dale Justus chose High Country & Blue Ridge Mountains

When my wife and I started our search for a mountain retreat, we visited and fell in love with the Mount Mitchell area early on. After a number of visits and after looking at what seemed like 'hundreds' of potential places in this area, we fell in love with the River's Edge property the moment we saw it.

Our immediate and extended family, and grandchildren have spent hours of enjoyment in this house making unforgettable memories that included a White Christmas, my oldest grandson's first trout on a fly rod, and countless Thanksgiving get together.

My grandchildren like this area so much, that they bring a few friends each year as part of their birthday, and spend a long weekend fishing, tubing, swimming, and horseback riding. It's become a tradition with them. You know it's a special place if it can get teenage boys to give up cell phones and Xbox for a weekend.

This property holds a special place for me, and I hope you will find that it does the same for you and your family.

What makes this house unique

Boy, where do I start? We fell in love with this place for so many reasons:

River front - 300 feet of private river frontage makes for awesome fishing, tubing, and wading. Just down the river from our house, the Mount Mitchell Golf course beings to maintain the river. Although a special permit is required to fish there, that area has some world class, trophy brown and rainbow trout.

Relaxation - This is an area and house where you can choose just how 'engaged' you want to be. Should you decide, you can step away from technology for a bit and embrace the outdoors, of, if you prefer stay connected. I should warn you though, you won't find a better house for a nice afternoon nap with the sound of the river running gently in the background.

Activities - There are so many unique and interesting activities to do in this area that it really never gets boring.

Master shower - The master shower is certainly not anything that you'd expect in a mountain getaway. Wall to ceiling Italian tile with a sitting area and dual European shower heads.

Great Weekend in the Mountains

  • 5 of 5

I rented this property to enjoy a weekend with some friends in the mountains. It really met our expectations. The property is made up really lovely, enough room for 10 people and the surrounding area is perfect to relax, go hiking and have a barbeque. To communicate with the owner was easy and he responded to every single question we had. We felt really good renting this house and had a wonderful weekend in an amazing area.

Very comfortable home in a great location with a well-equipped kitchen.

  • 5 of 5

This property is in an excellent location for nature lovers. The river in front of the property is serene and beautiful. We enjoyed the fire pit that overlooks the river and also enjoyed putting our tailgating chairs in the flow of the river while we read.

The house is lovely and extremely comfortable. Please know that it is 30 minutes to a grocery so it is best to stock up on your way in. When you go into Burnsville, check out the Blind Squirrel Brewery for great food and locally made, delicious beers.

The house sits adjacent to Pisgah National Forest and there is excellent trout fishing all around. We used Brown's Fishing (Jake) as guides and they were wonderful. Mt. Mitchell (highest peak in NC) is a 15 minute drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway and the trails there are diverse in both level of challenge and atmosphere.

Mt. Mitchell golf course is a two minute walk from the property. While we are not golfers, this would be a great perk for those who are.

We had a small hiccup upon arrival and Brad and Dale (the host's son and the host himself) handled it beautifully. They are super nice, responsive hosts who truly care that you enjoy your stay at their mountain home. A big thank you to both of them for making our stay super special and for offering their home for a fantastic escape from the Columbia, SC heat!

This place was awesome!

  • 5 of 5

What a great cabin! Exactly what we were looking for ... location and amenities. We love staying on the river, being close to the golf course and having a great deck to relax on. The rooms were comfortable and the master bedroom was huge. We will definitely come back!

Riverside Perfection

  • 5 of 5

This wonderful riverside jewel is exactly as described. It is perfect for a large family to share wading, splashing and fishing in the beautiful clear, clean South Toe River or relaxing on the lounge chairs on the large deck that overlooks that same S Toe River. The master bedroom is extra large, has a comfy king bed & extra large bathroom. The kitchen is open to living & dining area with open view to outdoor dining on the deck, very helpful when games are played at the table on the covered part of the deck. Home is clean, owner is very responsive. There is a separate well stocked laundry room, a large storage area downstairs, kitchen has newer appliances w/ ice machines, tons of storage, dishes equipment. This is a perfect rental for a large group gathering for fun, food & fishing and/or golf. It is obvious that this is not just a house but a home that the owners love and care for! We hope to make our summer visit an annual event and maybe a Thanksgiving in the near future. Also our group was extra large so w rented the house next door giving us 3 more bedrooms for a total of 7. The location close to Mt Mitchell Golf Club and it has a very nice casual restaurant although we mostly cooked at home on the gas grill provided. Enjoy your visit. We certainly did.

Great vacation for all

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this lovely home from July 1-7, 2017...obviously over the July 4th holiday. The house was fully furnished with all that we needed, with previous guests even leaving some seasonings and laundry detergent, which helped greatly. The highlight of our stay was the bubbling, clear, cold South Toe River right down a short path from the house. Our property was the only one with a flat rock beach, clear of weeds! Our 6 and 8 yr old granddaughters loved playing in the water and getting their sea legs with the current - even tubing short distances when the water level came up after a few days rain. Our son tried his first attempt at fly fishing and even taught his little daughters the way to throw the line. No trout were caught sadly but the neighbors on both sides of us did catch a lot of fish. We enjoyed the fire pit down by the rocky beach and had s'mores 2 nights of our stay, while watching the girls chase fireflies along the path. We used the gas grill on the porch several times and it cooked beautifully. Speaking of the porch, it was the perfect spot to relax, read, or just listen to the river any time of day. The Mt. Mitchell golf course is challenging and in good condition. We loved our hike up Roaring Creek Falls just a short distance from the house. We drove into Ashville to the Biltmore one day over the Blue Ridge Parkway. Two things to be aware of - you are out in the rural NC mountains so phone and wifi are not always working. And, it is a 30 minute drive to the nearest grocery store, so plan ahead..haha. The owner was very pleasant to deal with and always available to answer our few questions. We highly recommend this property.

Great place tucked along the S. Toe RIver

  • 5 of 5

Great house on the S. Toe River! Plenty of room, just my wife, 2 kids (13 and 9) and our dog. The house is just down the road from the Black Mountain Campground, which is where the trail up Mount Mitchell begins. No issues with the kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms, gas grill, wi-fi-- everything advertised works and is in good condition. The S Toe River is literally in the backyard and you can fly fish there, wade up or down stream; we did catch small rainbows (but generally standard size for the area) right behind the house. The house is great if you want to camp, but maybe don't have the time to get everything ready, or someone in your group isn't really into camping-- you can really have everything you would camping, but have the house to retreat into when you want. Also a good base if you have a diverse party-- say home-bodies and hikers... the hikers can camp/walk for a couple days, while the home-bodies remain at the house. Keep in mind the roads are slow going in the area, the Blue Ridge Parkway is a great drive to Asheville, but it'll take you about an hour; same if you head north to Boone, it's close but still a bit of a drive based on the roads. Best bet is to take about everything you need with you to the house so you don't have to run to Burnsville, or anywhere else, for any necessities. There's more than enough to do just along the Toe River Road-- trails, fishing, wading in the river, etc. The deck is also situated quite nice for just sitting and doing absolutely nothing but hearing the burbling Toe River. There is a fire pit (store bought kind), and also a rock fire pit just off the Toe River, the owners have plenty of wood already cut/split also. I'd absolutely stay here again and would recommend to anyone.
