Austin Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

This bright and open 500 square foot cottage, sitting in a tree-shaded backyard includes a bedroom, vaulted ceilings in dining/living area, hand-made oak cabinetry, kitchen, bathroom with unique redwood shower which is open to the sky.

We are located 1/2 block from Hemphill Park just north of UT in a lovely, older neighborhood with large pecan trees, a creek, grassy areas for jogging, frisbee, football, basketball, and dog walking.

It is right off the north drag of the UT campus walking distance to restaurants, coffee shops, bars, music venues, live theater, a local gym, grocery stores, video stores, shopping, museums, bike trails, with easy access to UT shuttle and city bus lines.

Why the Owner Chose North University: Year Purchased: 1986

Gene built this house himself originally to use as an office because with 4 children and a home business we were bursting at the seams. Our children are grown and gone, and with such a great city, neighborhood, street, it seems like the perfect place to share with others.

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage: The great benefit we enjoy is the completely central location. We are close to an amazing array of interesting places and activities. We are also a 5 minute drive from both IH-35 and Mopac making access to the greater Austin and Texas areas as convenient as possible.

Nevertheless, we live on a beautiful, peaceful street with a feeling of being removed from the hustle and bustle of the city. The cottage itself is beautifully constructed with built in oak cabinets and furnished with antiques, a king sized bed, and a homey atmosphere. A screened in garden house is a peaceful, private place to read and enjoy the outdoors.

About Patsy and Gene Tankersley

We bought our 86 year old house in 1986, and completely remodeled it. The cottage in our large backyard was built by Gene, architecturally in keeping with the original house. We came to Austin to go to the University of Texas, have lived in this neighborhood over 40 years. We love this area and think it's the best place to live in the entire state.

Cosy Cottage

  • 4 of 5

Great location, close to the university, and only a few minutes further to downtown. The cottage was comfortable, well-equipped and perfect for a short stay. The outdoor shower was fun. The A/C system is a bit loud for light sleepers, but the garden location is quiet and pretty. The house dogs are friendly and very well-behaved. They share the garden with the cottage and seem to love visitors. The owners are kind and welcoming. It was a nice place to stay.

Charming & Well-appointed Cottage in N Central ATX

  • 5 of 5

What a pleasant surprise to find this adorable and charming cottage setting in the middle of North Central Austin! I spent two nights (June 21-22, 2016) here and my only disappointment is that I didn't make plans to stay longer! After my first night, I wished I had booked a few more days. The cottage is the perfect size for one person or a couple, and it is also pet friendly. (My little Yorkie enjoyed meeting the two very friendly resident dogs, Cotton & Motley.) The cottage décor is lovely and it is perfectly well-appointed with exactly what you need. The outdoor shower was so refreshing after a long summer day. The cute kitchen is equipped with full size appliances, dishes, cooking utensils, pots & pans, wine glasses, coffee maker - everything you need for eating in. But with all the great restaurants within walking distance, you'll probably go out!

The location is fantastic. I was amazed at how peaceful and quiet the neighborhood was, considering its close proximity to busy Guadalupe. The cottage is very private and surrounded by beautiful gardens, yet once you exit through the back gate, you'll find yourself within walking distance to Spider House, Trudy's, Ruby's BBQ, Milto's, Wheatsville Coop (grocery store), and more. It was great walking my dog through this lovely neighborhood, which is also half a block from Hemphill Park. It is also very close to the Triangle (Maudie's Tex Mex!).

My thanks to Gene & Patsy, who were very kind and helpful hosts. It was wonderful to meet them both. I look forward to my next visit! -Dorie G & Howie

Clean & Great Location

  • 4 of 5

We just wanted a quick getaway weekend. Property is in a great location. You can walk to many things & drive to most popular Austin sites is 15-20 min. Very pet friendly with a dog park a block away. Would stay again. Only downside was air conditioner was loud. (But more important it worked!!!)

Mostly positive review - some recommendations

  • 4 of 5

This VRBO offered privacy, cleanliness, adequate space for two people, off street parking, a stroll able neighborhood, easy access to shopping, restaurants, etc. and the university. We loved the outdoor shower and enjoyed the dogs, neither of which we knew about until after we booked the property.

We stayed for six days and recommend the following: linens and towels need to be changed every three days, the gas stove was difficult to light, the light and fan over the stove was not working, and the countertop toaster oven was not functioning correctly, These appliances need attention.

We would recommend this property.

Absolutely delightful!

  • 5 of 5

We headed to Austin for a weekend getaway and wanted something different than the usual hotel stay, and I must say, we will definitely return to this cozy cottage. It was clean, comfortable and so relaxing. We slept with the windows open--very peaceful and refreshing. We visited with the owner, Patsy and she is truly a sweetheart.

A beautiful oasis in Urban Austin!

  • 4 of 5

Our dog, Lacey, husband and myself had a lovely stay in this cottage for several days in late March. I particularly appreciated the large yard, the welcoming committee of two very sweet and well-socialized dogs, and the exceptional linens on the bed. Ok. That last one is a pet peeve of mine. The king sized bed was quite comfortable, and the kitchen nicely appointed. The cottage is also an easy walk to Central Market and the adjacent park, shops, food, and the UT campus. The AC worked well and quickly, and we also got to use the furnace (also worked well), since it was, after all, spring in Austin! My only serious concern was that the outdoor shower is really tough to use when it's cold out. I typically love outdoor showers, but using it in 30-something weather was a tough go. That said, we managed (with mostly afternoon showers), and this place would be absolutely perfect in the summer. We also so appreciate a place that "gets" well-mannered dogs, such as our Gordon Setter mix (translation: not small) dog. We plan to stay here again in the future!
