The Whalehead Life Saving Station was moved to this location in the famous wild horse sanctuary in the 1980's The current owner's father had the station moved to this lot saving it from demolition by neglect! "Miss Penny" as we call her is caretaker to this fabulous old building located in the middle of a protected wildlife management area. There are no nearby houses. Only sand dunes with wild oats growing on them. The wild horses can be seen grazing nearby on the oat grass and sometimes even come right up to the house. You won't find a more private location while staying in the popular Carova Beach 4 wheel drive area. Bring your fishing rod, binoculars , and sun screen and come visit one of the most beautiful beaches in the United States!

Imagine the Outer Banks 100 years

It was a time when every ship that sailed past these shores risked destruction from the perilous shoals or sudden storms. It was a time when United States Lifesaving Crewmen kept watch from station houses such as this, risking their lives to save those hapless mariners.

You'll feel the spirit of these brave, rugged crewmen throughout this authentic structure. The WhaleHead Lifesaving Station is available for rent only to those wishing to experience an Outer Banks vacation the 'original way'. Nestled inside 800 acres of wildlife refuge and sandy dunes, your nearest neighbors will probably have four feet and a tail, or wings and a beak. Just a short distance from the ocean, but driving is an option. (approximately 1000 ft)

The Station, although a historic building preserved in a rustic state, has most of the comforts of home. The shared eat in kitchen is a guaranteed gathering place equipped with refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher, and most small kitchen appliances. The 2 adjoined bedrooms and bath will accommodate a 4 person group nicely. The first floor bedroom will be occupied by the caretaker/owners. The loft living room is another visiting area where Lifesaving Crewmen spent free time between storms and their daily duties. All Rooms have ceiling fans and natural cross ventilation (no A/C except window units in the bedrooms). Expansive wrap-around decks provide a sunny spot and wonderful views from all directions, all day long.

So plan for an outback style adventure and be sure to pack your imagination, that way you'll be assured of hearing the echoes of its seafaring history in the halls. One of its most endearing features is never ending privacy.

2 adjoined bedrooms available for your private refuge on the private second level. Both sets of bedrooms have a window air conditioner for sleeping comfort. One side of the hall is a queen room with two adjoining twins. Private bath located down the hall. OR stay on the other side of the hall in a double bed with bath and two adjoining twins. 4 person MAX. Hot water outside shower available. Kitchen privileges. No central air. (window units in the bedrooms).

4x4 required. AWD not recommended. No pets allowed.

Miss Penny lives on the first floor.

Reviewer Comments:

I purposely sought out a place where I could relax and totally disconnect - the Whalehead Lifesaving Station proved to be exactly what I was looking for. This is the place where time stands still. The building is primitive and simple (only the bedrooms are air conditioned.) But little things make the difference - the delicious well water, the constant cool breeze over the dunes, the spectacular sunsets and sunrises seen from the tower, the boat room with its nautical memorabilia, the beach close by but far enough away to allow solitude, the wild horses that graze in the distance as you drink your morning coffee and the clearest night sky you will ever see. This is a place that is unlike any other. This is a place for adventurers, writers, readers, nature lovers and those that go with the flow.

I speak for our entire family (mom, dad, 19 yr old son and 14 yr old daughter) when I describe our stay at Whalehead as absolutely perfect! The home is an historic treasure -- I mean how cool is it that when we visited the nearby Currituck Lighthouse we saw a picture of the very house we were staying in right there on display?!? The house was immaculately clean, Ms. Penny was delightful and the surroundings were amazing. While there we saw horses, deer, dolphins, and gorgeous sunrises and sunsets. We had been a little hesitant about staying in a shared home, but Penny is a pro -- she strikes the perfect balance of being available for questions and guidance without infringing on her guest's privacy or personal space/time. Also, this was our first time driving on the beach, but our Jeep Wrangler had no problems at all (and no beach driving permit is required). Once there, you can easily walk from the house down to the beach and there are plenty of beach visitors nearby so you don't have to be nervous about no one else being around if you needed help. If you are looking to stay in the lap of luxury, this isn't for you. However, if you want to "get away" and experience a calm and relaxation that is reminisent of a simpler era I can't recommend Whalehead highly enough!

Whaleshead Lifesaving Station was everything we hoped for and more. We spent our 30th anniversary here and it was so special. It was quiet and cozy. We spent our time on the deck out front where there was always a breeze or on the beach where the water was always cool and fresh. We enjoyed seeing the horses grazing on the dunes, the dolphins swimming out in front of the house, and simply relaxing. We also thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Ms. Penny....she is a treasure. This property holds so many stories and so much history, and Ms. Penney holds these stories in her heart and mind. Thank you so much. We will treasure our week for the rest of our lives, and we look forward to returning soon!

Amazing Beach Scenery

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful location and it is so rare to find an oceanfront house with so much undeveloped property around it making it very peaceful. You have only horses for neighbors and all the beach space you could ever want!

It is great for those who like adventurous vacations like camping or staying at cabins to get away from it all. Getting there is part of the fun, our Honda Ridgeline pickup had no problems driving on the beach and it was a beautiful drive.

It was nice to have the owner there to tell us about the history of the home and other information about the area. She went out of her way to make sure we enjoyed ourselves.

Unique Whalehead Lifesaving Station = Relaxation

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I decided to spend our family/anniversary vacation with our teenage boys at this wonderful shared home and we truly fell in love with it. I must admit, we had never shared a home with the owner, but Ms. Penny's welcoming, friendly, and caring presence will definitely bring us back again.

Ms. Penny's home is definitely a 'step back in time' filled with history we really enjoyed hearing about her experience growing up here and the passion/dedication that her father had in moving and renovating the property.

The location of this 'piece of heaven' really allowed us to disconnect from our crazy routines and constant distractions, and gave us the time to enjoy each other's company while playing cards or just sharing a meal. We loved having the beach access so close and was surpised that in the middle of summer, it was NOT crowded. Driving in the 4x4 beach was memorable and definitely one my older son will remember.

The plain notion of enjoying nature such as observing the wild horses or collecting lightening rocks/shells was just some elements of relaxation. We loved waking up and going to bed to the sounds of the ocean. I am truly grateful for stumbling into this property and my words are not enough to express/decribe the ease I felt being there and have the company of Ms. Penny. We loved it!!!

Map

The WhaleHead Life Saving Station is situated on private land in the middle of a wildlife sanctuary. Moved from WhaleHead Beach, back in the 1980's, the home has remained virtually untouched by time. It is available only to those with a 4 wheel drive vehicle, as you must drive next to the ocean to reach this house. Carova Beach is also home to the famous wild horses.
