John is a 'many generation Mainer' ( Civil War land grant)and has always dreamed of having a 'salt-water farm'. We acquired 5.5acres on the bay 24yrs. ago and were finally able to move herein 2001.He calls it 'paradise'.,and his many fruit trees attest to that .I like the flowers and he does the veggies and fruits. The yard is a good size for kids to be safe and able to run around. We have a resident horse named Mirage:Raj for short who is friendly and likes an occasional carrot or apple A swing set is waiting for the little ones
We have lived in Maine for 47 yrs.,previously the Bangor area. John has recently retired from an embroidery and garment decorating business decorating business, and Iam a retired R.N. ; he loves farming and has always dreamed of having a saltwater farm. This came true when we purchased our present 5.5acres. He has restored John Deere tractors as a hobby and uses them here.We both garden; I love the flowers and he does vegetables and fruits. He has also restored a John Alden wooden sailboat which moors out front. We also have a mooring available if needed.
Liz purchased this cottage in 1991
We chose Newbury Neck for it's beauty and quiet. It's in a great area surrounded by small Maine towns with much charm- you'll love exploring.
I was looking for a quiet place to spend a week with my girls (12 and 15) that would be peaceful, fun, and close enough to Bar Harbor to visit but far enough to feel like we were getting away from it all. I really could not have found a more perfect place; John and Liz made us feel so welcomed it was like being in our own home, not a rental, right from the start. The house itself is really beautifully situated; the beach is right down a path out the back steps, the sun sparkles through the windows in the mornings, the stars sparkle at night and the waves, when it's windy, will put you to sleep. It's on a hushed country road with few cars; the quiet in the air is stunning, especially at night. We also fell in love with the dogs - especially Maddie, who we miss - it was like a fringe benefit!
Everything we needed was there; bikes to ride and wood for the outdoor fire pit and even fresh eggs from the chickens. We stopped at Tradewinds in Blue Hill on the way for food - which I recommend - but the cottage has what you would need otherwise - towels and sheets and blankets and a kitchen stocked with the basics, pots and pans and utensils, washer/dryer, dishwasher, etc. Pretty much whatever you need is there, making it a lot easier to unpack and unwind. Liz and John are great hosts, the house is sweet and cozy, and it was as perfect a week as I could have imagined. If you are trying to avoid the bustle of Bar Harbor but want to be close enough to get there for dinner or day trips (about 45 minutes), you can't do better. Liz also recommended a boat trip in Bass Harbor (Island Cruises) which was an absolute must, a great way to spend an afternoon. Thanks Liz and John for helping us make lifelong memories, we hope to come back!
This spacious cabin offers privacy & comfort. The entrance to Daybreak Lane is tastefully landscaped with arrays of form & color, artfully placed rock walls & a soothing meditation garden. The beach offers solace & gifts, as the surf bathes the sand. Sea glass, star fish, driftwood, await discovery. Vistas of clouds, water & mountains fill me with gratitude as i walk the beach with my collective of women. We have gathered here on several occasions. The hosts are always gracious. The house is clean & well equipped so that we walk in and take over. Liz even brought her personal coffee maker to us when it became apparent that the cottage's coffee unit was not functioning. Thank you again, Liz & John, for being such stewards of the land. I feel that Daybreak Lane Cottage is my home away from home & i look forward to when i will visit again.
A perfect place. Beautifully equipped. Gorgeous views and delightful owners. Well situated for exploring Acadia National Park and the Blue Hill Penninsula. We especially appreciated the Vermont Castings wood stove, with wood supplied by John. Would rent this "cottage" - more like a house - again in a heartbeat. Clare
We stayed at Liz and John's beautiful cottage in June of 2013. I don't know that I'd call it a cottage with 3 bedrooms and 3 full bathrooms and enough space for everyone to stretch out at the end of the day when your kids need a break from each other (and frankly the adults too)!
Words cannot express the wonder of this place. Not only did my husband and I fall in love with it, our kids did too and for so many different reasons.
1. The sounds of the waves crashing against the very private beach.
2. The sunrises in the morning over Acadia are spectacular.
3. The lovely back deck and lawn area where we ate dinner many nights after grilling something fresh from the market in Blue Hill (20 minutes away).
4. The general sense of hominess and happiness that settles in your skin when your there, the cool art on the walls and the interesting brick-a-brack that can be found throughout.
5. The kindness and friendliness of Liz and John.
6. The lovely and rural road the property is on that's perfect for bike rides, even to the lobster shack that's about 1.5 miles down the road and serves amazing fresh lobster.
7. The cool graveyard not too far down the road with some fantastic tombstones (look for the prophecy on one of the first stones upon entering the graveyard).
6. Their crew of wonderful pets (who will give you plenty of space if you're not pet people, but love some attention if you are).
7. And of course all of the creature comforts: a washer and dryer so you don't have to pack as many clothes, three full bathrooms for all four of us, a dishwasher so we didn't have to scrub all our dishes after dinner, a full kitchen, a great living room and the awesome game room with a beautiful pool table.
I'm sure I'm missing too many things in this description, but this is THE place to stay. It's not crazy and overwhelming like Bar Harbor and you have tons of day trip opportunities: Acadia and Bar Harbor in about 40 minutes (learn the shortcut through Ellsworth via Water Street), Blue Hill and Ellsworth (make sure to stop in at Morton's Moo!) are about 20 minutes, and Castine is about 50 minutes but is a must see!
I cannot express enough how much all four of us loved this place. At different points in time each one of us mentioned how much we'd love to live here. The sense of well-being settles in as soon as you drive in and stays with you well after you leave.
Thank you Liz and John
Dear Liz, Your lovely cottage has once again replenished my soul and refreshed my pocketful of memories. Also, thank you for so promptly mailing my personal items which i left behind as i floated on down the quiet road, bald eagle soaring along just above me. Peace. Elektra
Our stay in Surry was delightful as well as peaceful. The property was immaculate, the three bedroom cottage provided ample space for our family. My daughter and I enjoyed walking by the water and looking at the magnificent view of the mountains. We also loved the beautiful flowers that were planted on the property and even got a chance to sample some of the delicoius vegetables in the garden. We were provided with kayaks and bikes during our stay there.
There was much to see in Maine and we were we given information that filled our days with many activities that blew our socks off and made this vacation one that we look foward to doing again for many years.
