We have lived in Silver City since moving our family here from Seattle, WA 20 years ago. We love this community and are excited about introducing others to this beautiful region of southwest New Mexico! There is always something fun happening, beautiful places to visit and lots of history. Grant County is truly an eclectic place with friendly, creative and interesting people. We invite you to check it out.
Faye or Floyd McCalmont purchased this house in 2010
Silver City is a unique and wonderful place that draws creative and interesting people to it. We wanted to own a small intimate home where visitors could feel welcome while experiencing the beauty of the surrounding area. The central location of the house makes it the perfect jumping off point for day trips or evening events.
It' a short walk to restaurants and shops as well as the park where many events are held thoughout the year. The house is small and intimate, warm and inviting - a perfect retreat for those wishing to escape into a welcome and convenient environment. Five local coffee shops, bakery, deli, museums, murals, art galleries and studios make for wonderful day trips.
My son and I found the charming house to e a perfect fit. This was a great vacation in Silver City. Within minutes to shops, grocery stores, hospital, university, gym and senior center and so much more!
The location is pleasant and the birds each morning chirping and seen nearly every day - we also enjoyed the rock patio. Finding trails to walk and even a hot springs for a soak.
Now seeing the city blooming with beautiful trees! We have taken photos of the house and the various places.
Thank you both for the relaxing, comfortable home away from home.
I stayed at this property for a month, I am a smokejumper that worked in silver for the fire season and I can say that the owners were very accommodating and nice. The house had everything that was needed and was very clean. If I choose to head back to silver I will definitely stay here again.
This home is a little jewel, charming inside and out, and suited us, a retired couple, perfectly. It has comfortable beds and furniture and plenty of chairs for either bedroom use or as extra seating in the living room. We like to cook in and loved the expansive kitchen counter area, the 3 bar stools, and the well functioning stove. The cupboards held a variety of pots and pans that fit all our cooking needs, as well as a variety of basic food products for seasoning, salad dressings, and marinating. The top quality Weber barbecue grill on the back patio was wonderfully sized for grilling for us and our invited dinner guests, the Asahi Muur Zero bike team from Japan here for the Tour of the Gila bike race. We had one cooler evening and used the heat. The house warmed quickly and quietly. The owner was always available by phone or e-mail even though she was out of state during our stay. We liked the location, with easy access to shopping and local historical sights and hiking trails. A good supply of area information was available. This is a wonderful and welcoming home, and we hope to return again to enjoy the friendly local people and to visit more local attractions.
I stayed at the Custom Retreat Cottage for one month while working in Silver City. It was a challenge to find a good place that allowed a (well-behaved) dog - this place was great! Very clean throughout with comfortable bed and furniture, compact kitchen with everything needed to cook meals, even nice, sharp knives - a rarity with VRBO rentals. The central heat worked instantly for chilly mornings. Good water pressure in shower. Lots of storage, closet space. Off street parking was nice. Full size washer and dryer in separate new structure right outside. The location is good - not in the historic neighborhood, but close to it and to everything else, 4 block walk up to a bit of open space for the dog, very close to the hospital for work. The back yard is fenced only on 3 sides and does not have grass - currently packed dirt, but worked fine for pre-dog walk and quick lunch time outings for my dog. This place was very nice to come home to and only a 10 minute drive to great hiking (Gomez Peak area at end of Little Walnut Road) in Gila National Forest. The owners were great - very flexible with change of dates I needed to make, easy check in and prompt return of deposit. I would most certainly stay here again!!!
We spent a wonderful three months in Silver City and would highly recommend this lovely cottage. It was comfortable with a well-equipped kitchen and a great sitting / outdoor grilling area in the back yard. In a friendly neighborhood, the cottage was within walking distance to restaurants and Silver's historic downtown. The owners were great to work with, both before we arrived and during our stay. We enjoyed the area's hiking, arts culture and terrific restaurants and will definitely be back for a future visit. Thanks!
Everything about this cottage was perfect...and the location especially quiet; you could hear a pin drop. The owner was pleasant, very accommodating, and extremely helpful with information about the area. She was available every time I called. I would highly recommend this cottage without any hesitation!
What a beautiful job the McCalmonts have done on this cottage. It is very comfortable and clean, and it's location makes it easy to either walk or drive. The washer and dryer are full size - a real plus when doing bed linens, etc. Our only complaint was no dining table and chairs and Faye has remedied that.
Silver City is one of the friendliest towns we know. As volunteers at Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument we used the town to shop and were always impressed by the people we met. Staying for a month only confirmed what we had experienced on day trips. The people are lovely.
And you are on the doorstop of the world's first designated wilderness area - the Gila, a place of extraordinary beauty and interest. A day trip to the Cliff Dwellings is well worth it.
We highly recommend the cottage and the McCalmonts and look forward to our next visit.
