Top of the World - a lovely home on Top of a Mountain with spectacular views of the White Mountains.
We call it the 'Ski House', really it is the perfect vacation home for one or two families, a few couples or group of friends. The house is designed to share great meals and conversation and enjoy memorable sunsets. Stay home and read and relax, or find your adventure of the day. Depending on your interests the options in the area are endless.
You can take a short hike right from the house that provides a 360 degree view of the mountains. There are gentle and more rigorous hikes just a few miles from the house. Ski Attitash, Wildcat, Cranmore or Black Mt. for beginners and no crowds. Nordic skiing and golf are just down the road in the village of Jackson.
In the summer there is canoeing or kayaking the Saco River, rock climbing with trained guides, hanging out on the Ellis River, Zip lines at Wildcat or Bretton Woods, hike up Mt. Washington - if you are tired take the Cog Railroad down. If you can't resist the opportunity to shop, check out the world class stores in tax free NH in North Conway. For younger kids Storyland is just down the road. If you like to dine out there are outstanding dinner restaurants in Jackson and beyond, great lunch and breakfast as well.
We welcome you to create the same kind of magical memories our family and friends have experienced for years at the 'ski house' in Jackson. There is a history of laughter, adventure and story telling. We are happy to share our space with you, our favorite hikes, restaurants, and things to experience in our book of our personal favorites for all ages on the coffee table when you arrive. My Dad, who was Swiss, built this house in search of the closest thing he could find to Switzerland without being there. It was one of the best decisions he ever made!

We live in Durham NH - Ruth Abelmann works at the Univeristy of New Hampshire as the Associate Director of Residential Life and also teaches yoga. Michael Penney is a freelance commercial photographer. Our family and friends all love the 'ski house'.
The Owner purchased this house in 1967
Ruth's father built this home as a family vacation spot to ski and hike. He was Swiss and was looking for something that resembled Switzerland.
The opportunties to enjoy the outdoors are endless - hikig and akiing and much more. We have many amazing memories in the house sharing meals, playing games and telling stories - it is a magical place! If you want to stay home and enjoy the views while reading a book -this is also a great way to spend time in the house.
We stayed at "Top of the World" over my birthday weekend in August. The house was situated at the top of the hill with a beautiful view of the mountains. The sunsets at night were something special! We made it a point to be home for the them every night! The house itself had a nice layout with everything you would need on a vacation. The location is great, just a short drive up from the Jackson village and a quick 20 min drive to North Conway. Ruth, the owner, was great to communicate with and was quick to help respond to my various inquiries. My family plans on staying again, and so should you if you are reading this!
What a great location! We were thrilled to be 5 minutes to Black Mountain and close to Cranmore. We did some snowshoeing on the trails down the road from the house and XC skied at Great Glenn which is surrounded by the views of Mount Washington. The views and sunsets over the Presidential Mountains from the house were spectacular. The house was perfect for us. It was comfortable and full of family memories. We have been staying at Top of the World for 3 years now and we have such wonderful memories cooking up a meal after a long day of skiing and sitting by the fire while the sunsets. We look forward to it every year.
Let me start by saying we had the clearest sky's anyone could ever hope for in New Hampshire. From the windows in the living room we watch a FULL moon set each morning over the Presidential Range. We could see the observation towers on Mt. Washington EVERY day. Staying at Top of the World was like going back in time and learning about the rich history of skiing in NH. Thank You for opening up your 'family' home with it's history from every piece of furniture, decoration and wall hanging. Great Place to make a Memory.
We've had a home on the same street for 35 years and have always had a large family gathering over Columbus Day weekend. Usually we rent a few hotel rooms or another home somewhere in Jackson. When we saw this listing right down the street we jumped at the chance to rent it. We are so glad we did! Clean, comfortable and well appointed, it didn't disappoint in any way. We all felt very at home. Ruth was tremendously accommodating to all of our questions and needs and we hope to stay again next year.
We've rented this home twice, once in the summer, once in the winter. It has terrific energy, and it is cozy and spacious. We had a wonderful time with some family friends -- plenty of room for two families -- cooking big dinners and relaxing by the fireplace in the open concept living room. The Jackson house was a wonderful launching pad for hiking in the White Mountains with our kids, and for cross country and downhill skiing. Some of the best mountains in the east are incredibly close, and having coffee with a view of Mount Washington -- just about perfect!
This is a beautiful place, in a great location to do many different activities. The view of the mountains is beautiful, and it is very peaceful and quiet at the house. But,,there is plenty to do in the area. When you visit this place you will enjoy pure nature. Just being here for a few nights makes you feel like you have been gone for a week or more. A great place for a family or just a few adults to enjoy quality time together. The owners are very nice, flexible, and easy to work with.
