I am retired Custom home builder from Chesapeake Va. but more importantly a lover of mountains and an out door enthusiast!
My wife and I decided the mountains of West Virginia because of our love for nature!
We moved here in 2008 and have been enjoying it ever since!
I spent over 30 plus years building custom dream homes for my clients in the Tidewater area of Va.
We are now at the season in our life where we want to experience our dreams come to pass. Our dream is to simply enjoy the beautiful mountains of WV and share it with as many people as we can!
We spend our time sharing our love for God's creation with family, friends and guests here in the Canaan valley area of WV!
We like to ski (both down hill and x-country), hike, bike, Kayak and go hunting. However; we also just love to relax and take in the amazing sunsets between the mountains in addition to stargaze!
On our many hikes to waterfalls and streams our beagle, Bluebell, comes along too. She even treads through the snow along side us in the winter when we go x-country skiing or snow shoeing!
Our days are filled entertaining family and friends who have taken time off from their busy lives to visit.
We cherish the time we are able spend with them by showing off wild, wonderful WV!
We chose to have a cozy cabin here because of the amazing views of the mountains. It is positioned so you can enjoy both the sunrise and the sunset!
The location is also close to two ski resorts; Canaan Valley and Timberline. It is also close to Canaan Valley State park and Blackwater falls state park where you can hike many trails, go mountain biking, horseback riding, golfing, rock climbing, and hunting!
Although we think the best part is taking in the natural beauty of nature all around quiet and relaxing. A place to breath in the fresh mountain air!
This is a vacation spot where you really can relax and get refreshed before heading back to work.
The sunsets and star gazing rejuvenates the soul by giving us strength, peace and balance for the road ahead.
The cabin boasts of its views of the mountains and a peaceful setting.
Most of the activities such as skiing both downhill and x-country are approx. 7-10 miles away.
Horseback riding and hiking trails close as well.
We encourage people to relax around the real wood burning fireplace inside the cabin or outside by the campfire.
Star gazing is prime here in this part of WV! This is due to the fact it has been claimed to be one of the "darkest spots" on the east coast!
We certainly appreciate the comments left by our guests and would like to add that we have had in the past people on motorcycles visit us and had no problems, however the road is dirt and gravel and there is one hairpin turn, we like to call it, at the top of "Cherry Ridge".
We are not bikers but would also like to caution people with bikes of the nature of our roads.
This beautiful couple did have difficulty, and we apologized for their experience on our road and offered them a free night stay if they chose to come back.
Last night however we had eight bikers arrive at a large cabin here in "Cherry Ridge". We asked them this morning how the road was with bikes. They said "You have to be careful but it was fine." So with that being said please travel here on bikes at your own risk.
Four wheel drive is not necessary in the summer:)
This cabin would meet just about anyone's needs and vacation interests. From the beginning, Dan and Barb, the cabin's owners, were gracious and welcoming. They gave us a "tour" of the amenities and then so respectfully left us with privacy. Dan even prepared the fireplace - all we had to do was light the paper! The house was also incredibly well stocked and every room of the house had everything I would have at home. All we needed was our food and had absolutely everything else. For those who love the outdoors, it was perfect. Hiking out the front door or a short drive. Warmer weather would allow for stream walking, tubing and longer hikes. The cabin is on lots of land to bring outdoor games for families. Indoor and outdoor fire places and a large hot tub add lots of romance if that's what you are looking for also. I can say this place is perfect! We will absolutely look to return.
Everything you could want or need for a mountain escape was provided! The hot tub and fireplace add to the wonderful views, making this a prime spot to visit any time of the year. We are already checking our calendars for a return trip this summer!
Thanks, Dan and Barbara, for another great weekend at your Sunset Cabin!
We had rainy weather almost the whole time we were there, but the cabin is still great and has everything you need. It has just about all the cookware and dishware you could need, including glass wine glasses for inside and plastic wine glasses for outside. We enjoyed the hot tub, the clever decorations, the covered porch area with outdoor blankets to enjoy the crisp fresh air and everything else about this cabin. And we noticed and enjoyed the new supply of movies!
Thanks, and we can't wait to be back!
Steve and Rachel
We couldn't ask for a better weekend away from home. Sunset Cabin was an amazing get away. The scenery, peacefulness, wild life, sunsets, star gazing, and relaxation was the best experience we have had. The cabin was equipped with everything we needed and more. The fire pit in the yard to the hot tub on the deck to the furniture on the front porch to watch the sunset and enjoy the view, this is all we needed for the weekend. Dan and Barb were the best! They truly make this a home away from home and one my wife and I did not want to leave. Dan and Barb gave us ideas on what there is to do, where to go, and made sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. My wife and I couldn't have asked for a more relaxing and enjoyable weekend. We are definitely looking forward to our next trip to Sunset Cabin!
We can't say enough great things about this cabin and the owners. The cabin is equipped with everything you could possibly need and we found that we over packed because we didn't think they would have this or that. The place was super clean and well taken care of. The owners showed us around and even had some fresh veggies from their veggie garden on site that we made into a wonderful home made pizza. The owners are wonderful people who couldn't have been any nicer. The views from this cabin were spectacular. The sunsets were one of a kind, and the stars at night were just unbelievable. The hot tub was amazing after a long day of hiking around the black water falls. We even just took a hike down the stone drive to the "main road" and back up one day on our trip which turned into quite the walk back up. The drive up to the cabin is a stone drive and can be steep. I can see why in the winter time they recommend 4 wheel drive. I would recommend this property to anyone who is looking for a peaceful time away from the hustle and bustle of the city life. Don't pass this place up you will regret it. Thank you to the owners for letting us stay here and we will be back and next time for even longer.
This cabin has everything you need and feels like home with a beautiful view of the mountains and night sky. I've never seen so many stars! The hospitality is wonderful. The master bed is very comfortable, the hot tub on the deck has a beautiful view. Great hiking in the area, just such a relaxing place. I would definitely come back to this cabin and highly recommend this as a rental if you are looking for a quiet, peaceful place to visit.
In the winter we require our guests to have either 4 wheel drive or snow chains for their vehicles...thank you!
