As you gaze at the deep blue waters of the Caldera you feel the calm breeze touch your heart and soul in a unique way. You certainly get a bird’s eye view watching the cruise boats as they sneak from the cape and follow the sun all the way from sunrise to sunset.

Unlike most cave houses in Santorini, once you enter the Blue & White House you are surprised by the soaring heights of the curved ceiling. Spacey, roomy, well-lit, the house maintains a constant temperature throughout the year (bioclimatic house), providing a refreshing, cool welcome after a long day under the demanding Greek sun. Inside, the white color prevails almost everywhere. It will make you feel refreshed, calm and pure. The unique architecture of the cave house meets with art objects and airy furniture to please the senses.

There is one master bedroom with a beautiful double bed. There is additionally a small adjacent room to the master bedroom. In the living area there are two traditional style built in twin beds for lounging or for extra guests. The master bedroom is separated from the living area by a doorway and 3 small windows. It also provides a dining table and an extra long sofa for relaxing. There is an indoor tiled bathroom with a shower and a second outdoor bathroom. The fully equipped kitchen faces the beautiful Aegean sea.

Outside, the spacious private terrace provides the stage for unencumbered relaxation staring the amazing landscape of the caldera. Your eyes feast on the view producing numberless private mental postcards. You will enjoy your breakfast/dinner at the romantic private veranda with panoramic view of the cities of Imerovigli, Firostefani, Fira and “Athinios” port on the edge of the Caldera, the volcano and the islands of Palia and Nea Kammeni.

Every now and then, tourists with their cameras in hand, slowly, quietly and respectfully glide down the steps passing in front of the porch of the house as if visiting a church. Why Maria chose Santorini

The Blue & White House was built sometime in the late 1800s. It was a sailor's lowly house, just like most cave houses. Sometime in the 1970s it was bought by my maternal grandfather.

Antonis Dakoronias, born in Santorini in 1918, was a seaman himself. He spent 37 years at the sea, most of them as a captain, commanding commercial vessels around the world, before nestling again in Oia. He became president of Oia's local council and he founded the Maritime Museum of Oia (a must-see place). I became the owner of the Blue & White House after my mother inherited it in the 1990s.

I first set foot in Santorini in 1976 and have revisited most years since then. But since the mid-90s, this house has been my exclusive accommodation point in Santorini. Practically every summer I return to this house and pay homage to this most beautiful village in this most sensational island. In 2000 I performed a full restoration of the house to its current excellent state. I am proud of my ancestral links to Oia and a privileged owner of this classic, cliff-hanging cave house. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have been enjoying it for almost 20 years.

We had a fantastic stay! Maria is a marvelous hostess. She and her staff could not have been more attentive and welcoming. The food at the local restaurants was terrific and the wait staffs were gracious. The visit to the volcanic hot spring was a fantastic experience unlike any I have ever had and was arranged by Maria with her friends. I heartily recommend Maria's cave house to anyone intending to visit Santorini. You won't do better anywhere else.

A dream property and hostess

  • 5 of 5

The location and the cave house were amazing, but renting from Maria pushed the fabulousness over the top. She takes care of EVERY detail to make sure your time in Oia and Santorini is fantastic.

She makes sure you don't have to carry your luggage up or down the stairs (which is a big benefit because the cave house is down a bit so it's nice and secluded). She stocked the fridge with goodies, she got us the best table for sunset view at a great fish restaurant in Ammoudi Bay, she hosted a delicious *private* rooftop sunset mezze for me and my family, she sent over homemade rice pudding for my daughters, got us us free sunbeds at luxurious beach areas...I could go on an on!

What we really appreciated was the time that she took to make sure we had the best experiences and saw the most amazing things. For example, directions to a tucked-away swimming area and cliff diving location at Ammoudi Bay, and the most wonderful secluded black sand beach (Eros Beach). Just incredible memories.

As for the cave house, it's everything lovely you see in these pictures and more. It was a great size for 2 adults and 2 tweens, well-appointed and comfortable. The patio just cannot be beat. I spent as much time there as possible.

Note that you cannot see the sunrise or sunset from the patio. I didn't mind at all, because the areas for sunset (a 2 min walk) were MOBBED. This was a quiet area all for you, with the exception of some brides that show up to take pictures by the church bells. We loved seeing them and it wasn't intrusive at all.

You will not regret renting here -- it was a dream!

Perfect in every way!

  • 5 of 5

I booked Maria's Blue and White Cave House after weeks of research, reading reviews and comparing rentals on Oia. I was looking for a typical cave house with a view and most important, not too difficult to access as my 82 year old father was travelling with me. Maria's Cave House matched all my requirements and when we arrived we were not disappointed. The view was breathtaking, the house itself was bright, welcoming, clean and the kitchen well stocked. The minor issue I would say would be that the wording in her listing with regards to bedrooms was a bit misleading. I was under the impression that there would be 2 actual bedrooms which could be closed off from the main living/dining room, however it is one private bedroom with a double bed and 2 fixed (very comfortable) twin beds in the front living/dining room. A third rollaway bed was provided in the same room as we were 5 people. This would be perfect for a family (couple travelling with 2-3 children), however I was travelling with various family members, my husband, son, mother in law and my father so sleeping arrangements of who should sleep where became a bit tricky with some sleeping in, some waking up early and not trying not to disturb others. However Maria's hospitality more than made up for this and as we were there for only 2 nights we were able to adjust.

Throughout the entire process Maria was very helpful and always responded to all my queries without delay. She, Stravos and Konstantina are a great team and made sure our stay was perfect from start to finish. She sent us a lot of information before we arrived and also gave us a lot of information while we were there. We were invited to view the sunset from her private terrace which was wonderful as the entire place was teeming with tourists however we could sit and relax. Stravos was very helpful, he met us on arrival to help with our luggage and showed us round to different places in Oia recommended by Maria and Konstatina kept the apartment spotless.

We were there in July and it was particularly hot, but the house was nice and cool and it was a treat that we could sit on the terrace with a glass of wine and have the magnificent views in front of us.

Our stay was a treat especially for my father, an architect as he was able to get a close up look at the houses perched on the edge of the caldera and amazing caldera views right from our front door.

I would definitely go back again, hopefully for longer next time! Thank you!

“A Little Piece of Heaven”

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for an authentic travel experience that will transport you and make you understand what it's like to actually live in this spectacular place -- stay here in Maria's Blue and White Cave house. The views of the caldera are absolutely breathtaking and the cave house is a cool retreat from the Santorini heat. Maria and her team will see to it that all of your needs are met. The refrigerator was stocked with food for breakfast and snacks when we arrived and she took great care of us and gave us the best suggestions for food, drink, entertainment and activities all over the island. Maria even made her terrace available to us whenever we wanted a private relaxed view of the spectacular sunset. Trust me, you will not have half as good an experience in a hotel and Maria is the kindest and is known by everyone on the island and various establishments offer discounts if you mention her name to them. I even twisted my foot at one point and she came over and doted on me and nursed me back to health. Do yourself a favor rent this house or one of her other beautiful cave houses. You will be glad you did. One more thing, Santorini and Oia in particular is a spectacular place but mobbed with tourists with selfie sticks in the summer. Be prepared.

Nice enough property; massively overpriced island

  • 3 of 5

Our family stayed two nights here the first week of June. The view is astounding but the constant parade of Japanese newlyweds and fashion model hopefuls right outside your doorstep spoils it somewhat. The kitchen was well stocked and came with enough food to make a nice breakfast but most of the dishes were stored under the kitchen sink where the mildew smell was overwhelming and permeated the entire kitchen whenever you opened the cabinet. The water heater could accommodate a single shower, but there were two water heaters. The house is a short walk to the main pedestrian way in Oia--you will however have to dodge at least three piles of dog excrement along the way and if you arrive there between 10a-6p you will be jostled by thousands of sweaty camera toting cruise ship passengers. Obviously I think Santoirini is significantly overrated--the house itself was fairly priced for the market but the per person 70Euro surcharge for the three children ultimately made this selection a poor choice for the money. For a couple it still might be worthwhile. Maria and her staff were pleasant and helpful.

Owner's Response: As a property owner on the island it is my responsibility to try to address all concerns of my guests. We want our guests to enjoy their time on the island. We appreciate all feedback. Santorini was ranked the world's top island in magazines and travel sites. Thousands of international travelers visit the island each year. We welcome all nationalities, including those toting cameras and hopeful models, to come and enjoy the beauty, culture and history of our island. For potential and future guests: please understand that you will not have to “dodge at dog excrement” each time you walk to your house. However, there are a few dogs on the island and donkeys. In Santorini water heater in homes accommodates one or two showers at a time. Within 5 minutes the water is re-heated. Just enough time for someone to get out of the bathroom and the next person to get in or enough time to have a glass of wine! Moreover there are two water heaters in the house, one in each bathroom, in case there are a few people in the house. About James' mentioning:“the mildew smell was overwhelming", I have to inform you that this situation was not related to the rental property. A maintenance issue with the town's piping system was in progress. It was corrected in 24 hours. Note that there have never been any complaints/comments about any smell at the property. I hope readers will see this guest's comment for what it is. We have a lot positive comments and very good ratings from our guests that we feel it will give a more accurate view of our properties and the island of Santorini.

Magnificent view and stay

  • 5 of 5

Wake up to the most amazing views of the beautiful Agean ocean. The cave house was clean and beautiful and most comfortable. Everything worked well and we had no issues. We spent 5 days here with our 3 children and loved every minute. The house is centrally and conveniently located with not many steps to get down. Maria was a wonderful host. Definitely would recommend.

It is located in the old city of Oia near the Castle which is the famous 'Sunset Point' of Greece! It is also 5 minutes walking distance from the Lounge Cafe Pool Bar called “Lyogerma” and 10 minutes' drive from the three beaches that are near Oia. Other Activities: You can take a boat trip around the volcano, explore an archaeological excavation of a 3000 year-old civilization, or perhaps visit some cultural museums.
