We are Maine residents and live on nearby Cousin's Island. We enjoy outdoor activities and being on the ocean. This is the best summer state in the nation for a vacation in our opinion.
Jason Kendeigh purchased this cottage in 2004
The cottage is close by and very accessible, even though it is on an island. Just far enough away to feel like you have traveled to a vacation get away yet close enough to Portland that you have all the city amenities with shopping and great restaurants.
The local community is fantastic. Between summer people and the 300 year round residents, you have a healthy mix of fishermen, trades, and vacationers.
There are great beaches to explore and a low tide walk over a long sandbar to Little Chebeague Island that is a must. Deer Point has hiking on a rocky shoreline that is simply quintessential Maine scenery.
Biking on the island is very fun to explore the 3 mile by 5 mile landscape. Riding to the Clam Shack for lunch, dinner, or ice cream is a given. Heading to the Chebeague Inn for a sunset beverage on the porch or a very nice dinner inside or out. Stopping by the small island market is always a treat to see what is going on with island events and usually running into island characters.
The local library has many books and movies to borrow and also has wi-fi access just in case you do need to check in on your daily life.
We had a wonderful girls week. We enjoyed the quaintness of the cottage and the comfort. The owners were very pleasant when we made the reservation. I never usually like to write reviews but we had such a wonderful week I had to write one. We are already looking forward to going again next year!
We rented the house for a heavenly 2 weeks of beautiful sunsets, strolling on the shore, kayaking, relaxing, and good eating! Our 15-year old daughter totally got the charm, and rode her bike daily to the island farm stand where she bought delicious, just-picked produce. We had lobster about every 3 days, fresh off the dock at the boatyard. The "locals" couldn't be more warm and welcoming - we eventually mastered the island "wave", which everyone gives to everyone! Stepping onto the island of Chebeague is like stepping back into a simpler time - it gave us the opportunity to really unwind, enjoy nature, and spend time "unplugged" with each other.
The house is charming, with all of the amenities we needed, including an outdoor shower. I would highly recommend this house.
We spent a fun and relaxing week at this cottage last summer, and had a wonderful time. The cottage was comfortable and clean. It has the feel of a traditional Maine cottage, but with some modern amenities (like the bathroom - very nice!)
The porch is a nice place to have coffee in the morning, play board games on foggy days and have dinner in the evening. It also has a view of the nightly sunsets. But to really appreciate their beauty, walk down to the beach or the edge of the yard. They are impressive!
The beach is a short walk from the house and is a nice place to just hang out. When the tide is in, it's perfect for swimming, and when it's out, it's fun to explore the shallows. Our kids had a ball digging clams, which also made for a delicious dinner. We also had fun using the kayaks. They are easy to use and the water was calm along the shore, so paddling was no problem, even for our twelve year old. It is peaceful and beautiful on the water.
Chebeague is small enough to easily get around by bicycle, and it's fun to explore. Indian Point is nearby, and is a pretty place to walk, especially at low tide. We enjoyed the relaxed nature of the island. It really let us feel like we were "away".
I would certainly recommend the cottage to friends, relatives and anyone else who is looking for a relaxing time in a beautiful place. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there, and look forward to returning. Even our teenagers look forward to going back, and that's saying something!
My husband and I (and on occasion our son as well) have stayed at this cottage several summers in a row for extended weekends and we absolutely love it!! It has a beautiful view, peace and quiet, a beach, and many nature type activities to do such as biking, kayaking, fishing, boating, etc. Since we live in a city, what I love most is the nature and quietness of the location. It is perfect for "unplugging", taking nature walks, reading books, and just enjoying conversation and beverages on the front porch. We enjoy grilling and cooking our own food while there, but there is also The Chebeague Island Inn for more fancier dinners, and the local Clam Shack, a no frills great little place to get fried seafood, burgers, and ice cream and dine outdoors on picnic tables! It is the perfect way to experience the southern coast of Maine, surrounded by nature and the beautiful ocean, with plenty of outdoor activities to keep you busy, or a quiet retreat just to rest and relax. We highly recommend it!!
