About Carolyn Slone
This house compliments our other weekly rental at 620 Broadway.
Why Carolyn Slone chose South Haven
South Haven has an awesome beach and is only a 2 hour drive from Chicago. Metro Detroit are only 2-3 hours away, so it is a great midwestern resort location. The harbor town is so close that we walk to everything once we are there and the City of South Haven has a great lineup of festivals and attractions happening all summer long. Golf is about the only thing we drive for and there are plenty of great courses right nearby.
What makes this House unique
The 2 porches are a magnet for people from the first coffee in the morning until late at night. Plus 2 bicycles and a basketball hoop in the driveway come with the rental!

Great vacation house
For the third year in a row, we have stayed here with two families (6 kids) and have enjoyed our stay
Great spot for a large family
This was our second time renting this property. The kids really enjoyed the pool which was great because Lake Michigan was cold! We love being able to walk to the beach, 3 different playgrounds and the beach.
We are glad that the your family had another great vacation!
We were all very pleased with our stay
Thanks! Great family vacations are what we are aiming for.
Great place to stay
We stayed for a week s/kids & grandkids. Beautiful home in a beautiful area. Kids had a blast.
Thanks Kristine! Great family vacations are what we are aiming for!
Comfortable, Easy, and Lots of Amenities
This was perfect for our family (4 families: 8 adults and 8 kids). The house was plenty big for all of us and we were thrilled that everyone had a bed! There wasn’t an easy way for all 16 to sit together in one room for a meal or conversation (but there are several smaller spaces for smaller groupings), but the front porch was great for morning coffee and poolside/patio was great for the afternoon where most of us fit and could be together.
The house is very comfortable: there are plenty of towels, utensils, pots and pans....so it was easy to live there for a week. The house is not new, but it was very clean and well-maintained. The microwave didn’t work and Carolyn brought us a new one within 24 hours. She was there to greet us and make sure we knew everything we needed to know and I knew she was just a phone call away.
The only thing that is not clearly explained in the listing is that to get to the backyard/pool/patio, you have to go up 3 steps inside the house, then open a door, and go down 3 other steps outside the house. It is totally functional and do-able, but it was a little awkward for family members with limited mobility and/of if I had drinks in my hand. The other option of getting to the backyard doesn’t have as many steps, but involves going out a side door and through a fence/gate area: also difficult with drinks.
We thought it was easy to get to the beach each day: One person drove a car with all of our gear & the rest of us biked. The beach was more crowded that we would have liked, but it was a holiday week, so that is to be expected. There are 2 really nice parks/playgrounds near by and the kids loved that, too.
Everyone said they’d love to return next year.
We are glad that your group had a great time at the Sunny Side Retreat! We are replacing the table on the back deck with an even larger one seating 12 people for next summer.
A Sunny Fun Family Stay
Carolyn's property was clean, well-located, and worked out great for our family ages 4 mos to 91 yrs. It was the first time some of us had vacationed together and the house offered enough space to be together or apart as needed. Only two bedrooms downstairs and rather steep stairs to second floor which might cause a problem for people with mobility issues. The upstairs room with futon and television was a nice place for early rising children. The screened porch was also great for early morning risers and late night card and Scrabble players. We enjoyed the backyard pool and the table fit 8 adults and toddlers. Carolyn's property description was accurate. We used the bikes, wagon, and some beach toys. The 2 and 3.5 year olds loved the playground just a few blocks down the street towards the lake. The wagon at the house was great for walking to South Beach. Nice playground there, too. Do check in with the daily beach reports. On 2 consecutive days South Beach was closed for swimming due to water quality. It was no problem. We loaded up the car and headed over to North Beach which was even better, Took family morning walks into town straight down Kalamazoo Street for coffee and donuts and a view of the river and marina. We enjoyed The Living Room Cafe for coffee and The Golden Brown Bakery for donuts and cookies. Most places don't take reservations. We ate earlier at Captain Lou's and then ordered take out from Clementines. Both meals were good. Had to have my Lake Perch. Meijer's was our go to for groceries.
Carolyn gave helpful information about the area and was easily reached when we needed her.
So glad that the house was what you needed for a great vacation! Our crew works hard to keep it this way.
A park with baseball diamond, indoor bathrooms, fountains, and giant wooden playscape is 3 blocks away. A farmer's market is open every Saturday in South Haven's municipal parking lot downtown. Numerous fishing charters operate out of the Shouth Haven harbor. There is also fishing off of the pier. The Michigan Maritime Museum operates lake cruises on their tall masted ship 2 times a day from their dock in the harbor. They also offer tours of the harbor and Black River aboard their antique reproduction touring launch. Boat, dinghy, and kayak rentals can also be arranged in town. Hawkeshead public golf course is a short drive away in South Haven.
