Gum Run Cabin (Please see all the details below)

We remodeled Gum Run Cabin the end of June 2013. We updated the entire kitchen with all new stainless steel appliances and new counter tops and new cabinets as well. This is a real cabin that was originally built as a Summer getaway that has been updated. Because of this the cabin has a lot of character and touches that new construction does not have. If you are looking for a brand new cabin built for use just as a vacation rental, then this cabin may not be for you... this cabin has real character and offers a glimpse into the past. :) We think its history is part of what makes it special.

The bathroom has also been completely redone. There is now a double shower / tub combo. The cabin has a rough cut pine exterior and a western red cedar interior. There is also a nice screen wrap around porch out front. The cabin is a two bedroom cabin (both queen size beds) with a loft. The loft has very low ceilings (best for kids or teenagers). It has four single mattresses on the floor in it. As of right now, we built a custom cedar ladder for access to the loft. Kids under 4 years old should probably not climb the ladder into the loft. This cabin can sleep 8 if you share beds and ten if you sleep on the couch. The maximum occupancy is not the amount of people the cabin sleeps it's the amount we will allow in the cabin.

There is a wood stove in the living room with real river rock stone hand picked from the stream on our property. Firewood must be purchased on site for both indoor and outdoor fires.

Pets are always welcome but we do require a pet fee for each pet. Please also note that the cabin is located in a forest in the mountains. There will be wildlife outside the cabin. Because this is a real cabin, there may things you should expect to find in a real cabin located in the forest such as spider webs (we clean them for every guest but they do reappear quickly), ladybugs and occasional stink bugs or mice during certain times of the year. We do treat for all of these but we cannot guarantee that they will not be there at times. This is a real cabin in the woods. Sheets, toilet paper and towels are provided. Paper towels are not.

On clear nights, you can see thousands of stars overhead. It is a beautiful sight. Also during the spring and summer months, you can see humming birds everywhere. We place feeders off the front porch of the house and have personally seen upwards of 20 birds feeding on them at one time in the area.

Check in time is 4:00 pm until 10 pm and checkout is 11 am. Early check-ins, before 4, or Late check-ins, after 10 pm, and late check-outs, after 11 am, require a $20 per hour fee. Please ask in advance about late check-ins.

No smoking in the cabin. No beer pong or Hookahs. Noise must kept to a minimum and quiet hours are 9 pm to 9 am.

Guests are required to sign a rental agreement upon arrival and a photo ID. For this reason, the person who makes the reservation has to be the there at the time of check-in, unless the contract is signed and arrangements are made for someone else to check-in in advance.

Pets are welcome at all of our properties. If you or someone in your group is allergic to pets or anything else (detergent, air fresheners, etc), please let us know in advance so we can discuss this prior to your booking and then also prior to your arrival.

All pet fee(s), early/late check-in or late check-out, firewood or extra person fees are not refundable once paid.

This cabin has a window unit a/c in the living room. We have not had anyone complain about it being too hot and the window unit has met with everyone's approval thus far. There are floor heaters for heat. Please be aware of this prior to booking the cabin. We want all of our guests to be more than satisfied.

The cabin is on a well... sometimes the well, depending on the water table will put out iron water that can appear orange at times and stain the toilet and bathtub and may smell. This is not harmful in any way, it just looks strange in the bathtub. We do have an expensive water treatment system set up to treat the water, but the water is sometimes too strong for the treatment system. There is also an occasional sulphur smell in the water as well (more often with hot water usage than with cold). This too is not harmful, but it can strong depending on the water table. The drinking water through the refrigerator though. Because this is a real old cabin, there are things you should expect to find on occasion in an older real cabin such as spider webs (we clean them for every guest but they do reappear quickly), ladybugs, tiny critters and the occasional stink bug during certain times of the year.

Failure to show up/check in or contact owner before midnight of day of arrival will result in cancellation. Host reserves the right to rebook property if guest does NOT contact owner.

Owners are not responsible to mail or hold on to left items.

About Katie and Steven Robert Jones

We came to Virginia from Texas so I (Steven) could finish my college degree, but got into the vacation rental business by accident. :) We have 4 daughters under the age of 5. We have 6 rescue dogs, 2 rescue cats, 2 ponies, 8 goats & about 50 chickens.

We believe service is what sets us apart in the vacation rental industry. Katie & I personally own every cabin that we manage. We check-in all of our guests personally (sometimes even as late as 2 or 3 in the morning with prior approval). When you arrive, the lights will be on and you will be welcomed and shown around the cabin, unlike most other rentals where you access a lock box and walk into a dark cold house. This is all we do 24/7 and we want all of our guests to have an amazing stay. We would be honored if you would allow us the opportunity to serve you.

Katie and Steven Robert Jones purchased this cabin in 2012

Why Katie and Steven Robert Jones chose Shenandoah Valley

This cabin is in a great location. Whippoorwills are very common in the Spring to early Summer months as are Hummingbirds. The sound of Gum Run rushing by about 100 yards across the front yard is very peaceful.

What makes this cabin unique

There are 3 hiking trails within walking distance of the cabin (two of which can only be accessed from from our private land). There are numerous other trails within a very short drive of the cabin.

Cabin with unsafe and unhealthy conditions, if I could select no stars I would.

  • 1 of 5

As the Owner/Manager of the property that I rented for my Son's and myself I would expect that you would realize that Customer satisfaction is number one, especially in the hospitality business. Unfortunately, you clearly do not. As the paying Guest we are supposed to show up, relax and try to have a good time none of which we were able to do. Instead we were met with unacceptable conditions that you clearly knew about and did not communicate to us prior to arrival. I really don't care about all of the things you have listed below, again pushing blame to your contractors, employees's etc. It is not our job monitor the water situation turning on, turning off drain hoses etc. The water situation at the cabin was hard for me to even understand, we were not able to shower, wash the dishes, not even try to run the dishwasher we tried, it would not even clean the dishes. As soon as you knew about the conditions you should have directed us to one of your other multiple functioning properties that you describe below. The additional fees that we were forced to pay the night we checked in should have been pointed out to us before hand with the other multiple communications that we had in person, via text or e-mail. I don't care that it is on the website, it does not clearly point it out unless you know were to find it, ridiculous. The drive way was also something that as a property owner I would expect you to realize that it was a total hazard as pointed out in the pictures that I sent you. Completely torn up, large holes, huge rocks and boulders and the night we arrived mud. Why would I want to park down by the road, 40 some yards away to navigate in the pitch dark unloading our groceries, baggage etc, and then to do it again every morning and every evening in the dark going to and returning from our Hunting trips up the road on the mountain. Lastly, I received the e-mail from you about the wood and responded in red that we would want to purchase wood. We paid cash to the Rep for unlimited wood the first night. The rep dropped off a little of indoor and outdoor wood Thursday night, just barley enough for us to get through the night with the wood stove which is what we told him we preferred over the 2 electric heaters. Every day I had to request wood. The amount we paid for unlimited wood was ridiculous because it was not unlimited, I had to keep asking for it, again not my job as the Guest. I would like to ask for a complete refund. Please respond!!!

Great Local Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We had a splendid time here! The cabin had all the modern conveniences but still had its rustic character. We enjoyed making a fire and playing in the nearby creek. The beds were comfortable and the loft was a great place for the older kids to sleep in. We appreciated the nice coffee maker and toaster but perhaps, some of the pots and pans were a bit outdated but still usable. We hope to make another visit to this charming and cozy cabin in the woods!

Quiet and peaceful cabin. Not as close to everything as I thought.

Cabin was nice and had lots of character, a few things could of been done to enhance experience

  • 3 of 5

The cabin was cute with lots of character, it wasn't as remote as I thought it would be but the upside was that it was only 20 minutes to Harrisburg. What I didn't like was I had to pay separately for firewood inside as well as out. We only got enough for one fire in each which added another $40 dollars. I had to clean out the inside fireplace first as well as empty the dishwasher. Some of the dishes and cups provided to use were rough and stained badly by the water.

When we had booked this cabin, we thought it would be perfect since it had all the great reviews but we actually had a very stressful experience. First, when we booked the cabin about a month & a week in advance & the owner never contacted us back about the contract until three days before we arrived at the cabin. We had to get in contact with them several different times because we were confused about the contract & they seemed to have a hard time responding to us about that. When we arrived, there were 2 trash cans full of trash & they were never emptied the entire time we were there. The cabin itself was beautiful inside but the porch definitely needed some work. We were looking foward to seeing the chickens on the property but the chicken coop looked like it had been empty for a while. Eveything looked clean inside but when we opened the dishwasher, there were old dishes that smelled and ants crawling inside and all over the sink. There was also a HUGE spider & a centipede in the bathroom. The shower looked nice & new but when we tried to turn on the water, barely anything came out so nobody could shower for the 3 days we were there. Then when we turned on the sink water, that was also barely working so we could hardly wash any dishes. When I contacted the owners, they said a plumber was coming to look at it. The plumber never came. It was ridiculous. The lock to the door is very difficult to lock. There was only half a roll of toilet paper left, no sponges or anything to clean the dishes with, no kitchen towels. We couldn't even watch any movies because there was no dvd remote!! We looked everywhere for it but it was nowhere to be found. The only positive things I can say about this cabin is how comfy the beds are, how cute the loft is, & the firepit. Other than that, it did not feel much like a vacation. This was a waste of time coming here, i do not recommend it!

Cute cabin for a getaway weekend

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I rented this cabin for Valentine's weekend in 2016. It was a great choice. We really enjoyed being in the woods, but close enough to Harrisonburg that we could just go into town for a meal or shopping. There ended up being an unexpected snow and ice storm over the last night we were scheduled to be there and we weren't sure it was a good day to drive back home. Katie was super accommodating in arranging for us to stay an extra night.

We bought firewood from the hosts and used the woodstove and space heaters to keep the cabin cozy. The kitchen very modern and we did a good amount of cooking while we were there. There are beds for 8 people which might be a bit of a stretch for the only bathroom on the property, but our bed was very comfortable and warm. Certainly there was more than enough room for the two of us!

We would definitely recommend the place. It would be nice to come back in warmer weather so that we could enjoy the woods, the porch and the fire pit outside.
