Overview

Virginia House Rental Photos and Description

House, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 5 adults, children welcome) central heat/air

Quietude Cottage offers privacy without being isolated. (See Quietude Cottage's FaceBook page for more photos of house and area.) You will love returning to the cottage after your day of exploring the Shenandoah Valley. Located in Mount Sidney, VA, Quietude is a 1920s seven room cottage style house, with original wood floors throughout. Partially open walls in the living areas create an inviting space. The cottage is located on 1 1/2 acres and there are 4 soothing water features. Take time to swing on the front porch or beside one of the goldfish ponds. (Keep watchful eye over young children around ponds. The ponds are up to two feet deep and the pond liners are extremely slippery.) Relax while watching the fish play or the birds at the feeders, you may even see a bullfrog. Or walk up the hill to the swing in the back yard and enjoy views of the neighboring fields & woods. Enjoy a meal or nap on the comfy sofa or in the hammock on the spacious patio and listen to the music of the waterfall. Flavor up your meal with a few leaves from the herb garden by the patio. (All bed, bath and kitchen linens provided.)

This is a no smoking property.

Pet policy. Sorry, no cats, strong allergy! Dogs considered, contact owner, pet fee for dogs is $10/night/pet.

New furnace, Fall 2013, fuels the central heat. New central air conditioning Summer 2014!

New solid maple kitchen countertops, March 2014

New solid oak dining room table, October 2014

The two bedrooms and the bath are upstairs. Linens provided. The front bedroom has a Queen bed, raised ceiling, ceiling fan and TV. The second bedroom has a double bed, TV and unique butler's stairs to kitchen. There is a shared full bath with tub/shower off the common hallway.

A twin daybed is available downstairs in the reading/game room. A twin size air mattress is also available (built-in electric plug in for inflating.)

Bring your favorite DVDs or watch a movie from my collection on the 40' Flat Screen TV in the living room. Basic DirecTV as well.

NEW!!! SONOS Play I added Sept. 2015 so you can play YOUR favorite music via your phone!

Washer and dryer are available for your use in the basement/cellar.

You are welcome to use one of my handmade quilts if the nights are cool. My original oil and watercolor paintings decorate the house.

The house and location is perfect for Cyclists, JMU/Bridgewater/EMU/MBC parents, Hikers, or Sightseers. The area is a favorite for road cyclists with an amazing number of paved backroads. A county road map is available at the house.

About Elizabeth Tuttle

I am an artist with many interests. I like to travel and paint. But I also enjoy home projects and gardening. I am retired and can choose what I want to do each day.

I have grandchildren in Virginia and California, so I like to spend time on each coast. Hiking and kayaking are favorite activities. When you stay in my Quietude Cottage, you will see evidence of my varied endeavors and interests.

Elizabeth Tuttle purchased this house in 2006

Why Elizabeth Tuttle chose Virginia

North Carolina natives, our family visited the Shenandoah Valley often when my children were young. My daughter lives about a mile from this house, so it is a natural, easy place for me to stay when I'm in Virginia. I love the beauty of the Valley and there are so many ways to enjoy your time here. Lots of wineries have developed over the past few years and they are fun to visit. Easy access to the Blue Ridge mountains, National Forests, Harrisonburg, Staunton and Charlottesville is a bonus.

What makes this house unique

Tranquility. I find it beside water. I like having the water features near the living room window so in warm weather, with the windows open, I hear the water falling into the pond and in winter I enjoy viewing the water or ice. Visiting birds like the water too! Bird feeders help assure lots of birds in spring & summer and some year round.

The area is quiet and that contributes to the peaceful atmosphere. Again, the house and outside areas offer privacy without isolation. I think the house and yard are beautiful and have enjoyed projects that sustain and improve on that beauty. Have lots more projects on my list!

Downtown Staunton is a favorite place to visit. I particularly like the art galleries and restaurants.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Quietude cottage hosts the VERY BEST guests. Everyone has been so pleasant and left the house is excellent shape. I love finding new ideas that I think guests will like. I appreciate all the great reviews and learned a lot from the one negative one. Lots of other guests have left positive comments in my guest book. Putting the cottage on VRBO/HomeAway was a good move for me!

Beautiful grounds, country cottage with a lot of charm

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing time at Quietude cottage! We stayed for a few nights during the Memorial Day holiday to do some hiking and explore some of the Shenandoah Valley. The cottage had everything we needed - space for our dog to romp, comfortable outdoor spaces, and a well-appointed kitchen that we used to make a nice little cookout. Some of the many bonuses included a great selection of DVDs (especially if you love romantic comedies like I do!), maps/brochures of the area and a popcorn machine. Our dog was mesmerized by the frogs, fish, and birds that are on the property! Elizabeth was a great host as well. She was attentive but also let us do our thing while we were out there. My boyfriend and I (along with our dog) will definitely be returning!!

Super Thanksgiving Get-Away!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed four nights over the Thanksgiving weekend in this comfortable cottage and had a wonderful time. We enjoyed the wonderful outdoor area at the rear of the house, especially the fire pit and the grill. We found the house clean and well equipped. The owner went out of her way to make things nice for us and anticipated our wants and needs. There are almost unlimited things to do and see in the area. We enjoyed biking in Staunton and Dayton as well as hiking at Shennadoah National Park.

Beautiful outdoor space & well-equipped kitchen

  • 3 of 5

We read the reviews and booked this vacation house with high expectations. We were disappointed upon arrival because the exterior of the house is not very appealing and there were some spider webs. The garage was not clean either. Backyard is very nice with 3 ponds and it's relaxing to sit there and watch birds and butterflies. Our daughter likes the piano and private stairs in her bedroom. Walls are decorated with nice paintings and the playroom is a good space to spend family time in. Only 1 bathroom upstairs makes it not so convenient when you stay there with more than 2 people. On average, I spend about 3 months away from home yearly for the past 10 years and this one is overpriced, compared to the others I have stayed in so far.

Owner's Response: Funny how many guests have said the house exceeded their expectations. In selecting a place to stay, I recommend looking closely at the photos and info about properties, while also reading the reviews, to find the best fit for you. I never like for my guests to be disappointed in any way. That is why I show everything I can about the house and provide extensive information both on the listing page and in correspondence with potential guests. The exterior of this old (1924) house is exactly as shown in the lead photo, regarding spider webs outside the house..a little out of my control, though I remove any I see. The garage is not attached and is not for guests use except as storage for outdoor toys. It is basically an old shed across the drive from the house. I make certain that every inquiry response includes the following "To be sure you know, the only bathroom and both bedrooms are upstairs on the second story," I believe my pricing is fair for a "whole house and yard" and is one of the lowest rates in this area. I'm glad these guests enjoyed much of the house and its amenities. Hope YOU will stay at Quietude Cottage, I work to make sure it's clean, comfortable and well equipped for you!

Weekend Retreat

  • 4 of 5

We stayed in Virginia for 2 nights after an exhausting vacation to PA and Washington DC. The house and surroundings are beautiful and relaxing. We loved the water features, especially the one at the back of the patio. Listening to and watching the hummingbirds was lovely. There are plenty of opportunities to relax outdoors with hammocks, chairs, an outdoor sofa, an outdoor wood-burning stove, an artist's studio, and games. The house is extremely kid friendly, which I think is a great feature, even though our children are all teenagers. There does tend to be quite a bit of traffic on the road, which can be noisy at night and early mornings. That would be the only somewhat negative thing about this property, and it certainly is not a reason to not choose this place! Elizabeth was also very friendly and accommodating, always replied quickly by email, and it is obvious she wants you to enjoy your stay. The wood features in the house are beautiful. The price is right! I absolutely recommend this for your stay.

Owner's Response: Happy that my first Wisconsin guests enjoyed the house and outdoors so much! The patio will soon be improved with the addition of a nice gas grill! Traffic on the narrow road by the house doesn't seem heavy or noisy to me, but guess that's relative! It's all what you're used to I suppose. Glad the other features seemed to outweigh this to these guests too!

Great, Great Experience!!

  • 5 of 5

The photographs of the property are nice, but doesn't compare to the real thing! Beautiful property. We so enjoyed sitting out back and watching the hummingbirds. This was an ideal location for the music festival we attended, as well as antique shopping in multiple cities. Extremely quiet, and we slept like babies. The kitchen is stocked with any appliance or utensil you could possibly need. We've already decided to return next year. We've rented with VRBO and Homeaway in multiple cities, but this has been the best ever! Highly recommend!

Owner's Response: Thank you! I definitely have the best guests staying at Quietude Cottage. I enjoy trying to keep the house well equipped. Always like thinking of something new I think my guests will like, such as the recently added trio of sun sails over the patio.

Amazing location

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed out stay here for a girls' getaway. The location is perfectly centered in the Shenandoah Valley region, so we were able to make day trips all over the area. The front porch swing was my favorite spot. Sleeping wise - one bed was pillowtop like and very comfy - the other was very firm. The owner was very quick to respond to any questions and the price was great.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the kind words. I always listen to my guests and try to add improvements in response to their comments. The second bedroom now has a comfort top on the bed!

Notes:
Relax by the water gardens and enjoy the goldfish, birds and sound of waterfalls. Inviting front porch with swing, rocking chairs and table for two. Nap or read on the great patio sofa! Three swings... on the front porch, by a water garden and at upper back yard. Washer and dryer in basement/cellar. Bedrooms and bathroom are upstairs. Central heat (new furnace Oct. 2013) and central air conditioning (new spring 2014). I love to bake and cook in the kitchen, especially with all new appliances and most recently, new solid maple countertops, crafted and installed by my son-in-law.
