"Mostly" retired couple (businessman and writer) with three cats, live nearby, love this forested acreage on the beach where you can relax, write, paint, read, walk, golf, explore. He grew up in Vancouver, she in Powell River, up the coast. Lived in Hong Kong for 20 years then moved here. It's so nice to be settled on the west coast!
The Owner purchased this cottage in 2010
We live nearby, the property is five minutes from Sechelt but is very private with big trees behind and beach in front. Imagined writing and relaxing, cooking over the fire pit, going for a run or renting a kayak nearby, driving or walking to the popular provincial campground nearby at Porpoise Bay, mountain biking at Coast Gravity Park, or going to the many local artists in the area who put up a purple flag at their driveways to show they are open for busines.
The sandy beach is great for swimming and shelling. Love sitting out on the large lawn watching the float planes come in or the birds and eagles bathe in the freshwater stream nearby. The fire pit is great for outdoor cooking and evening relaxing while the sun sets.
My husband and I stayed at Grumpy Cat Cottage for 12 nights, with our adult children and their dogs visiting for part of that stay. We found the cottage to be exactly as described; clean, comfortable, and the large property and waterfront area was enjoyed every day of our stay. It was wonderful to be able to have bonfires in the evenings (the fire ban was lifted) and John provided lots of firewood. Leslie and John left a surprising amount of groceries in the cottage which made us feel even more welcomed. We loved Sechelt and the surrounding areas and totally enjoyed exploring the many beaches and parks in that part of the Sunshine Coast. As adults, we were all very comfortable at Grumpy Cat; however, we did find the noise from the seaplanes very loud and irritating which is something one probably gets used to in time. There was also a lot of hammering and banging going on during the day from house construction next door; again, there was nothing John or Leslie could do about that and by next summer that intrusion should be a thing of the past. I would certainly come back to Grumpy Cat Cottage again but I would not bring small children or the elderly there IF needing to use the 'loft' bedroom for them. It is simply too hazardous of a climb for small children or anyone with a disability. The other two bedrooms on the main floor are perfectly comfortable. Knowing that John and Leslie were next door was a comfort if we needed anything, but they gave us our privacy and we never felt 'watched'. Overall, our vacation was a bounding success and we would love to return to Sechelt again in the near future. Thanks John and Leslie; Grumpy Cat Cottage is a lovely property.
The Grumpy Cat cottage was everything we expected from the ad. When we arrived they had left some groceries for our first breakfast and snack items which was great since we hadn't made it to the store yet. We probably had the best beach there, while Sechelt is beautiful, many of the beaches are only rocks, however, the beach by the cottage has a lovely sandy beach which we used everyday. The kids spent hours looking for shells and exploring especially when the tide was out. The cottage is cute and homey and was the perfect size for us. I would definitely recommend this rental to others and even go back some day. Thank-you for the wonderful stay : )
This is a delightful place. The cottage is cozy and well-appointed. The location is wonderful. The care taken by the owners to prepare the cottage for each renter is thoughtful and thorough. I will go back whenever I can.
The cottage lies at the edge of a low bank on the beach. A large meticulously kept lawn with flower beds surrounds the house and one drives down a long forest lane to gain access. The location is virtually silent. We heard and saw lots of eagles, squirrels, a deer, hummingbirds, butterflies, geese and herons. There are some small patches of barnacles for bare feet and dog paws to avoid. Water is very clean and deeper water is quite a few meters out.
The owners have totally renovated an old cottage, providing modern appliances, but rebuilding with recycled materials. It is a “house of all sorts” with reclaimed ship-lap and tongue and groove used as wall cladding. A vaulted ceiling. Lovely bright wood flooring. The materials are old but spotlessly clean and the recycled wood is complemented by fresh white paint. Our first impression was that the house was rather basic but as we acclimatized to the building we appreciated how much thought Leslie and John had put into its rebirth. We visited rainy mid June and felt comfortable feeding the airtight Jotul woodstove just about every day. The cottage is only rented in warmer weather as it is not insulated. The wonderful aroma of woodsmoke outside transported us to another era. We found ourselves constantly thinking of the provenance of the recycled items such as the bathroom shelf that likely was a high school woodwork project forty years ago.
The third bedroom upstairs is as funky as the rest of the cottage. However it is necessary to climb up a “ladder” to reach it. Kids with bare feet (for traction) would love it upstairs. It is again spotless (with mosquito screens) but also looks like grandma’s cottage from the 40s. I liked that look.
There are lots of cooking utensils but much of the cookware and the dishes come from mixed sets in style with the house. The cottage is rated for sleeping eight but the eating area is small and there is only one bathroom. Our bed felt shaky to start with but turned out like the rest of the cottage to be very comfortable.
We two felt very much at home and cooked most of our own meals. Leslie and John had generously stocked the fridge with basic provisions and a couple of bottles of wine. The cottage is a great place for a couple plus kids and a dog. A great place to launch a kayak and up the road is a fascinating land based sturgeon farm. I can also heartily recommend Rockwater Resort restaurant just north of Secret Cove. $$
