Located in the Welshpool section of Campobello, overlooking 'Harbour Delutre,' stands our cabin, which we have named 'Gull Cove' because of the abundant amount of seagulls who visit each day, along with all of the water fowl. The cabin can sleep 5. Our cabin has two bedrooms, each with their own full bath. One bedroom has a king size bed, the other twin beds and a fold out couch. Both bedrooms have doors leading outside and both overlook the cove. The cabin is bright and sunny with a beautiful view from every room in the house, as well as our very special screened porch. The porch is equipped with a table and chairs for outdoor dining, as well as rocking chairs to relax any time of the day. The living room is very cozy and has double doors that open to the porch. The property has a 30-40ft drop to the water therefore not suitable for young children unless accompanied by an adult at all times. Small well behaved pet welcome. By choice, there is no TV or Internet. When there, our choice is to leave the worries of the world behind us, enjoy the beauty that surrounds us, catch up on reading or just sit, enjoy and allow our minds and bodies to relax. There is accommodation for DVD's, with large diverse library of movies. Also a variety of CD's, books, magazines, and board games. The kitchen is fully equipped including electric range, microwave, fridge, dishwasher, washer and dryer. There is also a charcoal BBQ, which is stored on the porch and must be moved outside for cooking. The cabin is in a private setting well off the street and surrounded by trees as well as the lovely views as mentioned. The cabin does have radiant heat if needed. Cell phone reception is poor to non-existent. We do provide a land phone for emergency use only as we have a large family back in the states. Calls from the land phone to anywhere on the island and to Lubec are no charge, however, calling anywhere outside of that area is extremely expensive. Therefore we would require a $50.00 phone use fee, which will be returned in full if phone is not used outside of the Campobello/Lubec area. If the phone is used outside of that area, we will rebate accordingly. There is positively NO SMOKING in cabin or anywhere on property. We've grown weary of the constant clean up of cigarette butts.
We are Hiram and Valerie Brown. We reside in Rockland, Maine except when we are in the land of enchantment at our cabin. Hiram has been a life-long resident of Rockland, Camden, Rockport area and I, having been born and raised in Long Branch, NJ, moved to Maine in 1974 continuing my work in the medical field as manager of the chemotherapy unit at our local hospital for 25 years. Hiram continues as a master electrician. Our grown children and grandchildren reside in Maine, NH, NY. During the years since we built our cabin, we've spent many happy hours enjoying all that it has to offer, as well as the spectacular beauty of the island and its residents. We continue to go to the island often, even through the winter. We enjoy the American Thanksgiving holiday there each year with friends from home and friends from the island. We have no doubt that you will enjoy your vacation in our cabin. We're so happy to share it with you and hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
Valerie Brown purchased this cabin in 2001
Prior to purchasing the land on Campobello, we visited the island at least once a year for several years. In 2001, while staying on the island, one day we just rode around and pulled into this driveway. It opened to the beautiful view of Harbour DeLoutre and we were sold! We found that it was for sale and purchased it. The following year we built the cabin.
We fell in love with the property and then our cabin. The views, the tides, the wild life all spectacular. We have done a great deal of traveling in the states and Europe, but have never found any place that took our breath away like this lovely cottage that we call "Gull Cove" and the gorgeous, refreshing, magical, uncomplicated, island of Campobello.
We've rented many cottages over the years, but none have compared to Gull Cove. On the secluded shores of magical Campobello Island, the "cottage"...actually a house...was well-equipped, very comfortable, and extremely private, yet close to the island"s restaurants, store, and parks. We particularly enjoyed the easy access to the water, where we could sit (chairs are provided) and enjoy our morning coffee and launch our kayaks. We also spent many hours on the spacious screen porch overlooking the cove. The owner, Valerie Brown, was a pleasure to deal with, thus making the entire experience a joy.
I had learned of Campobello Island from reading about Eleanor Roosevelt. I became enchanted with the idea of the place and set out to find a place to stay. Gull Cottage had just what we were looking for. My husband and I spent a lovely week with our pup Sadie whom we knew had borrowed time due to cancer. We created terrific memories there taking her everywhere with us; Head Harbor Light, Roosevelt Provincial Park and trails, Herring Cove, Deer Island ferry and on to St. Andrews. Oh, and those sunsets! What a great place to visit and stay. When we return, it will be to Gull Cottage. Thank you Valerie!
What a wonderful place to stay! We have been coming to the island for almost 40 years and this place was I ever of the best we've stayed at. Definetly booking again!
Finding Gull Cove was a bit of an effort, but well worth it. The gravel roads and surrounding forest are mostly undeveloped. The place is totally private. Watching the tides come in and out was mesmerizing. From the front porch, we saw bald eagles, a woodpecker and, of course, sea gulls. Two rabbits visited every night, too, and hardly seemed bothered by us. We didn't want to leave, but when we did explore the island, we found that we had lucked into what we considered the most beautiful spot. In spite of the seclusion, it is actually very close to the Roosevelt National Park, Herring Cove Park, Family Fisheries and the Deer Island Ferry. The cottage was clean and well-appointed and is larger than the photos indicate. The layout afforded views of the water from all rooms. I immediately ditched the book I brought for one of the ones in the bookshelf. My husband and daughter enjoyed the eclectic selection of movies. If you want to chill, relax and unwind, this is the place. Do bring groceries and beverages.
In reading the other reviews- I can totally agree with everything everyone else has written! Beautiful home, lovely quiet spot- I even saw the reflection of the stars on the cove at night! The home was warm when it got cold and the porch was fabulous on the warm days!Tea with Eleanor was a treat- as was the Eagle Hill Bog walk! We saw whales off the banks of the lighthouse. You can't go wrong with the place!
We have never been disappointed in a rental from Home Away. Gull Cove was no exception, and surely ranks in one of our favorites, if not THE favorite in its category. Valerie and Hiram have put thought, energy, and work into providing every comfort for their guests. Everything was clean. The kitchen is well supplied with cooking equipment, utensils, and appliances. The beds are comfortable with excellent lights for reading, and likewise the greatroom and screened in porch with plenty of seating. Books and DVD's are ample and wide ranging. The owners provided excellent information: directions, arrival and departure checklists, and touring suggestions. The site is private, and the view is gorgeous with the changing light and weather. Although Gull Cove is a modern log cabin, the Island itself is a step back in time. We enjoyed exploring Campobello Island with no crowds or traffic! The music at Fog Fest was great, the Roosevelts' home and 'Tea with Eleanor' was a learning experience, East Quoddy Light was a challenge for us but well worth the effort. Fortunately the border wasn't a challenge: one to three cars each time we crossed! We recommend Gull Cove to anyone looking for a change of pace getaway!
This log cabin style cottage is located on the unique and spectacular island of Campobello and offers glorious sunrises and sunsets. Witness foggy days or nights and go to sleep with the lull of fog horns around and near the island. Observe seals, a large variety of ducks, great blue herons, eagles, as well as many other varieties of birds from your rocking chair on the long screened porch. You can also enjoy meals and/or beverages on the screened porch which has an outdoor dining set. On your computer, type in Bay of Fundy to learn about the highest tides in the world and then come to Campobello and see for yourself. Tide rises and falls 8-10ft per hour. It's truly amazing to watch. Attractions include the former summer home of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, now a museum and within the 2800 acre Roosevelt Campobello International Park, which is supported by both USA and Canada, the only one of its kind in the world. A new feature is "Tea With Eleanor," highly popular with locals and guests as well. There are numerous hiking trails within the park with breathtaking views of the ocean and with benches and picnic facilities throughout. While a guest on this splendid island, enjoy friendly, very helpful locals, visit beautiful mile long Herring Cove, which has a sand and pebble beach for swimming or beach combing, play at the 9 hole provincial golf course located high above the sea with breathtaking views. Enjoy kayaking, canoeing, bicycling, hiking, fishing, bird watching, whale watching tours on Passamaquoddy Bay, gift shops, Head Harbor Lighthouse, where at low tide you can walk on the bottom of the sea. There are also trails and picnic tables at the lighthouse location. You will be asked for a $5.00 preservation donation and $10.00 to tour the lighthouse. Stop in and enjoy a delicious meal at Family Fisheries, pick up a picnic lunch or ice cream from their take out. A new restaurant on island, "Fireside," for wonderful food, licensed bar, and spectacular views of the bay and Eastport, Maine. You can ferry across the bay to Eastport, Maine and visit charming shops and restaurants, or drive over the FDR bridge to Lubec, Maine, also with many interesting shops and restaurants and a candy shop located just out of the center with mouthwatering chocolates and beautiful handmade clothing and jewelry as well as other interesting and unysual items. In Lubec you will also find West Quoddy Head light, the eastern most point of land in the USA, also with hiking paths and picnic tables. There are no gas stations located on Campobello, however, there is one in Lubec. There is also a medical facility located in Lubec. Most of all, and our personal favorite, is the peace and tranquility of Campobello Island, as well as the spectacular beauty, and the helpful, warm, and wonderful people. You will find our cottage, "Gull Cove" a welcome hideaway from our harried, electronic world. So, whether you choose to remain at the cabin or go out and about, your home away from home will always welcome you back offering beautiful surroundings, comfort, peace, tranquility, spectacular views, as well as non-stop entertainment with our friends of the sea and air, not to mention the amazing tides.
