About Valerie Brown
We are Hiram and Valerie Brown. We reside in Owls Head, Maine except when we are in the land of enchantment at our cabin. Hiram, a life-long resident of Coastal Maine and Valerie a transplant from NJ in 1974. Our grown children and grandchildren reside in Maine, NH, NY. During the years since we built our cabin, we've spent many happy hours enjoying all that it has to offer, as well as the spectacular beauty just outside of our door and also throughout this enchanting island. Additionally we enjoy the friendliness, sincerity, and warmth of the island residents. We are only approximately 3 hours from the island and therefore are able to enjoy it throughout the year. Winters, of course, are cold, however, the radiant heat keeps us comfortable. We enjoy the American Thanksgiving holiday there each year with friends from home and friends from the island. We have no doubt that you will enjoy your vacation in our cabin. We're delighted to share Gull Cove with our guests and feel quite certain that you too will enjoy your time spent there.
Valerie Brown purchased this Cottage in 2001
Why Valerie Brown chose North Road
Prior to purchasing the land on Campobello, we visited the island at least once a year for several years. In 2001, while staying on the island, one day we just rode around and pulled into this driveway. It opened to the beautiful view of Harbour DeLoutre and we were sold! We found that it was for sale and purchased it. The following year we built "Gull Cove."
What makes this Cottage unique
We fell in love with the property and then our cottage. The views, the tides, the wild life; all spectacular. We have done a great deal of traveling in the states and Europe, but have never found any place that took our breath away like this lovely cottage that we call "Gull Cove" and the gorgeous, refreshing, magical, uncomplicated, island of Campobello.

Wonderful Stay! Stunning Location!
We were a party of five that spent 8 nights in this wonderful cottage. There are many times where the pictures on these websites make the place to look better than it actually is. That is certainly not the case here! The cottage was absolutely spotless and had more room than we anticipated. The decorations are unique and perfect. The beds and furniture were very comfortable. There wasn't anything that we could want or need that wasn't provided. It is in a secluded spot with the some of the best scenery that you could ever find. If you want to get away from the world for a while, there is no better place. You can sit on the porch all day or you can experience all that the area has to offer. Valerie was a pleasure to deal with. She offered many helpful tips to help us enjoy our vacation. We spend a week on Campobello Island every summer and would love to stay at this cottage again! Thanks for sharing your fantastic property with our family. Truly a 5 star experience!
our Campobello birthday trip
we all totally enjoyed our visit to Campobello and out stay at Gull Cove Cottage. the space was perfect for us and accommodate everyone's needs. It was open , bright and warm despite some cold, rainy weather and beautiful during the sunny weather. It was peaceful , quiet and relaxing. Thank you for sharing your home .
A little slice of heaven...
We are just back from 5 nights at Valerie’s perfect cottage getaway, our first but not last stay there we hope!
When planning our vacation we were looking for somewhere quiet and peaceful, dog-friendly, near the water, secluded yet not too far from amenities and a restaurant or two, where we could relax, recharge, read and go for walks. Valerie’s cottage offered all of that and a lot more - we’re smitten with the cottage, the location, everything!
First the cottage: it’s comfortable, quaint and ‘beach’ey’ in the perfect way! Filled with everything you could need, a cute and quaint decor that we loved, the most comfortable bed, comfy chairs and sofas for reading by the wood-burning fire, open-concept main area and windows and views from every room. Oh, and the radiant floors that heated everything up perfectly (and felt so nice underfoot) on the one night we needed them. At night not a sound and not a light save the moon and stars - gorgeous to sit outside and star gaze and we had the best nights’ sleep in quite some time!
The porch deserves its own paragraph! We lived there and had almost every single meal there. Reading in the rocking chairs, just relaxing - the views, the cove smell, the sunrises and evening light. The highlight of our trip was just being outside and relaxing so much! Everyday we had 10-12 seals swimming right in front of the cottage and basking on the small rock islands when the tide went down, we saw bald eagles every day (including a memorable morning when 5, 2 adults and 3 juveniles, landed nearby and squabbled over a dropped fish) rabbits, hummingbirds & deer. We followed Valerie’s suggestion and made an evening fire in the pit near the water and barbecued hot-dogs with seals looking on from the water. Perfect evening!
In terms of Campobello Island & Lubec, Maine they were exactly what we wanted! Small, non-touristey, fishing villages. Nothing fancy or pretentious, beautiful views everywhere, great walking and hiking trails (we loved seeing whales jumping out of the water from Raccoon beach in Roosevelt park), friendly people. We loved the food at Family Fisheries on the island and The Inn of the Wharf in Lubec.
Valerie was the most gracious, friendly, informative host in all of our communications and thought of everything in the information she provided.
In summary: a little slice of heaven and we felt as if we were staying at a friend’s home! We will definitely be coming back!
Thank you Valerie for sharing this!
Thank you so much. Your incredibly flattering review is music to my ears. All that you have written is what we strived for from the time we purchased the land and constructed our cottage. It was exactly what we had in mind to get away from our noisy, electronic, television driven society. The many positive reviews from our many year after year returning guests, has assured us that there are many out there who look for, and so appreciate, the many wonders of peace and secluded quiet. They come to enjoy the porch, the beauty and entertainment of nature. Taking the time to slow down the pace and learn, once again, the many wonders that surround us and not seen because of our sometimes frantic life styles. Very often I'm asked, "what do you do there?" My answer is always the same, "you must experience it to understand." We have blended the cottage with peace and comfort, along with modern conveniences that do not take away from "old world charm," but rather allow us all the more time to enjoy the beauty of Campobello and the comfort, after a day of island exploration, of total relaxation on the porch --- our favorite place.
Thank you again for choosing Gull Cove for your vacation getaway. Thank you also for taking such good care of my cottage during your residency. It is very much appreciated.
outstanding accomodations and location
Valerie is a wonderful hostess and her housekeeper is a rock star. Gull Cove is an exceptional property. Quiet, private, beautifully clean, well appointed; and being able to bring our pooch with us was wonderful. We were constantly amazed at the abundant wildlife outside our door; as well around the whole island. We also enjoyed hiking the parks, hanging on the beaches and finding sea glass. Finally, the folks of Campobello Island are welcoming and friendly. Gull Cove is an excellent "home away from home".
We hope you get to go there soon!!!!
Perfect place to explore Campobello Island
We loved our two week stay at this cozy beautiful cabin overlooking the harbor. From the moment we walked in until the day we left, this cabin felt like home. It’s open, airy, tastefully decorated, with a screened in porch that overlooks the water and the multitude of gulls, eagles, and seals that were a pleasure to watch every morning with coffee. The porch faces the east and you’ll be treated to the most beautiful sunrises each day; all different, unique, and quickly changing! I couldn’t get enough pictures of the beauty every morning....and even our one day of fog and clouds held a quiet beauty that remains a part of us. We were lucky enough to watch the moon rise over the water as well.
Practically, the house has comfortable beds, modern clean bathrooms, an open floor plan ( kitchen- dining- living area) with a well stocked kitchen to make your own meals if you wish. There is spotty cell phone coverage and no internet, but the cottage has a TV, DVD and CD player along with a great selection of movies and music to listen to, and a great Sony Surround System. There is no AC but the many windows were enough to always have a wonderful breeze. The cottage is on one level so there are no stairs to contend with except one up to the doors (there are three doors that lead outside). Parking right next to the back door made getting our stuff into the cabin very convenient. Finding the cabin even on gravel roads was easy thanks to all the new street signs. The island is beautiful, but note that if you are looking for a lot of action, this isn’t the place for you! There is one grocery store, one liquor store, one ATM, one or two gift shops, no gas station, and a handful of restaurants. However going back and forth into Lubec Maine will give you many more options for groceries, banks, and restaurants and Eastport Maine is an hours ride away. The FDR Park and Cottage were beautiful and Tea with Eleanor was an interesting and fun thing to do.
Lastly and most importantly emails and contact with Valerie the owner before our trip allowed us to ask questions and develop a relationship that I feel contributed to the feel of our stay! Her personal approach makes you feel like you are staying at your friends cottage! We have used HomeAway many times and this was by far our best experience! Thank you Valerie for the wonderful memories we have of “Gull Cove” and our two weeks on Campobello Island❤️
You are more than welcome. I will add to your very welcome complimentary review, the fact that you were excellent guests and delightful to communicate with throughout. The fact that you obviously enjoyed all of the wonderful attributes about my property are words dear to my heart. It is very special to me when my guests truly enjoy my cottage the same as I do. It's more than obvious that you have done exactly that. Please know that should you decide on another visit to magnificent Campobello, I would very much enjoy welcoming you back to "Gull Cove." Please accept my thanks for taking the time to write this lovely review, it is very much appreciated.
Warm regards, Valerie
Wow. What a great spot. Beautiful views, comfy, all the facilities you could need, quiet, and relaxing. Watch the sun come up across the cove from the screen porch and plan your day. We tied our kayaks up right in front and paddled with the seals and sea birds when the tide was right. Campobello is a small island and nothing is a far drive away. We saw whales just about every day as we drove around exploring, and watched fishing boats working the herring catch going on right now. The seafood is great as you'd expect too. We made one grocery run to Lubec mid-week as the island store, while adequate, is limited in its selection. The border staff were fine and we had no issues.
Bottom line...if you want peace and relaxation and a glimpse of a working fishing community as an added bonus, this is the place. 5 stars from us!
This log cabin style cottage is located on the unique and spectacular island of Campobello and offers glorious sunrises and sunsets. Witness foggy days or nights and go to sleep with the lull of fog horns around and near the island. Observe seals, a large variety of ducks, great blue herons, eagles, as well as many other varieties of birds from your rocking chair on the long screened porch. You can also enjoy meals and/or beverages on the screened porch which has an outdoor dining set. On your computer, type in Bay of Fundy to learn about the highest tides in the world and then come to Campobello and see for yourself. Tide rises and falls 8-10ft per hour. It's truly amazing to watch. Attractions include the former summer home of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, now a museum and within the 2800 acre Roosevelt Campobello International Park, which is supported by both USA and Canada, the only one of its kind in the world. A new feature is "Tea With Eleanor," highly popular with locals and guests as well. There are numerous hiking trails within the park with breathtaking views of the ocean and with benches and picnic facilities throughout. While a guest on this splendid island, enjoy friendly, very helpful locals, visit beautiful mile long Herring Cove, which has a sand and pebble beach for swimming or beach combing, play at the 9 hole provincial golf course located high above the sea with breathtaking views. Enjoy kayaking, canoeing, bicycling, hiking, fishing, bird watching, whale watching tours on Passamaquoddy Bay, gift shops, Head Harbor Lighthouse, where at low tide you can walk on the bottom of the sea. There are also trails and picnic tables at the lighthouse location. You will be asked for a $5.00 preservation donation and $10.00 to tour the lighthouse. Stop in and enjoy a delicious meal at Family Fisheries, pick up a picnic lunch or ice cream from their take out. Two more restaurants have been recently opened, one with a lovely water view. You can ferry across the bay to Eastport, Maine and visit charming shops and restaurants, or drive over the FDR bridge to Lubec, Maine, also with many interesting shops and restaurants and a candy shop located just out of the center with mouthwatering chocolates and beautiful handmade clothing and jewelry as well as other interesting and unusual items. In Lubec you will also find West Quoddy Head light, the eastern most point of land in the USA, also with hiking paths and picnic tables. There are no gas stations located on Campobello, however, there is one in Lubec. There is also a medical facility located in Lubec. Most of all, and our personal favorite, is the peace and tranquility of Campobello Island, as well as the spectacular beauty, and the helpful, warm, and wonderful people. You will find our cottage, "Gull Cove" a welcome hideaway from our harried, electronic world. So, whether you choose to remain at the cottage, or go out and about, your home away from home will always welcome you back offering beautiful surroundings, comfort, peace, tranquility, spectacular views, as well as non-stop entertainment with our friends of the sea and air, not to mention the amazing tides.
