You will love returning to the cottage after your day of exploring the Shenandoah Valley. Located in Mount Sidney, VA, Quietude is a 1920s seven room cottage style house, with original wood floors throughout. Partially open walls in the living areas create an inviting space. A new for 2017 windowed Garden Room with seating area, swing, breakfast nook, laundry closet and full bath is perfectly situated for watching birds play in the garden ponds and stream. The cottage is located on 1 1/2 acres and there are soothing water features. Take time to swing on the front porch (has babygate) or beside one of the goldfish ponds. (Keep watchful eye over young children around ponds. The ponds are up to two feet deep and the pond liners are extremely slippery.) Relax while watching the fish play or the birds at the feeders, you may even see a bullfrog. Or walk up the hill to the swing in the back yard and enjoy views of the neighboring fields & woods. Enjoy a meal or nap on the comfy sofa on the spacious patio and listen to the music of the waterfall or relax in the nearby hammocks. Flavor up your meal with a few leaves from the herb garden by the patio. (All bed, bath and kitchen linens provided.)

Relax by the water gardens and enjoy the goldfish, birds and sound of waterfalls. Birds love to bathe in the little stream visible from garden room windows. Inviting front porch with swing, rocking chairs and table for two. Love the new garden room, complete with breakfast nook, conversation seating & swing!!, full bath and laundry closet. Think you'll love it too! Nap or read on the great patio sofa! Swings... on the front porch, in the garden room. Washer and dryer in garden room. Addition privacy available with XLtwins in studio bedroom separate but joined to house. Other two bedrooms and one full bathroom are upstairs. Second full bath with curbless shower downstairs in garden room. Central heat and central air conditioning. I love to bake and cook in the kitchen, especially with updated appliances and most recently, new solid maple countertops, crafted and installed by my son-in-law. And love using my baker's table for bread making, etc.

Country Charm

  • 5 of 5

We spent last weekend at Quietude while we attended a JMU graduation. We were so happy we found this home. It is located not far off of the main roads. There are amazing views and farms along the way. Once we arrived and went inside we were found a wonderful home. It was spotless. Beds made professional and with care. The kitchen was amazing with all possible appliances at the ready. The final touch was a couple of beer mugs chillin in the freezer.

We felt so at home here with all of the personal touches on each room.

To top it off there are small koi ponds with many varieties of plants and birds everywhere.

We sat in the newly redone sitting room next to the ponds in the morning watching the wildlife and natural beauty.

I highly recommend this home and will stay there again next time we are in the area.

Owner's Response: It is great to receive such positive reviews in response to my efforts to imagine being a guest here and constantly seeking to improve all aspects of the house and gardens. I love spending time here and want my guests to love it too. I do have the very best guests! The sunroom is a new addition that grew from the need for a first floor bathroom and laundry room. It is now my favorite room with its windowed walls and pond/garden views. I welcome repeat guests, makes me smile!

I’ll always remember the month I spent at this home very fondly. It had everything from charm to convenience. Many things to do within a day trip and the nearby town of Staunton had a very historical feel. Loved shopping there. This place was perfect for a relaxing time enjoying nature taking in views. The owner was very accommodating to our needs. Loved the whole experience.

A wonderful get away! We can't wait to return!

  • 5 of 5

Quietude cottage was all we hoped for and more! Elizabeth was wonderful and prompt in her communications. Quietude is well equipped with all the comforts of home. We cannot say enough about the gardens and the amazing garden room. So Zen! We saw something new everyday and loved watching the birds, frogs, and especially the hummingbirds! Elizabeth's art work is wonderful and we enjoyed her whimsical decorations both indoors and out. The fire pit by the water garden quickly became the meeting place in the evening. We were centrally located to family and everyone wanted to meet at Quietude to enjoy it! Everyone in my family has requested that we always rent Quietude when we stay. We all loved it that much! The furnishings are built for comfort and I was able to have my dog and my four year old niece playing without worrying that they would break something. We enjoyed going for walks down the country road and the views from Wine Hollow just down the street were amazing! We cannot wait to return.

Most Relaxing + Homey Space

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I gathered for wedding-related celebrations in this beautiful house. We found the home incredibly well-appointed for cooking, sharing meals, grilling, and hanging out on the patio. We loved how quiet and restful it was, just as advertised. Had we been able to spend more time in the space, we would have taken advantage of the many spots where hours of solitude immersed in reading and painting could have unfolded.

There is an awesome collection of DVDs and the common area along with both bedrooms had DVD players. This was especially enjoyed by the few kids who came out to the property; as was the pond out back, where frogs + fish were easy to discover. I appreciated the two portable speakers, which we used while cooking; both were Bluetooth enabled. Elizabeth was a great host, communicated quickly, and professionally. We would definitely recommend this home and definitely hope to return!

About Elizabeth Tuttle

I am an artist with many interests. I like to travel and paint. But I also enjoy home projects and gardening. I am retired and can choose what I want to do each day.

I have grandchildren in Virginia and California, so I like to spend time on each coast. Hiking and kayaking are favorite activities. When you stay in my Quietude Cottage, you will see evidence of my varied endeavors and interests.

Elizabeth Tuttle purchased this house in 2006

Why Elizabeth Tuttle chose Mount Sidney

North Carolina natives, our family visited the Shenandoah Valley often when my children were young. My daughter lives about a mile from this house, so it is a natural, easy place for me to stay when I'm in Virginia. I love the beauty of the Valley and there are so many ways to enjoy your time here. Lots of wineries have developed over the past few years and they are fun to visit. Easy access to the Blue Ridge mountains, National Forests, Harrisonburg, Staunton and Charlottesville is a bonus.

What makes this house unique

Tranquility. I find it beside water. I like having the water features near the living room window so in warm weather, with the windows open, I hear the water falling into the pond and in winter I enjoy viewing the water or ice. Visiting birds like the water too! Bird feeders help assure lots of birds in spring & summer and some year round.

The area is quiet and that contributes to the peaceful atmosphere. Again, the house and outside areas offer privacy without isolation. I think the house and yard are beautiful and have enjoyed projects that sustain and improve on that beauty. Have lots more projects on my list!

Downtown Staunton is a favorite place to visit. I particularly like the art galleries and restaurants.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Quietude cottage hosts the VERY BEST guests. Everyone has been so pleasant and left the house is excellent shape. I love finding new ideas that I think guests will like. I appreciate all the great reviews and learned a lot from the one negative one. Lots of other guests have left positive comments in my guest book. Putting the cottage on VRBO/HomeAway was a good move for me!
