I am an attorney. My daughter and I live on premises.
Owner/Property Manager purchased this villa in 2001
I rented this property 20 yeas prior to purchasing it. It is the only house on the street which looks the same as it did 100 years ago .
The house is located on a residential street with little traffic and no discos or bars.
The grounds of the Governor's Mansion are only about 40 yards across the small Plaza and there is a constant police presence . There is usually a Commonwealth policeman on duty in the area of the Plaza called 'La Rogativa'which is shown with the large statue in the photos.
The entrance to the National Park 'El Morro' is just further down the st at the very end about 70 yards from the property. This is an urban property in a close to rural setting
. Overall, the 'Caleta ' is just a very unique street with the San Juan Cathedral at its beginning bordered by the Hotel El Convento and the small plaza just in front of the Church and the Governor's mansion, the El Morro National Park and the grounds of 'La Casa Blanca' which was Ponce de Leon's residence at the very end .
If you enjoy walking you also have the 2 harbor walkways known as the El Morro Trail and the 'Paseo de la Princesa' only a block away with the Sheraton Hotel and Casino about a 15 minute walk either through the Old City or along the bay.
The owner was present to show us everything, fabulous location, shabby chic is how I would describe it. I would stay there again.
My husband and I loved our stay here! We have stayed in several different apartments in old San Juan and this was our favorite. The views were amazing and it was a great location. The bathroom was old but everything functioned fine. There is only one air conditioned bedroom but there was such a great breeze through the rest of the house it wasn't needed anywhere else. It looked just like it was pictured. We will stay there again!
Our group came in 2 days early for a cruise and stayed here. It was as expected. We wanted historic San Juan and we were not disappointed. We rented upstairs and downstairs apartments. Our host Peter let us have a late check out for boarding the ship for a late cruise departure. He was very accommodating. We will return to Old San Juan and rent here.
Apt is in a charming part of town. Beautiful window views of the water.
Apt is on the older side, a/c in only 1 bedroom, and shower is pretty old too. But overall a good experience as apt is charming and in a safe part of town close to nice restaurants and fun activities.
We absolutely loved this apartment. It's every person's dream of the perfect Caribbean getaway. It's located in the oldest, historic building on the street. Viewing balconies, stretching across the front, overlook a small plaza bordered by the old massive city walls, and the sparkling sea beyond. A large secluded open air terrace lies off the kitchen: perfect for intimate breakfasts or candlelight dinners. The terrace is semi-surrounded by Jurassic-like roots and vines cascading from the old adobe and brick walls. Tiny tree frogs, nestled in the leaves, serenade you at night. During the day, small groups of tourists wander through your plaza gazing at a famous statue center stage - ships sail by. The biggest decision of the day was always whether to stroll through the shops in town, or lounge around the apartment soaking up the atmosphere. The owner, Peter, is both charming and helpful. He recommended Eleana, our personal on call taxi driver, as well as several great restaurants just steps from our door. If this beautiful apartment is available when you need it, don't let it get away. We were sorry to leave. But we will be back.
This property was in a great location! The views are awesome!
The property does have colonial charm -
But, the property needs LOTS of work. When we arrived, one bed was not made, Peter had to go to get a lock for the door, the property is very disorganized.
The photos shown are only accurate for the views.
The only AC (very loose term here - it barely works) is in the main bedroom.
The ceiling fan in the main bedroom squeaked VERY loud.
Most of the fans provided did not work.
The kitchen is very disorganized - broken coffee pot, mismatched dishes, the refrigerator does not work - but you can cool water in the freezer section. - It does not look like the photos at all.
In the main bathroom - duct tape is used for the shower head for the water heater, a plant is displayed in the bidet, dish soap was in the bath room?, no rug was provided.
The second bathroom - the toilet seat is broken, you can barely sit on the toilet.
The open space where another bedroom "is going to be installed" is a collection of broken fans, a twin mattress and lots of other broken things.
The patio is VERY dirty - not inviting at all. (also lots of tree frogs which make it very noisy at night)
Because it is so hot at night - we left the windows open and got bit by nats or mosquitos -
No instructions were given for check in or check out.
I think Peter is probably a nice guy, but this property is priced a little high for the accommodations.
So, only rent this property if you want a nice view - OR if you get it REALLY cheap.
OSJ has lots of other properties available that provide more comfort than this place.
The property is:
only 3 blocks from the main plaza of the Old City called 'Plaza de las Armas' where the Old City's only supermarket is located in addition to Walgreens, Puerto Rico Drugstore, Marshalls and a handful of fast foods and cafes
5 minutes walking to El Morro Fort
45 minutes walking to nearest blue flag beach 'Escambron'
1 block to San Juan Gate and the harbor walkways
1 block from the famous Calle Cristo with many shops, bars and restaurants
1 block to San Juan Cathedral
3 blocks to San Sebastian St. with over 15 bars and restaurants
