Please read the entire description for this cabin. This is a 100 year old cabin and is rustic and quaint, but it is not perfect. This is a real 100 year old cabin that borders the national forest, not new construction. We like this cabin because staying here is like walking back in time to a different era. You can stay at one of the many new construction vacation rentals in the Shenandoah Valley, but Bear Ridge Cabin has history and character. This is one thing that sets Bear Ridge Cabin apart. If you read the description you will know what to expect. We also believe that service is another thing that sets us apart in the vacation rental industry. Katie & I personally own every cabin that we manage. We check-in all of our guests personally (sometimes even as late as 2 in the morning with prior approval and fee). When you arrive, the lights will be on and you will be welcomed and shown around the cabin. This is all we do 24/7 and we want all of our guests to have an amazing stay. We would be honored if you allow us the opportunity to serve you.
Bear Ridge Cabin is a 100 year old real cabin that sits on a ridge above Rawley Springs. There is direct access to the George Washington National Forest within a couple of minutes right out the door of the cabin and we own all of the land between the cabin and the national forest. There are two rivers (one is small enough that you might call it a stream) that are about a 5-10 minute walk from the cabin. They both contain native Trout and one of them is stocked with Trout as well. Dry River (it never actually dries up) is one of the best Trout fishing rivers on the east coast.
There are several trails that are within walking distance of the national forest where hiking and mountain biking are allowed. One goes up into the mountains and the other is mostly level and follows the river for about 45 minutes and then heads up into the mountains.
There are also numerous hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and ATV trails within driving distance of the cabin.
The cabin has two bedrooms. The both ave queen sized beds. The bedrooms are not very large, but they are quaint and cozy. There is a queen couch bed inside and one outside on the screen porch. The cabin sleeps 6 inside in beds/couch bed if shared and 8 if using regular couches. the maximum occupancy is the amount of people we allow to stay not the amount that can sleep in beds. The nice sized living room with the original real stone, wood burning fireplace is a great place to gather with friends or sit and read when the weather turns colder. There is one bathroom with an older (1990's era) sit down shower. The kitchen has all newer stainless steel appliances, including a gas stove top. There is also a deck with a grill, charcoal. Guests are welcome to use it, The screen porch is nice sized and has two older couches and a chair as well as a table with seating for 5.
There is a queen size pull out couch in the living room and then another one one the screen porch. The pull out couch on the screen porch is older and not very comfortable, but it is an amazing place to sleep when the weather suits.
In the warmer months there is a floor model A/C unit that will cool down the cabin nicely. In the Winter there are several smaller heaters throughout the cabin that are able to keep the cabin warm enough even when the temperature drops below zero. We've had guests stay when it was -6 degrees and still be warm. There is also a wood burning fireplace, wood for a fee, can really warm up the cabin on cold days. The cabin windows are custom and made of real wood and they are very old and therefore there are no screens for them. We would also like to replace the three screen doors soon as well whereas they are older.
Pets are welcome but we do require a pet fee when pets stay at the cabin.
On clear nights, you can see thousands of stars overhead. It is a beautiful sight. Also during the spring and summer months, you can see humming birds everywhere. We place feeders off the front porch of the house and have personally seen upwards of 20 birds feeding on them at one time in the area. Because this is a real cabin, there are things you should expect to find on occasion in an older real cabin such as spider webs (we clean them for every guest but they do reappear quickly), ladybugs, tiny critters and the occasional stink bug during certain times of the year. Sheets, toilet paper and towels are provided. Paper towels are not.
Check in time is 4:00 pm until 10 pm and checkout is 11 am. Early check-ins, before 4, or Late check-ins, after 10 pm, and late check-outs, after 11 am, require a $20 per hour fee. Please ask in advance about late check-ins.
No smoking in the cabin. No beer pong or Hookahs. Noise must kept to a minimum and quiet hours are 9 pm to 9 am.
Guests are required to sign a rental agreement upon arrival and a photo ID. For this reason, the person who makes the reservation has to be the there at the time of check-in, unless the contract is signed and arrangements are made for someone else to check-in in advance.
Pets are welcome at all of our properties. If you or someone in your group is allergic to pets or anything else (detergent, air fresheners, etc), please let us know in advance so we can discuss this prior to your booking and then also prior to your arrival.
All pet fee(s), early/late check-in or late check-out, firewood or extra person fees are not refundable once paid.
Failure to show up/check in or contact owner before midnight of day of arrival will result in cancellation. Host reserves the right to rebook property if guest does NOT contact owner.
Illegal drugs will not permitted on our properties under any circumstances. Smoking is not permitted inside any house or cabin or on any screen porch. There will be a $750 charge for any smoking in either of these areas. Illegal drugs being used anywhere on the property will result in a $750 charge. Kegs and hookahs are not permitted anywhere on property under any circumstances. There will be a $500 charge should either of these items (kegs or hookahs) be found on the property (this includes outside areas too). If smoking (inside or on screen porches), illegal drugs (meaning what is illegal in Virginia), keg(s), hookah(s) or fireworks (there is a $500 fine for having fireworks or for shooting firearms at a property) are found on the property the guest will be asked to leave and there will be no refund whatsoever for any portion of the stay (including any future days/nights). Guests failing to check-out by 11 am agree to pay $50 an hour for a late check-out beginning at 11:01 am. If the guest is still there at 12:00 noon then then the charge is another $50 and so on with each additional hour the guest overstays their reservation. Late check-outs require prior written permission and applicable late check-out fees to be paid.
We came to Virginia from Texas so I (Steven) could finish my college degree, but got into the vacation rental business by accident. :) We have 4 daughters under the age of 5. We have 6rescue dogs, 2 rescue cats, 2 ponies, 8 goats & about 50 chickens.
We believe service is what sets us apart in the vacation rental industry. Katie & I personally own every cabin that we manage. We check-in all of our guests personally (sometimes even as late as 2 or 3 in the morning with prior approval). When you arrive, the lights will be on and you will be welcomed and shown around the cabin, unlike most other rentals where you access a lock box and walk into a dark cold house. This is all we do 24/7 and we want all of our guests to have an amazing stay. We would be honored if you would allow us the opportunity to serve you.
Katie and Steven Robert Jones purchased this cabin in 2013
This cabin was very close to our cabins and also came with 8 acres of land that bordered the George Washington National Forest so it was a perfect fit with our other cabins.
This cabin feels very private and even has a natural spring fed pond on it complete with lots of tadpoles in Spring. Whippoorwills are very common in the Spring to early Summer months as are Hummingbirds. Also, there are 3 hiking trails within walking distance of the cabin and numerous others within a very short drive of the cabin.
No problem with the structure itself.
Solid tight construction! Good bathroom and kitchen.
It had everything we needed, except a map with local info. According to the advertised info there were falls and paths for hiking not far away, but we could not find them. We had our own map of VA which lacked detailed area info. Google maps helped, but spotty reception in areas. We traveled to service stations, food marts, and the Harrison Tourist office, but could not find maps of the area. I did contact owner to see if there was such a map in the cabin, but the answer was no.
Do your research in advance and take with you!
There is a spacious parking spot up by the cabin ...great for unloading. Park there! We initially parked in lower drive where I became entangled in thorny vines. Husband rescued me!
Overgrown steps made it difficult going to and from fire pit.
The cabin was as described. Although it is advertised to sleep 6, there is additional cost per person, which I didn't quite understand--typically the cost covers up to the amount the accommodation sleeps. Also, there were no bed linens provided for the additional people for the first night--but they were delivered when it was brought to the owners attention. There is a fireplace in the cabin and a fire-pit, but we were told we could not use the fireplace because it was too early in the season and were required to pay for wood if we wanted to use the outdoor fire pit. There were several outlets that did not work in the cabin. Although there is a lockbox on the property, we had to wait to enter until a representative met us, which was a little inconvenient. In general, I would say the property was overpriced for what you get, especially when you pay additional for people and use of the fireplace/fire pit.
So our overall stay when talking about the cabin was great. The cabin was cute (fire pit could use a little updating). The only reason I'm not giving this five stars is because not once did we ever truly talk to the owner. When we got there we had to resign the contract with the "cleaning guy" who was there. Also we tried reaching Katie but could never truly get through to her until the next day via text. Toaster did not work but the cabin was very cute. There was also a couple of times that random people drove right up to our cabin at night to pick up wood which was a little weird to me because you never knew the person was that was there. Other than never meeting the owner during check in like we thought or not be easily reachable...the cabin was nice.
Had an amazing experience! The cabin was clean and quaint. We will definitely be booking again. Would love to see it in the winter.
We loved this little getaway cabin! Our goal for our family vacation was to get the kids into nature and just - breathe - for a little while. There was plenty of hiking, fishing and swimming nearby to fill our time. The kids (teens) really enjoyed all that the cabin and the area had to offer. Grand Caverns Nat'l Park is only 30 minutes away so we stopped there on the way out to visit the caverns. Lots to do!
The cabin was clean with plenty of extra linens. The kitchen was well stocked with dishes/pots/pans etc - for all of our cooking needs. An issue (not the fault of the owner) arose and was dealt with promptly and the problem was solved to our satisfaction and then some. Thank you Katie and Stephen for a wonderful respite from the daily mayhem! We will be back soon!
