Virginia Cabin Rental Photos and Description

Real Cabin. 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bathroom, 1 Pullout couch in living room

Please read the entire description for this cabin. This is a 100 year old cabin and is rustic and quaint, but it is not perfect. This is a real 100 year old cabin that borders the national forest, not new construction. We like this cabin because staying here is like walking back in time to a different era. You can stay at one of the many new construction vacation rentals in the Shenandoah Valley, but Bear Ridge Cabin has history and character. This is one thing that sets Bear Ridge Cabin apart. If you read the description you will know what to expect. We also believe that service is another thing that sets us apart in the vacation rental industry. Katie & I personally own every cabin that we manage. We check-in all of our guests personally (sometimes even as late as 2 in the morning with prior approval and fee). When you arrive, the lights will be on and you will be welcomed and shown around the cabin. This is all we do 24/7 and we want all of our guests to have an amazing stay. We would be honored if you allow us the opportunity to serve you.

HOMEAWAY HAS CHANGED THEIR DEFAULT SETTINGS AND THE WEBSITE NOW CHARGES FOR KIDS THROUGH THE BOOK IT NOW OPTION. WE DO NOT CHARGE FOR KIDS UNDER 16. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BOOK THROUGH THE BOOK IT NOW BUTTON, JUST PUT THE NUMBER OF ADULTS. ADD A NOTE OF HOW MANY KIDS THERE ARE IN THE NOTES/MESSAGE SECTION AND WE WILL CHANGE IT IN THE RESERVATION. THIS WILL ALLOW YOU TO BOOK IT YOURSELF AND NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR THE KIDS. :)

Bear Ridge Cabin is a 100 year old real cabin that sits on a ridge above Rawley Springs. There is direct access to the George Washington National Forest within a couple of minutes right out the door of the cabin and we own all of the land between the cabin and the national forest. There are two rivers (one is small enough that you might call it a stream) that are about a 5-10 minute walk from the cabin. They both contain native Trout and one of them is stocked with Trout as well. Dry River (it never actually dries up) is one of the best Trout fishing rivers on the east coast.

There are several trails that are within walking distance of the national forest where hiking and mountain biking are allowed. One goes up into the mountains and the other is mostly level and follows the river for about 45 minutes and then heads up into the mountains.

There are also numerous hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and ATV trails within driving distance of the cabin.

The cabin has two bedrooms. The both ave queen sized beds. The bedrooms are not very large, but they are quaint and cozy. There is a queen couch bed inside and one outside on the screen porch. The cabin sleeps 6 inside in beds/couch bed if shared and 8 if using regular couches. the maximum occupancy is the amount of people we allow to stay not the amount that can sleep in beds. The nice sized living room with the original real stone, wood burning fireplace is a great place to gather with friends or sit and read when the weather turns colder. There is one bathroom with an older (1990's era) sit down shower. The kitchen has all newer stainless steel appliances, including a gas stove top. There is also a deck with a grill, charcoal. Guests are welcome to use it, The screen porch is nice sized and has two older couches and a chair as well as a table with seating for 5.

There is a queen size pull out couch in the living room and then another one one the screen porch. The pull out couch on the screen porch is older and not very comfortable, but it is an amazing place to sleep when the weather suits.

In the warmer months there is a floor model A/C unit that will cool down the cabin nicely. In the Winter there are several smaller heaters throughout the cabin that are able to keep the cabin warm enough even when the temperature drops below zero. We've had guests stay when it was -6 degrees and still be warm. There is also a wood burning fireplace, wood for a fee, can really warm up the cabin on cold days. The cabin windows are custom and made of real wood and they are very old and therefore there are no screens for them. We would also like to replace the three screen doors soon as well whereas they are older.

Pets are welcome but we do require a pet fee when pets stay at the cabin.

On clear nights, you can see thousands of stars overhead. It is a beautiful sight. Also during the spring and summer months, you can see humming birds everywhere. We place feeders off the front porch of the house and have personally seen upwards of 20 birds feeding on them at one time in the area.

Checking is 4:00 pm and checkout is 11 am.

Pets are welcome at all of our properties. If you or someone in your group is allergic to pets or anything else (detergent, air fresheners, etc), please let us know in advance so we can discuss this prior to your booking and then also prior to your arrival.

About Katie and Steven Robert Jones

We came to Virginia from Texas so I (Steven) could finish my college degree, but got into the vacation rental business by accident. :) We have 4 daughters under the age of 5. We have 6rescue dogs, 2 rescue cats, 2 ponies, 8 goats & about 50 chickens.

We believe service is what sets us apart in the vacation rental industry. Katie & I personally own every cabin that we manage. We check-in all of our guests personally (sometimes even as late as 2 or 3 in the morning with prior approval). When you arrive, the lights will be on and you will be welcomed and shown around the cabin, unlike most other rentals where you access a lock box and walk into a dark cold house. This is all we do 24/7 and we want all of our guests to have an amazing stay. We would be honored if you would allow us the opportunity to serve you.

Katie and Steven Robert Jones purchased this cabin in 2013

Why Katie and Steven Robert Jones chose Virginia

This cabin was very close to our cabins and also came with 8 acres of land that bordered the George Washington National Forest so it was a perfect fit with our other cabins.

What makes this cabin unique

This cabin feels very private and even has a natural spring fed pond on it complete with lots of tadpoles in Spring. Whippoorwills are very common in the Spring to early Summer months as are Hummingbirds. Also, there are 3 hiking trails within walking distance of the cabin and numerous others within a very short drive of the cabin.

Very nice, little cabin, with the most privacy out of the group(exept for firewood runs).

  • 3 of 5

The property was fairly easy to find but I had to contact the owner atleast 4 to 6 times over a two week period to try and get the address and check in information and didn't get a response untill the day before we were supposed to check in which is very frustrating for planning.

Upon arrival there was a 20 minute wait to be let in to our cabin(They personally greet you and show you the cabin/property) but the lady was very sweet and genuinely apologetic. The cabin was clean ( laundry was still in the dryer however) and very quiet.

It was a nice getaway for the value...I ended staying a extra day past my reservation.

Awesome Late Winter Get-A-Way

  • 5 of 5

This cabin is very nice for a couple to get away to. Katie was there to greet us when we arrived. Everything was perfect during our stay. We intend to reconnect with the owners of this cabin within the very near future to stay at other properties that they own. If you're searching for a nice cabin or vacation properties through Home Away, VRBO, or any other website this owner has listings with, search no more. You cannot get a better host than the one we had.

Thank you, Katie for your hospitality.

Meh.... So so

  • 4 of 5

So the cabin served its purpose as a place to stay but there were a few issues I couldn't ignore....

1) space heaters- it got down to the 20s and the space heaters didn't cut the mustard- tried to build a fire in the fireplace (avid camper here) and even after following instructions to push the grate back- we smoked ourselves out. It was very cold.

2) the dishes and pots and pans were dirty and we couldn't use them to cook even after cleaning bc they were too scratched (Teflon) or it was so burnt on it was hopeless... Went to dollar store to purchase our own to get through.

3) disruptions- the firewood for all the cabins owned by this renter is stacked below this cabin- so as people in other rentals ordered wood, there were constant flows of wood pickups even into the later evening....

Peaceful and wonderful !!!

  • 5 of 5

My fiancé and I had a wonderful mini vacation at your home. Although it was a little cold and rainy outside the warmth and coziness of the cabin helped you to forget all of that!. The cabin was clean and spacious. The owners returned my calls and text messages in a timely fashion when I had 2 issues to report. I wanted to report them to make sure I was wasn't blamed/ charged also so they could replace and repair for their next vacationers. All in all we had a wonderful time in the cabin surrounded by trees. I enjoyed my experienced in their home so much I'm planning a all girls weekend getaway in one of their properties in the next couple months.

Great place tucked away!

  • 4 of 5

Our mission for our long weekend was time in nature, time in God's word, and time to relax. Having visited Harrisonburg before, we knew some places to return to for fun in town (Billy Jack's, Oak Hill Cidery, 3 Brothers Brewery) but the majority of our girls' trip was spent at the cabin. The owners are super helpful and love what they do.

Because it is a 100 year old cabin, there were a few common issues like breakers/electricity - we only blew one breaker on the last day, so all was well - but be careful to use the outlets the owners have used, and in the kitchen, not to use coffee pot and toaster at the same time (for example).

Overall, make sure, if you're a cooking type, you bring in all that you'll need or are prepared to buy at the stores in town (there are plenty of cookware items to cook and even bake on).

For non-pet owners, if you have bad pet allergies, possibly consider another rental. My friend has pretty mild allergies so she was okay, but I noticed and reacted to the dander left behind some also.

Finally, we loved the place because we wanted rustic. We really liked the owners, and it's clear they try hard to keep their places well.

Excellent stay. The cabin was perfect for a long weekend. Fully equipped kitchen, nice living space, great fireplace, and the owners were delightful to work with. Highly recommended.
