Why the Owner Chose North University: Year Purchased: 1986
Gene built this house himself originally to use as an office because with 4 children and a home business we were bursting at the seams. Our children are grown and gone, and with such a great city, neighborhood, street, it seems like the perfect place to share with others.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage: The great benefit we enjoy is the completely central location. We are close to an amazing array of interesting places and activities. We are also a 5 minute drive from both IH-35 and Mopac making access to the greater Austin and Texas areas as convenient as possible.
Nevertheless, we live on a beautiful, peaceful street with a feeling of being removed from the hustle and bustle of the city. The cottage itself is beautifully constructed with built in oak cabinets and furnished with antiques, a king sized bed, and a homey atmosphere. A screened in garden house is a peaceful, private place to read and enjoy the outdoors.
We bought our 86 year old house in 1986, and completely remodeled it. The cottage in our large backyard was built by Gene, architecturally in keeping with the original house. We came to Austin to go to the University of Texas, have lived in this neighborhood over 40 years. We love this area and think it's the best place to live in the entire state.
Patsy and Gene Tankersley purchased this cottage in 1986

Private and quiet, pretty and tranquil, walking distance to lots of fun things.
My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights when he was having surgery at the nearby St. David's Hospital. The cottage was a great location to the hospital in a quiet, yet central neighborhood. Patsy was great at communication and quick to respond to any questions I had. There were two sweet dogs that met us at the gate every time.
The cottage is in the large backyard behind the main house. There is a bedroom, a small kitchen, a sitting area, and a bathroom with only an outdoor shower. The shower is completely walled in and private, but if you're not expecting an outdoor shower, this is your fair warning.
The only reason I'm not giving a straight up 5 star review is that the HVAC system is a bit loud. We had the furnace on the first night and it cycled through about every 45 minutes. Unless you're a deep sleeper, you'll notice it. Same with the A/C, as it's the same unit. Bottom line: bring some earplugs and you'll probably be fine.
This cozy cottage is the perfect place for a couple visiting Austin. We came to spend Thanksgiving with two of our sons who live nearby. Everything was comfortable and well organized, and Patsy and Gene had thought of all the little things that make for a good stay: extra coffee in the freezer, directions to many local restaurants and stores, and plenty of solitude. The dogs were an added bonus: both friendly and ready to greet us on our return, and they got along well with our own elderly pup. The outdoor shower was fine, even with temps in the 60s during the day (not terribly great water pressure, but turning up the thermostat on the hot water heater solved that problem)--it seemed perfect for an Austin visit! We definitely hope to return soon and will look forward to staying here. Thank you for a fantastic holiday stay!
Lovely accommodations, great location. Quite charming, including hosts, their dogs, butterfly garden and the cottage!
What a fun stay in Austin! The location was perfect- close to downtown and near the University campus. The cottage is perfect for a couple- quiet and everything you need. A great king size bed and the outdoor shower was fun!
Overall I thought the home was fantastic. Nestled in a wonderfully landscaped backyard, it was never short on garden views. The cottage felt open and airy and quite comfortable. The attention to home comforts were fantastic. An actual kitchen with actual utensils and amenities was very thoughtful. The cottage was clean and well cared for. Anything you could possibly want to eat is within a short walking distance. (1-2 blocks). I would absolutely stay here again when in Austin.
