The Isle of Palms, like all barrier islands, has a dynamic beach near the inlet that separates the island from Dewees Island. The ebb and flow of the changing tides, through the inlet, creates and moves sand bars just off shore. These sandbars will channel waves between them, resulting in the massive buildup of sand along portions of the island where other areas may develop temporary erosional hot spots. These hot spots will feature a sand beach throughout the day outside an hour or so before and after high tide. Where a dry sand beach may be limited in these few areas at high tide, walking either direction will lead to an area where the sandbars have created an expansive beach to enjoy at any tide.

Good place to stay, clean

  • 4 of 5

Everything was clean, it was very comfortable. The hallway is a little tight but that's minor. The driveway is probably the worst part of the property-there's a huge rut in it and it's a narrow drive, only suitable for 2, max 3 cars. The culdesac is quiet and wild dunes feels super safe!

Classic, casual, and roomy

  • 5 of 5

Great gathering space in this home, room for family meals and well equipped kitchen. Access to a grill as well. Two spacious master bedrooms and 2 additional bedrooms with 2 beds each. Television in each room. DVD player and wi-fi. Good quality bedding and room for personal belongings. Laundry facilities and outdoor showers, and great screened porch with seating. Home is clean and well cared for. Private setting. Easy short beach walk. Beach is broad with a slight incline toward sea that is great for children. Walkable distance to community pool, although hours are more limited than at smaller pools. It was a great spot for our family gathering and rental agency was really on the ball.

Comfortable, Well Equiped and Clean

  • 4 of 5

We were there celebrating my parents 50th Wedding Anniversary. My family of 5 shared this home with my sister and her 3 small children. The kitchen breakfast bar was a great addition as was the large screened in porch with the hammock. The 10 minute walk to the beach was easy (across the street was an L sharped gravel path) that led there. There are two outdoor hot/cold showers that would be a plus if there weren't so many mosquitoes. The laundry is outside under the house but it's an air conditioned room so it didn't really bother us. Everything being on one level was a plus since the bedrooms were down a hall away from the living area. We enjoyed our stay!!

Sweet place with a few challenges...

  • 4 of 5

So- first off, we are a family of 5 with 3 kids (6, 4, 1). - and a babysitter. I LOVED the layout- one story (no stairs!!!) and many bedrooms. The two masters are great, the other two bedrooms had two beds each and had a bathroom in the hall. I loved that we could close the door to the hallway when they were sleeping and not worrying about if they heard us in the living room! The porch was nice too! The kitchen is super well stocked and a great layout (overlooking the den). The walk to the beach was super quick and we used isle of palm beach chairs who set up right at the beachwood west walkway and it was great!!! The beds were comfy and bedding was great! Bathrooms aren't as updated, but are clean, functional, and add to the old charm of the house (I'm assuming built in the 60s but not sure- has been updated).

Now- a few other things. On the walkway to the beach- there were tons of ants! Just be careful walking! We had a small ant problem in the house that was remedied immediately by the rental agency and the sweetest pest control man. Very common for this time of year and we appreciated their promptness. Second- the house is surrounding by tons of trees and therefore, since we had some rain, was significantly more humid than places around us. It also held a TON of mosquitoes. We each had dozens of bites and they truly attacked each time we came outside or tried to get into the vehicle. I would recommend treating the area! Thirdly- the washer and dryer are not in the house- they are underneath. The room is clean and small- but I wasn't expecting outdoor laundry. Not a big deal- but worth mentioning. The pools are a bit of a walk away - but includes a sports cards that get you in to several after 3pm/4pm- only one you can use all day/anytime entry. Lastly- the house has a keypad to get in (no key requires) which is convenient- however beware of little people- there is no deadbolt to keep the littles from pulling the handle and opening the door to the porch (and the approximately 20 stairs you climb up to get to the front door). Our 1 year old could reach and pull down the handle and get outside quite quickly.

Overall- Lots of charm- LOVE the screened porch with the hammock and furniture. Would definitely rent again if they treat the area for mosquitoes.
