Best Porch on the Lake!
Wonderful lakeshore cabin hidden in the trees across from Windy Point on the big basin of Lake Travis. Not a party house, but great for a retreat, reconnecting, writing, or just enjoying the views, including the daily trip of our great blue heron and other gifts of nature.
Two bedrooms and two bathrooms on opposite sides of the house, great-
room and kitchen in the middle—all rooms have a view of lake and access to the screened in porch (the best porch on the lake).
Renovated and enlarged two years ago with design by one of Austin’s recognized architects. Stone steps lead down to a deck at waters edge (when the drought is over). Now there is a ‘beach’ with fossil shells and other ‘treasures’.
Great for two couples or parents with children of school age or older. No small children or pets. Minimum stay of two nights,
Coming out RR 2222, left on 620, right on HUDSON BEND RD. then right on HORNSBY HILL RD. (actually straight on road that has no outlet sign). Twenty-five minutes from Mopac and Balcones Dr. List of restaurants furnished.
What a fantastic get-away we had during Labor Day Weekend with our family of 4. When you first walk into the house, the first thing that comes to your mind is "Wow, what a view!" The first thing you see behind the living room is Lake Travis with trees that surround the back patio. What comes to mind is that you aren't really in Texas. Think of Puget Sound in Washington state. It seems hard to believe, but you really don't feel like you are in Texas.
The house has a feel to it that you are at a ski lodge in Colorado and has a very comfortable and charming feel to it. Some of the other comments are correct....you feel like you are in a treehouse. If you want to feel like you are getting away from everyone and everything, this is your place. It is secluded and nobody will bother you.
As for some of the other comments I had previously read about this house not being good enough for a VRBO property, that is just not true. In fact, those comments are ridiculous! I'm sorry, but these folks must have had some different expectations and were looking for something that is trendy, fast and contemporary. This is NOT what this experience is about. If you want marble and statues throughout, then go somewhere else. Go somewhere else down the road and get what you can get anywhere.
The house could use some new pots and pans and a few utensils but outside of that, this is one of the most pleasant and wonderful trips you could take. Our family highly recommends this rental! Just a fantastic experience.
Yes, the house had the rustic Austin feel, But lots of neglect. The 2nd night i saw mice around the fireplace and behind the storage cabinet. I did not feel comfortable using anything in the kitchen, and cobwebs everywhere.
Please hire some professionals to give the house a Good Cleaning.
I would not stay here again...
The property was amazing. While the house is a little dated (built in 70s), the views could not be beat. Two master suites, one on either side of the house. Amazing patio and seating. Great deck at the bottom of the hill. If I'm back in the area, I'd definitely consider this property again.
The home is located up the small hill from the water. The yard has a very natural untouched feel.
The house almost feels like a tree house when you are inside looking out at the lake.
Everything was in good condition and clean.
I would stay there again if I get a chance.
The owner was helpful and answered any questions we had.
Restaurants and park with a boat ramp are close and convenient.
The property is really beautiful. Trees are covering everything. The stone path down to the water is almost magical. All the sky lights really help to keep the place bright and the full length windows and screened porch provide an unbelievable view. We have a family of four with twin 5 year old girls. The house was a perfect size for us. Don't expect to sleep much more than that though. The couch looks new and is comfortable but it's not a pull out. A child or small adult could sleep on it if necessary. The place is pretty rustic. We encountered several broken chairs, cob webs, dirty windows and burned out light bulbs. The beds are not comfortable, even in the new additional bedroom. You can see the two twin mattresses sloping in at the middle (no box springs). Showers weren't really hot either. We actually loved that there was no TV. It made for a really quiet weekend. Wifi is available but not super strong. The kitchen has everything you need and the grill is great. Overall, we really enjoyed our time. We are pretty laid back and weren't super upset by the rustic atmosphere. It is apparent that someone either lives there or spends a lot of time there. You'll find personal stuff all over. Again, didn't bother us but don't think this place is a barren VRBO home. I gave it 3 starts just for balance of positive and negative things we experienced here. We did enjoy our stay though.
The location was just what we were looking for, right on the lake with the feel of our own private retreat. But the house needs a lot of work. As others have mentioned, there are plenty of cobwebs and critters. IF the house gets cleaned, they must just do sinks, toilets, and bed linens... But...
- The coffee maker had not been cleaned in awhile; it had mold growing in the filter tray.
- The kitchen drawer containing eating utensils had mouse droppings in it. Before we used anything in the kitchen, we had to clean it first.
- The runner on the dining table had mouse droppings on it when we arrived, which we cleaned, but there were more the next day. We did see a couple mice run and hide behind the cabinet that is to the left of the fireplace.
- There was a cobweb up high over the main couch, and the remains of the spider's victims dropped down right in the middle of the couch. We cleaned it several times before we realized where it was coming from. We didn't sit on that couch after that.
- Several lights in the house are burnt out, especially in the kitchen; we had to use a flashlight after dark (I was glad I brought one.)
- There are several pieces of broken/torn furniture/chairs around. Fix them or trash them! They could be safety hazards if used and they make the house look too cluttered.
The house reminded me of camping trips to truly rustic locations, where you expect to have to clean everything upon arrival. But we expected more from this VRBO. The house has SO much potential with its unique design and view, but it was disappointing, what a shame. We left all food items in the fridge or in our car, to protect it from critters, and ate on paper plates that we bought. If you're an outdoorsy type, like camping, and don't mind cleaning everything before you use it, this place is an upgrade from a tent or state park cabin, with a great view and location. That is how we had to look at it. But this was our 30th wedding anniversary weekend, and we had wanted to be able to arrive and relax - not clean house first! Please hire some professionals to give the house a GOOD THOROUGH cleaning (plus clean ALL of the dishes, utensils, cupboards, and drawers), and get an exterminator to treat and evict the rodents. The neglected house and future guests deserve that.
