Like much of Italy, Casale Cerfoglio, near Todi, is a mix of old and new. Originally a 15th-century church, the property was transformed into a casale, or country house, and eventually into the modern eight-bedroom luxury villa that it is today. While its close enough to explore the historic towns of Umbria, simply walking through the house is a journey through the past.
The villas manicured grounds are surrounded by cypress and olive groves, with views of the countrysides rolling hills beyond. Take in the panorama from the pool and its row of chaise longues, or the sitting and dining areas on the covered terrace. Work up a sweat in the fitness center or sauna, choose your entertainment from the movie and music collections and stay connected via Wi-Fi access. For convenience and comfort, theres also a pool house, printer and copier, and air conditioning.
The propertys history has been preserved in its architecture: 15th-century church walls and arches in the living and dining areas, a 16th-century bathroom sink, 18th-century bedroom doors and a 19th-century mantel over the living room fireplace. Even in newer spaces, wood panels nod to the beamed ceilings of the past, and the two fully equipped kitchens have both state-of-the-art ranges and old-fashioned wood-burning ovens. Today, the rooms are filled with traditional-style, neutral-toned furniture and contemporary art for a bright, clean feel.
Each of the eight bedrooms at Casale Cerfoglio has an en-suite bathroom and air conditioning. There are five bedrooms with double beds, one of which has its own dressing room with a daybed. Two bedrooms have two twin beds each, and another bedroom with three twin beds can be used by either children or adults.
From the villa, its just over 2 miles to the nearest restaurants and an equestrian center. A 5-mile drive will bring you to a supermarket, shops, bank and train station, a 6-mile drive will take you to Todi, where you can rent mountain bikes, and an 8-mile drive will bring you to the tennis court. Spoleto is 23 miles away, Orvieto is 28 miles away, Perugia and a golf course are 30 miles away, and Assisi is 38 miles away.

Everything was perfect and all the services were amazing.
Just one comment about the keyholder of the house - Anna. She was not joinable the day we came, she never called nor showed up. She came to make sure everything was ok 5 minutes before we left the last day. Anyway we did not need her help as Giovanna was outstanding!
Graziella and Lina, the cooks were also amazing, and their food was delicious. We enjoyed also their company.
This is our second visit to Casale Cerfoglio, and we returned for two reasons. One, the villa is the perfect blend of historic and updated. Second, the Villa host, Giovanna, goes above and beyond to make the visit the ulitmate in a luxurious Italian vacation.
San Silvestro is a unique property with a rich history. It is updated to provide modern conveniences but does not lose any charm or authenticity. The grounds are stunning, with a 360 degree panaramic view from every window. The ouside living areas are spectacular. Best of all is Giovanna, the hostess, and the staff of San Silvestro. They were not only friendly and accomodating, but went above and beyond to treat us like family. However, there is definitely a disconnect between the concierge and the on-site staff - causing us to incur unnecessary charges (i.e. for a chef). It would be helpful to communicate directly with the on-site manager prior to the visit.
