About Mary and Don Russell

My husband and I followed our hearts and purchased the original cabin in 1986 as a young couple with two small boys. Our family grew with the addition of two more boys, and together we enjoyed campfires, our pontoon boat, and wiffle ball games on the large lawn. Many changes have occurred in recent years; the cabin was replaced with a spacious home in 2007, our boys have gone off to college and moved away, and my husband and I sold our family home in Vermont and moved to New Hampshire. Finding that we are not able to return to the lake often we decided to share our beautiful and relaxing getaway with others.

Mary and Don Russell purchased this house in 1986

Why Mary and Don Russell chose Lake Champlain Islands

Although neither of us had ever been to the Island of Isle La Motte, we immediately fell in love with Blanchard Bay. Over the years our family has created lasting memories; taking advantage of uninterrupted time together without the pressures of everyday life. To this day I immediately relax as I pull in the driveway just knowing the hammock is waiting for me.

What makes this house unique

Located on a private dead-end road as well as a protected bay, our home has easy access to the lake via a boat ramp. With 225 feet of lakeshore and over an acre of land, there's plenty of room for lawn games and the kids to run around. Oh, and we LOVE the screen house and fire pit added in 2012!

Alittle piece of heaven

  • 5 of 5

The listing only touched on the peacefulness and beauty of the home and serenity of the view. Gorgeous sunrise and sunsets,

We had an amazing week celebrating my mom's 80th birthday. The home is very equipped with everything you could possible need.

All you need is your clothes, food and beverages. The rest is there. The peddle boat was a bonus and offered endless fun for all.

We took in a Saturday evening mass at the St Anne Shrine (outdoors), You can walk there from the house. We had a wonderful lunch at the Alburgh Golf Course. But most importantly we relaxed on the outside patios and read, played games and enjoyed family. Absolutely would rent it again.

Ideal Lake Champlain Property!

  • 5 of 5

This is the fourth property we have rented on the Islands and we LOVED it! First, Isle la Motte is a peaceful location with more bicycle traffic than cars! This property is on a small side road and was great for our 11 and 8 year old to ride on without worry of cars. The yard was great in the front for soccer, football, etc. The house itself was perfect - CLEAN! Wonderful open floor plan. Kitchen with plenty of dishes, utensils, etc. The back patio was beautiful, great grill, table with umbrella, screened in house with hammock. Dock was great for swimming (could have used a ladder to climb out), fishing was fantastic- the boys loved it! Fire pit was nice - only issue was that we had a heavy rainfall and the wood was wet (maybe a small tarp to cover the pile?). We bought a pile of firewood the next night and had a nice fire to roast marshmallows! Definitely would recommend this property and hope to be back there in the future!

Paradise

  • 5 of 5

My family and I had a wonderful time at this exceptional property. In fact, we continue to refer to it as "paradise," and hope to return in 2016! The home is exceptionally clean and updated--with every amenity you could ask for. Awakening to loons, herons and lapping waves, with a sunrise--and sunset--was simply remarkable. There is a peace to be found there--but also room for lots of activities. My grandchildren (10, 8 and 3) found the pedal boat provided--and the two kayaks we brought--so easy to launch and such fun to use. We all swam off the dock, fished (boy are there big ones!), and enjoyed the fire pit almost nightly (a perfect place for S'mores!) The large front yard was perfect for our kickball games and croquet. It's also a great island to run and bike on and we also loved how close the golf course was--only 2 miles to the first tee!

The owners--Don and Mary--were very helpful and responsive to any questions. I would highly recommend this lake house to anyone looking for a family vacation.

Beautiful property in quiet part of Lake Champlain

  • 5 of 5

If this house and property were for sale we'd want to buy it!

We had 3 generations, ages ranged from 55 years old to 5 months old. Very comfortable space for all! The Russells provide many toys for all. The adults especially loved the blowup large float. The dock and ramp was also a huge plus for our fishing boat. Great biking and running area. Easy to hang out for the week. Beautiful sunrise and sunset colors and views looking north into Canada.

The house was clean upon arrival with plenty of fresh towels and linens. Internet service was dependable although the cell phone service (AT&T) was spotty. We brought plenty of food with us so we only needed to get a few things from the local Harborside side market. We would definitely recommend this property.

Clean, Spacious, Great Lawns, Spectacular View

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a wonderful stay at this spacious, clean, and fully-stocked house. The kids (5 & 3 yrs.) loved the large lawns, the shed full of toys, the paddleboat, inflatables, and all the room in the house. Croquet, baseball, frisbees, life jackets, badminton, golf clubs and balls, all kinds of fun stuff to play with and great lawns to do it on. The screened in porch is a great resting spot (hammock) and we used the outside fire pit often. The house is relatively new and so it is very clean and orderly, with nearly any household need accounted for. We have rented a couple lake houses in this area and this is the cleanest, neatest one we've seen. If you are tired of "camp" style houses then this may be for you.

The waterside view is spectacular with a quiet little bay looking north toward Canada. The water was nice; slightly weedy, rocky bottom, very shallow. The only drawback is the shallowness of the water (the lake was down when we were there -not sure how the level has change since) which made swimming a little awkward and made it difficult to use a boat. We tried to rent a pontoon boat and were told that we weren't allowed to by the boat rental place (North Hero Marina - not recommended) that we couldn't because it was too shallow in our bay. This was a bit of a bummer but we were able to rent a boat at a different location, just not able to bring it up to the house. The owners told me this was unusual and that they usually have plenty of guests keep boats at the dock so I would just be wary of this situation and maybe arrange something in advance. The cement boat ramp would make it easy to launch your own boat, however. We also rented stand-up paddle boards at Hero's Welcome which is a great place to rent things as well as a fantastic lunch spot and tourist shop.

The owners Don and Mary were extremely accommodating and friendly - and accessible - and overall I would highly recommend this house to any family.

Wonderful vacation....

  • 5 of 5

The pictures on the site do not do this house justice: the location is breathtaking, the house inviting and meticulous and the lawn is fantastic for yard games (which were provided). The owners were very responsive to every question we asked. We enjoyed the paddle boat (which was provided), we biked and ran around the island and did some daytrips (Montreal and Burlington, both of which were only about an hour away). Highly recommend!! Thank you Mary & Don!
