This has been our family vacation home since 1976. We acquired it when we lived in New York City. In l983, we moved to Nashville, TN, for professionial reasons, but because we treasure this place, our three-generation family use it frequently in summer, fall, winter and spring.
Willilam Whetsell purchased this house in 1976
We bought this property because when we were looking for a vacation home on the South Shore of Long Island, it seemed to have just the kind of warmth and mellowness we were seeking. It has certainly proved to be the case since our now three-generation family continue to use it (and love it) all year. We have not rented it before, but because there are several weeks this coming summer when we will not be using it, we would like to rent during those periods. It is a 'joy-full' property for us, a family-oriented place welcoming to all ages.
This property is a charming Long Island house built in 1929 set on a partially-wooded acre in the village with gardens and lawn behind the house. Since we acquired it in l976, we have made certain updates and additions, but it still retains the feeling of a home with lots of warmth and family history. It spacious, private and accommodating for children and adults of all ages. It is located a quick walk (two blocks) from Main Street and the center of the Village of Westhampton Beach as well as a nice walk or bike ride to the Village Beach. Because of its con-
venient location on the South Shore of Long Island, it offers a great variety of activities. Those activities are described above.
Westhampton Beach is a small village on the South Shore of Long Island. It is the closest Hampton to New York City (65 miles). It is in an historic area with a series of lovely and interes-ting old Long Island villages and towns including Remsenburg, Quogue, Hampton Bays, Southampton, Easthampton and Montauk. There are numerous activities available (see listings above). In particular, exploring the beaches, historic villages, a wide variety of shops including great antique shops and beautiful nurseries gives visitors a lot to do. In addition, the fishing is great. Specific recommendations for exploring include
the old whaling village of Sagg Harbor, Shelter Island, the towns of Southampton (established around 1745), Easthampton and at the eastern-most tip of Long Isand, the town of Montauk. The entire South Shore of Long Island is a beautiful, unique and diverse area. And if visitors wish to go farther, the North Shore is also beautiful and fascinating with a number of vineyards and wineries as well as historic places.
