About Barbara

We are a family of avid skiers and snowboarders that love the mountains! We also love to travel, which is why our cabins have a little bit of an international flair. We're authors and like to do our writing with a mountain view (look for our book Living Abroad in China at bookstores and on Amazon to learn more about us). In addition to renting our 5 Wrightwood cabins, we also have "real jobs" down the hill as professors.

Barbara purchased this house in 2010

Why Barbara chose Inland Empire

We bought this cabin to stay in when our teens wanted to ski/snowboard, especially since they are now doing competitions. We decided to rent it out when we weren't staying there and quickly discovered that we really enjoy sharing our cabin with other people who love the mountains as much as we do. Now we live full time in Wrightwood so we're available to help guests when needed.

What makes this house unique

We fell in love with the wrap-around deck, the peek-a-boo mountain views, the proximity to hiking trails. After looking at lots of places with too much depressing wood paneling, we loved the light and airy open floor plan of this cabin. When we stay here, we always grill out on the oversized gas grill, enjoy meals on the deck, and relax in the sauna.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a wonderful retreat you have in your warm and cozy home! What a pleasure it was for us to drink in the beauty of the mountains and hear the sound of singing birds. Thank you for opening this beautiful cabin. It truly was the highlight of our trip from Minnesota. May God bless you richly for your delightful haven of rest!

Peaceful Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved staying at this Little Pines cabin. Very peaceful! It's so quiet up there that I slept longer and deeper than I have in a long time. It's ideal for getting away from the stresses of daily life in Los Angeles -- I'll be back for sure! Owners were easygoing and friendly. Cute little town, too -- we recommend the new microbrewery. Craft beers for cheap!

Clean, quiet, felt like home away from home.

  • 5 of 5

I opted to stay here instead of a hotel while working in the area. I loved staying here! Clean, quiet, beautiful surroundings and everything as advertised, very comfortable. Customer service was prompt and friendly. I would recommend this place to anyone. I will definitely stay here again when working in the area again.

Dirty and misleading.

  • 1 of 5

As we arrive my husband made a walk thru and noticed a few things broken and dirty but because we had our 3 kids and arrival at night we try to make it work. We had plan our whole weekend around this cabins wish is misleading on the description. First it's not kid friendly the backyard as you walk out the deck the step was so high my 4 year old fell so many time because of being so high, also a lots of weeds or dead grass grown over in the rocks that made difficult to see wish made my kids fall. The backyard is useless for kids. The BBQ was so discussing and dirty, first we had to move it from the side yard to the deck which it's difficult to move on that big step on the deck. Another thing that bother me so much was the beds they were so uncomfortable even the bunk beds the kids sleep, they complain about the squeaky noise which made difficult for them to sleep, and the main bed which is frame by plywood and a mattress on top with a foam which did not even work it was so hard because its not proper bed. I think to what I paid we should have nice comfortable beds to sleep. The coffee machine was so old it had mold and calcium deposited, there was a new one in the garage which I open and use it because we could not use the other one, but why wait for me to open one change it or clean out the coffee machine as soon as you see mold and calcium. My biggest problem has been with the owners Barbara and Stu there was a broken ottoman on the master bedroom when we arrive which we did not make a big deal like everything else because we want to make the best of everything. After 17 days from check out I email and txt Barbara about asking about my return deposit that I have not receive they said they are not going to return my deposit because we broke the ottoman which we did not understand, it was already broken. Why am I going to pay for something we did not break. My question is why they did not email or text me that same Sunday I check out why wait 17 days after I reach out for my deposit to let me know? It not right what they did to us! The should have communicated to us sooner. Never again! Please be careful when you walk in check everything and let them know if something is broken as soon as possible because if not there going to keep your deposit.

Owner's Response: First let me say that these guests filed a complaint with HomeAway, and after HomeAway investigated they not only sided with us, they actually apologized to us that we had to deal with this. These guests broke an antique ottoman. Not slightly; it was broken into multiple pieces, like perhaps their kids were jumping on it from the bed. It wasn't broken when they checked in and it was literally in pieces when they left. And it wasn't just this; in general they treated our home with disrespect, including taking things from a locked personal cabinet. We do request that guests inform us if they find things broken or not sufficiently cleaned so that we can deal with whatever is broken or send a cleaner in to make things right. If it's a problem that can't be easily fixed, we can move guests to another available cabin of ours if necessary. We are committed to providing a good experience for our guests but we need to be able to verify if there really are problems. These guests told us and our other guest who stayed in the cabin next to them how much they enjoyed their stay and expressed no complaints before the deposit issue came up. And they chatted with that other guest because their kids were spending so much time playing in that yard they claim is not kid friendly. We return deposits within a week of checkout if there are no issues. In this case, it took some time to do the research to find the same antique to assess its value and cost of repair. We don't like to keep deposits and try to be as fair as possible. We had not even resolved with them how much of the deposit we would return or keep, if any, when they posted this review. In 6 years of hosting thousands of guests across our 5 properties, we can count on one hand the number of times we've had to keep someone's deposit. This is the first time anyone destroyed a piece of our furniture. As for their complaints about the bed, everyone is different in what they prefer. We have many returning guests and long-term stays, which simply wouldn't happen if our place was truly as unpleasant as they claim. The bottom line is they ruined an antique and don't want to be responsible for the damage they did, so they're trying to get back at us with a bad review.

Wonderful Weekend!

  • 5 of 5

We had such a nice relaxing weekend at Barbara & Stu's Cabin! It was clean, cozy, had all the amenities and comfort of home! We enjoyed playing board games they had available and enjoyed sitting by the fire in the living area! We cooked a nice meal on the BBQ and enjoyed every bit of our mini getaway! We absolutely recommend staying at one of their cabins in Wrightwood!

Easter weekend

  • 5 of 5

Getting away from home is always nice. We really loved the little pines cabin. We spent the weekend here with our kids and they LOVED IT. there is a patio that wraps around the house and a tire swing they couldn't wait to wake up in the morning and play on. It's always stressful bringing our 7 month old anywhere but she slept comfortably. Everything worked out so smoothly. The Easter bunny hid the eggs all around the property. The kids had so much fun. It's such a cozy little house! We didn't get to spend much time in the house because we were up there having our wedding and Easter but we will definitely consider going again one of these days. It was so relaxing!

Five miles from Mountain High Snowboard and Ski Resort and just 90 minutes from Los Angeles. The mountain hamlet of Wrighwood (2 miles from the cabins) features antique shops and galleries, quaint eateries and down-home pubs, coffee shops and bakeries. Tubing and snow play abound in winter weather. In warmer months the hiking is gorgeous (the town is on the Pacific Crest Trail) and trails can be reached easily from the cabin, plus nearby fishing, swimming lake, and all kinds of outdoor activities beneath the towering pine trees. The town hosts several fun events each year, such as classic car shows, chili cook-offs, Christmas caroling, lots of live music, and the like. A small town that feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Other Activities: snow play, tubing, Shopping, Snowboarding, Wildlife Viewing.

Ski: Mountain High offers some of the best snowboarding, skiing, and tubing around. With three resorts, there's plenty for all skill levels, from bunny slopes for beginners to plenty of 'park' features for those with advanced skill in rails, boxes, jumps, and the like. Home to professional snowboarders and frequent competitions, tournaments, and events.
