We live in the Black Hills of South Dakota in a place known as the Stratobowl. This geological wonder is carved from the combined effects of water erosion and the uplift of a fault line in the rugged Spring Creek canyon. Secluded and idyllic, the property is reminiscent of another era. Maybe it is the silence, the old limestone cliffs, or the song of the creek meandering through the seasons. As these ancient voices surround us, we breathe in all the natural beauty. Peace melts into our being and comes out as creative expressions. When the moon is full, the canyon becomes an illuminated, mystical experience. That is why, at one time, this place was named 'Moon Valley'. Then, in 1934 and 1935, the Army Air corps and National Geographic Society launched manned balloon flights into the stratosphere from here. It was then, that the family field aquired its new name of 'The Stratobowl' while becoming the birth place for the space age.
We so enjoyed our vacation. We felt welcome the moment we drove up. We highly recommend this vacation spot.
I took the family on our first South Dakota trip, and wanted to make it extra special.
I wanted to find lodging that would be a part of the vacation and not just a place to sleep, and I found exactly that in this vacation home. A lot of the fun of this vacation was just being at this home. The kids loved the exploration of the land. The wild life that encompassed the property was so nice The peaceful mornings on the patio and quiet nights back in the home, just made every day a non-stop joy, and when we did go out and see the sites, you were already well on your way in this location. You were close to all the main roads that lead to the main destinations of the Black Hill. I couldn’t imagine staying anywhere else
Ken and Cory are fortunate to be able to share such a beautiful piece of land with guests from all around. Not only was the location of the house so unique and peaceful but it was very clean and well maintained. We had nothing but a great experience using this property as a home base while exploring a lot of what the Black Hills has to offer. The professionalism and warm hospitality of the hosts was a bonus on top of what we found to be a the perfect vacation home for our family!
Excellent vacation home. Everything you need plus more. Comfortable, inviting and peaceful. The home is close to all the tour attractions, places to eat and shopping. Ken and Cory greeted us upon our arrival. They shared information on the property and surroundings. Very nice people.
The location of this property is in a canyon with a creek running through it. Wild life surrounds you. Beautiful. We loved sitting out on the decks and watching the wildlife and listening to the babbling of the creek.
Beds very comfortable. Air conditioning worked great. Bathtub is the best! Our 8 year daughter slept in the loft and made it her "girl cave". She loved it up there especially at night gazing at the night sky through the skylight.
Swimming hole assisted in keeping us cooled and entertained.
I would highly recommend this place to everyone. It is private, relaxing, clean and close to all the activities. Thank you Ken and Cory for allowing us to stay at the "BE house". It was the best week ever:)
This was our first experience using VRBO and we hit the jackpot with this beautiful home. The owners communicated promptly and very helpful at check in. Our family of (4 adults and 2 kids) fit perfect in this home. The location of this house was perfect for all the tourism places. The surrounding wilderness was breathe taking beautiful. Just opening the windows and hearing the roaring of the creek and being surrounded by nature puts you immediately on vacation. Our family enjoyed fishing in the creek and hiking along the trails. The only recommendation we have is to pick the bedroom with the loft. The bed is the better choice for sleeping and the other bed should be replaced. We would definitely recommend this home. Thank you for allowing us to use your home to experience the best vacation in South Dakota.
Greeted by Ken and Cory and experiencing their property filled with animal life and nature, was an amazing beginning. They shared the history of the 80 acres surrounding the properties and gave a personal tour. The vacation rental is right in the middle of the most peaceful and tranquil setting and totally private. No matter what your needs or wants are, you will be pleased you chose this location. The house is roomy, comfortable beds, equipped kitchen, games to play, and moves to watch at the end of your day.The girls, 9 year old twins, loved the surrounding nature and near by creek for play. The location was perfect for us to drive up and down the road between all the sites of Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, Jewel Cave, Badlands, and Rapid City. Nothing was too far away. Our entire trip was outstanding and having such a wonderful place to stay just added to all the fabulous memories.
The only "heads-up" I would give is; if your cell service is NOT AT&T then you will have no cell service until you get back to the main road. We were able to receive text messages periodically.
Surrounded by rugged terrain. Twenty minutes from Mount Rushmore, 40 minutes to Crazy Horse Memorial.
